GTA 5 heads to Chicago in this massive modding project

When you think about it, there are surprisingly few open-world games set in Chicago. The city's wide streets, iconic skyline, and instantly recognizable look all lend themselves to videogames, and yet the only game in recent memory to attempt anything like a full recreation of the 312 has been the original Watch Dogs. Thanks to some industrious modders, now you can head there in Grand Theft Auto V.

Designer Filip Vogleš is working with some modding friends to recreate downtown Chicago in Rockstar's signature crime game, and the results so far are already impressive. The broad concrete walkways of the Loop and Magnificent Mile look just like their real-life counterparts, and you can stroll down to the Chicago River to watch speed boats navigate the channel walls. Chicago's public bas relief sculpture and soaring skyscrapers all just look right - it's an impressive piece of work.

The modders are even including a working version of Chicago's famous "L" transit train, which runs on elevated tracks above the streets. That's still a work in progress, but as implemented in the mod right now, it adds a crucial piece of Chicago atmosphere.

GTA Online's weekly update introduces a new alien-themed Business Battle

Spooky season is rumbling on in Los Santos, and GTA Online's weekly update is keeping things ticking along this week. We got the Halloween update seven days ago, but that doesn't mean the content is drying up.

Players have been poking around for the new content and posting their findings on Twitter and Reddit. One of the standout additions this week is a new, alien-themed Business Battle. You can only do this at night, though, because things are notably less spooky during the day, obviously. If you've been out the loop, Business Battles are free mode events that involve players trying to nab cargo for their warehouses. They arrived as part of the After Hours update before being expanded upon in the Los Santos Summer Special update.

You'll also find double the rewards on Business Battles in general alongside alien Survivals and Halloween modes. There's plenty of content still in play from last week, too, such as Peyote Plants and general Halloween-themed goodies. So you can still go out and have some trippy fun. The GTA 5 podium vehicle has also swapped around, as it does, and is now the Fränken Stange.

The best open-world games on PC

From the early days of gaming, with Ultima and Lords of Midnight, open-world games have always been right at home on PC - indeed, those pesky consoles often couldn't handle it. Compare the ambitious early version of Halo to the final, more confined result, for example - and only the PC could hold sprawling regions in the very first Elder Scrolls games. Nevertheless, it was the leap into full 3D with Grand Theft Auto 3 and The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind that really brought the idea of open-world gaming to the masses.

These days, open world can be considered its own genre. You can find accurate depictions of real-life cities or countries, huge fictional expanses with their own landmarks, complete worlds to check out - or even entire galaxies, depending on where you want to go on your next open-world gaming adventure.

The cool thing about the best open-world games is that they can come in a variety of forms: the important feature is that they allow you to explore freely. As such, our list of top open-world games features everything from the best FPS games to car games.
