Mechanicus II: First Gameplay Trailer… and a Big Reveal

The Machine God demands your attention – the first gameplay trailer for Warhammer 40,000: Mechanicus II has finally arrived! Check it out here.

Coming later this year to Windows PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S, the sequel throws you straight into a planetary war between the Adeptus Mechanicus and the ancient Necron race.

You’ll notice some familiar faces: Magos Dominus Faustinius’ trusted advisors return, this time as deployable and upgradeable leaders of his skirmish forces. Each brings their own unique personality and battlefield specialisation, adding a new strategic layer to your command.

For the first time in a Warhammer 40,000 video game, the kin of the Leagues of Votann enter the battlefield as a non-playable faction appearing in both campaigns. Their purpose on the contested world of Hekateus IV remains unknown: are they fellow seekers of knowledge, mercenaries in search of profit, or something far more dangerous? Their presence raises questions, and their loyalty is anything but guaranteed.

The Leagues Of Votann are coming to Warhammer 40,000: Mechanicus 2

Each army in Warhammer 40,000 has its own codex containing rules, lore, and nice pictures, and The Leagues Of Votann's - the game's contemporary space dwarves - was out of date before a single model was available to buy. Advance copies went out, people noticed that the rules were horribly broken, more people noticed that the rules were actually massively, horribly, absurdly broken, and the company issued an apology, pulling out their cutesy 'James Workshop' moniker in an attempt to aw shucks the fact they'd just sold everyone some very expensive hardback kindling. They later issued some rules errata, and they're supposedly in a more sensible spot now, even if doing anything interesting with them visually is confined, as per, to Necromunda.

If I had to bet money on it, I'd guess they won't be nearly as broken in Warhammer 40,000: Mechanicus 2 when they appear as potential allies or foes for both the Ad-mech and Necron playable factions. That's because difficulty balance was one of the major problems holding the original Mechanicus back from strategy greatness (the game was later patched), so I imagine it being at the forefront of Bulwark Studio's mind this time. Decide for yourself by observing the trailer below. How many busted tokens do these dwarves have in their beards?

Warhammer 40k Mechanicus 2 gives the beloved strategy game a new angle

With the launch of Space Marine 2, the world of Warhammer 40,000 is back on everyone's mind, but the game I'm really waiting for is Warhammer 40k: Mechanicus 2. The XCOM-like strategy game's 2018 predecessor is one of the greatest and most overlooked games in the franchise. In Mechanicus 2, developer Bulwark Studios and publisher Kasesdo Games are building on the original's success by making the enemy force of Necrons into a playable faction. At Gamescom 2024, I sat down with Kasedo product manager Tony Cross to take a closer look at the new game and learn how it brings the Necron perspective to the fore.
