GTA RP: the best servers and how to join them

What is GTA RP and how do you download it? Grand Theft Auto V fans are bound to be wondering that as Rockstar's open-world game continues to skyrocket in viewership figures on Twitch thanks to its RPG community. The reason for the resurgence is a host of prominent streamers who have been engaging with the game's role playing servers, such as Lirik, Summit1G, and TimTheTatMan.

All this will be familiar to anyone who has used Skyrim's Alternate Start mods - GTA RP allows you to join the game as a regular NPC as opposed to any of the main characters thanks to the installation of a mod. The trend of role-playing has been around for years as it proves to be quite idyllic - instead of being thrust into the spotlight, you can live out a normal life and inhabit whatever character you'd like to be.

If you're new to all this, however, it can prove to be quite daunting. You need to download the required mods to make it work, find and apply to join servers, and then figure out how to properly play the thing itself. On top of all that, you'll also come across a bunch of slang terms you may be unfamiliar with. GTA RP's latest star is Cyberpunk 2077's Johnny Silverhand

One of my favourite things about Grand Theft Auto V's roleplaying community is the characters you stumble across. Last year we spoke to the GTA roleplayers who task themselves with enforcing Los Santos, and the kinds of strain that streaming those sessions of roleplay bring.

Since the NoPixel 3.0 GTA RP server's launch, though, variety streamers have started returning to Los Santos to see what's new. As more attention has returned to the scene, a particular GTA RP streamer has begun to appear more consistently on Reddit. Content creator Burn roleplays as Cyberpunk 2077's Johnny Silverhand but doesn't settle for merely looking or sounding like the Samurai frontman. He'll strike a T-pose in the middle of a conversation, and generally glitches out anything he touches.

The most viral clip of Burn so far involves an encounter with Félix 'xQc' Lengyel. It has plenty of glitches you'll likely recognise from Cyberpunk 2077, from T-poses to character models going awry. The whole thing starts with xQc falling off his bike, and trying to talk to Burn while he bugs out and hovers in mid-air as he tries to get back into his car. The Silverhand impression is funny enough, but watching other roleplayers try to adlib and react to it is genuinely amusing.

Why would Rockstar release GTA 6 when GTA 5 keeps selling like this?

Grand Theft Auto V will not stop selling. Take-Two has announced that GTA 5 sales have now exceeded 140 million units shipped, up from the 135 million number announced in August 2020. You might be losing sight of just how massive this number is based, but those sales figures exceed nearly every console platform ever released - all but the PS2 and DS. That's absurd, friends.

The 140 million figure is current as of December 2020. This total of units 'shipped' includes retail discs sent to stores but not yet sold through to players, but in the modern age where the majority of game sales are now digital, that distinction means a lot less than it used to. This makes 2020 GTA 5's biggest sales year since its launch in 2013.

So if you're wondering why that GTA 6 release date still seems so far away, there really isn't much incentive for Rockstar or Take-Two to pump out a sequel when the existing game is continuing to sell better than the vast majority of new release videogames.

GameStonk, as told by GTA 5 players

You've probably heard about GameStonk at this point. Last month a group of Reddit users invested heavily in GameStop shares to flip the script on a few hedge funds. The group did cause some disruption for a bit, but ultimately, many people lost a lot of money.

A lot of it has been brought about meme culture on Reddit, so it perhaps fits that the whole thing has got its own retelling through a Grand Theft Auto V machinima. Does watching the video make this entire ordeal less confusing? No, not really, but It's an amusing video to get your Monday off to a bright, cheery, and silly start - all things we like at PCGamesN.

The video involves someone riding high after getting in on the GameStonk buzz. He's quite chuffed about the situation, and shouts "to the moon!" a lot - a phrase I am now filling our Slack with. Eventually, he comes across someone who reckons this all sounds quite neat and gets in on it himself. That doesn't go well, and shenanigans ensue.

GTA 5 tops Twitch after launch of new RP server

The latest update to a GTA Online role-play server pushed Grand Theft Auto 5 to the top of the Twitch charts this week. For a hot minute, the open-world game was being watched on stream by over 400,000 people.

The end of January, a new trailer heralded the release of the NoPixel 3.0 GTA RP server, a GTA Online server designed for role-playing in a makeshift San Andreas. Players can be criminals, cops, regular people just making ends meet, whatever, all existing in this MMORPG game-like ecosystem. The server is made using the FiveM modding framework, and upheld by a dedicated team of volunteers.

The server is open, but you have to apply via the NoPixel website to be cleared for entry, with a waiting time of two to four weeks. This somewhat limited availability has worked out, however, because on Friday, 413,000 viewers were tuning into creators on Twitch playing Grand Theft Auto 5. Part of NoPixel's charm is that it's communal, you watch content creators, then go enter the world yourself, everyone sharing in the experience. The peak it created indicates quite a stir among the playerbase, given that's four times the current amount playing the crime game.
