Grand Theft Auto V Legacy News

All I want in 2022 is GTA 5 single-player DLC

We've seen a lot of negative fan reactions in 2021, but one flew under the radar. In September, Rockstar Games revealed that Grand Theft Auto V would be coming to next-generation consoles in 2022. Admittedly, the list of new features is pretty meek, with the trailer making vague promises like "improved graphics" and "seamless character switching", but the negative response was surprisingly comprehensive. You probably would have seen a better reaction from fans if Rockstar had unveiled a line of NFTs based on Trevor's stained underwear for GTA Online.

At the time of writing, the trailer has 299,000 dislikes and just over 64,000 likes. It's not that Grand Theft Auto V isn't great, or that GTA Online doesn't get enough attention, but after eight years with no meaningful single-player updates people seem to be getting bored.

Growing up with Grand Theft Auto has meant meeting colourful characters, travelling to iconic cities that capture a moment in time, and, er, abstaining from violent rampages every time a parent enters the room. The relatively recent addition of GTA Online gives you the pen to write your own story through street races and epic heists, but after so many years it's hard not to feel nostalgic for the joy of a new single-player adventure set in Rockstar's criminal sandbox.

Bully 2 may have been killed by stretching resources too thin, layoffs – report

Game Informer’s Blake Hester published a detailed report all about the Bully 2 that might have been and what led to the studio developing the sequel’s downfall. In short, Rockstar New England was pulled in multiple directions to the point where Bully 2 was no longer the focus of the developers who worked there.

Rockstar New England, which was purchased by Rockstar when the former was Mad Doc Software and was responsible for the next-gen remaster of the first Bully at the time, had ambitious plans for the sequel, a bigger, more characterized game that could stand alongside L.A. Noire and Grand Theft Auto 4 as a grand tentpole release worthy of the Rockstar name.

It was not to be, though, as the studio got pulled in multiple directions, called on to assist with projects like Red Dead Redemption and Max Payne 3 and immersed in the crunch culture that came with working on those games. This caused many developers at Rockstar New England to leave, but the studio was also hit with layoffs, ensuring that Bully 2 wouldn’t see the light of day. It’s a shame, too, because the game was “six to eight hours playable”, though not shippable at that point.

Grand Theft Auto 5 is the most watched game on Twitch in 2021

Kotaku reports that according to the latest year in review report from stream tools company StreamElements, Grand Theft Auto 5 is the most watched game on Twitch, dominating a chart full of games that have solidly lodged themselves at the top for multiple years running.

It might sound slightly surprising that a game that’s eight years old is still topping the Twitch charts, but that’s because Twitch doesn’t differentiate between Grand Theft Auto 5 and Grand Theft Auto Online, the source of the former’s extremely long tail and a seemingly endless source of content for the streaming giant and those who use it. Other games that have staying power in the chat include League of Legends, Fortnite, and Valorant.

Elsewhere in the report, the most-watched new IP came in at #18 in New World, Amazon’s popular MMORPG. And you can see a healthy dose of mobile games charting high numbers as well, like Call of Duty: Mobile and PUBG MOBILE.

GTA Online's Christmas update brings snow, new cars, and festive freebies

It's the most wonderful time of the year for the citizens of GTA Online. Not only are the streets of Los Santos now caked in snow, but there are heaps of discounts and freebies to check out when you next log in. You've even got some new cars to stick in your garage if your wallet is fat enough (thanks, Tez2).

Snow is a bit of a tradition in GTA Online and Red Dead Online. Not only does it give Los Santos a festive vibe, but you're free to run around the streets and toss snowballs at other players. GTA Online has been going for a few years now, so snow also brings about a hint of nostalgia, too, as we all get older.

If you fancy a garage filler, the Overflod Zeno is now available for $2,820,000 GTA bucks from Legendary Motorsport. The car was introduced in the recent Contract update and is a two-door hypercar. The Gallivanter Baller ST is also here, and it's free between now and December 30. Rockstar introduced the luxury four-door SUV during GTA Online's latest update, featuring it prominently in a few missions with Dr Dre.

GTA Online's newest story has you hunting for Dr. Dre's music-filled phone

A whole new story expansion is on its way to Grand Theft Auto Online on December 15 and hip-hop royalty Dr. Dre is its centre of attention. Having previously made a surprise cameo in the game's Cayo Perico Heist update, Dre has this time been given the spotlight by developer Rockstar.

According to Rockstar, GTA Online's 'The Contract' expansion will see you hooked up with Franklin Clinton and friends by Lamar Davis to help head up F. Clinton and Partner, which is described by the studio as "a new 'celebrity solutions agency' catering to the Vinewood elite." Of course, if you're starting up a talent agency then you'll need to have a good partner (this is where you come in), and one big-ticket client to get your name out there (this is where Dre comes in).

With DJ Pooh looking to connect Dre and Franklin, things are looking just peachy. That is until it transpires that someone has gotten their hands on Dre's phone. And it's not just any phone, either - it's filled to the brim with unreleased tunes Dre has produced exclusively for the game (that's GTA, not the rapper).
