Devlog #6: Unique Dev Challenges – February 19th, 2025

Hi, Gamers!

Tina here—Social Media Expert and Host at RolldBox Games. Today, I’m chatting with Ferran, one of our Co-Founders, as well as the Game Designer and Creative Director of the studio at RolldBox Games 👋

We're making steady progress on the final product, and today, we're excited to share some behind-the-scenes programming insights. There’s a lot that goes into development, so we’ve picked two key aspects to give you a glimpse of what’s happening under the hood. Writing scalable code, harnessing Unreal’s full power, and ensuring top-notch performance are always at the core of our process.

Let’s dive in!
Inside the Development Process
In the relic system, one of the biggest challenges has been designing subsystems in advance to keep relic families (those with shared behaviors) scalable. This way, we can implement new relics and synergies without having to rework older ones every time we add something fresh. Plus, we've made sure all these modifiers seamlessly integrate with the game's core systems—physics, object manipulation, abilities, enemies, and more.

There’s a solid lineup of relics in the full game (you’ll see for yourself!), all crafted just for you. 🔮
Sneak Peek of Upcoming Content
This game revolves around telekinesis and the ability to move objects, making physics management a top priority. You can move everything around you... except for the ground!

Unreal Engine’s physics have a solid core, but they’re packed with tiny details that shape how the gameplay feels—especially in the middle of all the chaos. Fine-tuning how Unreal handles all the math and nailing that satisfying "throwing stuff" experience has been a challenge from day one.

Enjoy the demo in Story Mode too!

Today, we’re sharing which relic we, as a team, found the easiest to use in the demo: the Base Shots with effects. They’re super simple—just apply fire, poison, or bleed, for example.

Make the most of them in Infinite Waves and climb the Leaderboard while you're at it!

Devlog #5: Performance Matters – February 5th, 2025

Hi, Gamers!

Tina here—Social Media Expert and Host at RolldBox Games. Today, I’m chatting with Cris, Art Director of the studio at RolldBox Games 👋

We're deep into the development, and we can't wait for you to experience the Full version soon!

We love sharing insights into the different aspects of game development—just like we’ve been doing with these Devlogs…

As many have said before, making a video game is no easy feat—especially when striving for cohesion and consistency across all elements to craft the best possible experience for you. That’s the spirit driving us every step of the way.
Inside the Development Process
Today, we want to dive into the challenges of optimizing game performance. Besides the tricks we've shown you, there's a lot more to uncover.

Balancing artistic vision with technical constraints is key to finding the sweet spot between visual quality and performance. To achieve this, we’ve used a variety of techniques throughout development—from reusing assets with variations to strategically crafting scene composition and camera angles, among others.

We can't overlook the number of throwables in this game, where the ability to move objects—telekinesis—plays a major role!

Here's an example for you, and you'll get a sneak peek at the kinds of actions you can pull off! 🙂

The game's overlap system and all the physics involved have been an ongoing challenge: the sheer number of interactions happening at once, keeping characters from flying off after an impact, for instance. And when you throw in the relics and all their possibilities, you can't even imagine how many collateral effects we have to account for!

…and, don’t forget to dive into Infinite Waves and climb the Leaderboard.

Want to know one of the secrets to lasting longer? Grab and combine relics of the same theme. You’ll discover the synergies they create!

Ready to take it on?

Devlog #4: Art Development Challenges – January 22nd, 2025

Hi, Gamers!

Tina here—Social Media Expert and Host at RolldBox Games. Today, I’m chatting with Cris, Art Director of the studio at RolldBox Games 👋

We’ve kicked off 2025 with tons of energy and are working hard to wrap up the full development of Masks of the Void so you can dive in as soon as possible!

Today, we're sharing more details about the game and what we’re up to. Hope you enjoy it!
Inside the Development Process
In the full version of the game, you’ll get to fully explore the world of the Void.

One of the key aspects we’ve focused on is the architecture of this world. So, where did the real challenge lie? It was all about nailing the right balance—figuring out the perfect number of pieces and their variety to bring the Void we envisioned to life. You know what they say, “easier said than done”, and turning our ideas into an efficient, playable design that delivers a great experience with the right performance is always a tough quest.
Sneak Peek of Upcoming Content
Game performance always tests us when it comes to striking the tricky balance between delivering a visually captivating experience and ensuring smooth gameplay. Our art team uses various techniques to optimize visual resources. One example is a fake fog material we use in several areas. Its versatility and logic have been applied to other elements as well, like the sand dunes found in the Vortex.

Devlog #3: The Challenges of Creating the Void – January 9th, 2025

Hi, Gamers!

Tina here—Social Media Expert and Host at RolldBox Games. Today, I’m chatting with Ferran, one of our Co-Founders, as well as the Game Designer and Creative Director of the studio at RolldBox Games 👋

We hope you had an amazing time this holiday season with the DEMO of Masks of the Void. In fact, we’ve got a really exciting milestone right now:

Are you ready to take them on?
Inside the Development Process
We gave you a sneak peek at some Void creatures in the previous blog. What do you think? Now, let’s share a cool detail about their behavior.

While developing the AI for this Void creature, one of the toughest challenges our programming team faced was the mechanic of attacking from below the ground. We had to make sure multiple animations didn't interrupt at key moments, like when it emerges from the ground to strike.

The Void is a world like no other. It has power and influence over every other universe.
Sneak Peek of Upcoming Content
How do you imagine the Void Architecture? Given the powerful feeling of exploring the entire Void world, we had a particular vision of the Gothic world in mind.

The transition from concept to modeling was key to properly scaling each element within the overall context. You’ll get the full experience in the product’s full version!
More to share
At the end of the demo, once you've completed that part of the game, you can unlock a second mask – the 'Blood' mask. Have you figured out how it works yet?

Each mask unlocks a different way to use telekinesis.

Which one do you like the most?
