Just 66 titles saw 80 percent of all playtime in 2023, most older games like Fortnite or GTA 5

The PC and console market grew by 2.6% to $93.5 billion in revenue last year, according to a new report by video games date company Newzoo (cheers, Kotaku!) That’s good, right? Growth is universally a good thing, otherwise all those nice, dead-eyed men in suits wouldn’t keep saying it was. You can’t just lie about growth, that’s a business crime. However, here’s some slightly more worrying news, depending on how much you value new ideas: Of all the game time that gamers spent gaming in quantifiable Big Year for Gaming 2023, just 20% of that time was gamed on games other than the 66 specific games mentioned in the report.

GTA 6 has arrived early, at least in spirit, courtesy of a new GTA 5 mod that brings upcoming protagonist Lucia to the second best-selling game of all time. Rockstar's behemoth is over a decade old now, and while this addition is a fun little early taste of what's to come from the long-awaited next Grand Theft Auto game, it's also a welcome reminder of just how far videogames have come as we book our tickets to Vice City.

Even Jack Black can't believe Rockstar hasn't made a GTA or Red Dead Redemption movie yet

It seems like Jack Black mostly has video game movies on his mind outside of Kung Fu Panda these days, as even he's wondering where a Grand Theft Auto movie is.

No matter which video game movie you look at, Black appears to be in it. He's in the upcoming Minecraft movie, which he will be singing in, he was of course Bowser in last year's Super Mario Bros. Movie, and we'll be hearing him as Borderland's Claptrap in this year's adaptation of the beloved shooter series. Black recently spoke to Total Film (via GamesRadar) about his role as Claptrap, where interestingly enough, he also expressed his befuddlement at the lack of a Grand Theft Auto or Red Dead Redemption movie.

"I can't believe they haven't already started making a movie of any of the Rockstar Games - Grand Theft Auto, but especially Red Dead Redemption," Black said. "Those things are already like movies, you know? I guess that's the thing. Some video games are already halfway there to telling those kind of stories, and there are some movies that are like video games.
