GTA V and RDR2 VR modder receives DMCA takedown from Take-Two Interactive

A modder working to overhaul GTA V, Red Dead Redemption 2 and Mafia: Definitive Edition with VR support says he’s received an unexplained DMCA takedown notice from publisher Take-Two Interactive. Known as LukeRoss, he says the DMCA will force him to remove all content relating to games produced by Take-Two's subsidiaries such as Rockstar and 2K, including his VR mods. However, he also states the notice provides no clarification from Take-Two about how he's actually breaching their copyright.

GTA V, Mafia, and Red Dead Redemption 2 VR mods are dead – and Take 2 Interactive killed them

If you’ve been enjoying either Red Dead Redemption 2, GTA V, or Mafia: The Definitive Edition in VR thanks to some handy fan-made mods, we’ve got some bad news. Thanks to a DMCA claim by Take Two Interactive - the parent company of Rockstar Games and 2K - has led development on the most popular VR mods to grind to a halt.

This news comes via Luke Ross - the sole creator of a variety of VR mods for the aforementioned games - who released a lengthy post to his supporters. In it, he claims to have received a DMCA request from Take Two Interactive for his projects and that the company requested that he “remove all their copyrighted works from [his] Patreon page”. This was confirmed by Kotaku who reached out to Patreon directly.

In a post to his followers, Luke Ross writers: “As I publicly stated many times, I honor and respect copyright and my intention has always been to allow gamers to experience the wonderful worlds created by Rockstar and 2K (among other companies) in Virtual Reality, which only translates to more customer satisfaction and more copies sold for them. I don't sell or host anything exploiting or repurposing their original IP and assets and my mods only work if the user already owns a legal copy of their original games.”

Turn your real-world steps into in-game walking with this app

Have you ever been playing on your PC and wondered what it would be like to actually walk around the fantastical worlds of Night City in Cyberpunk or Los Santos in GTA V for yourself? To leave the WASD keys or PS4 pad behind and explore with your own two feet? With the STEPL Mobile app, that dream might not be too far away.

Posted on r/games recently by the solo developer behind STEPL, you can see a mysterious pair of legs move up and down in place and cause characters in Cyberpunk 2077, GTA V, and Horizon: Forbidden West to start wandering around! With a controller in one hand handling the right analogue stick, and a phone in your pocket, it looks as though the app lets you step in the shoes of your favourite characters (granted it’s not something like a racing game, of course).

Jumping into the video description of Youtube, it looks as though STEPL is intended as a workout tool: “STEPL is a good workout motivator if you play sitting for many hours instead of walking or forcing yourself to work out - It lets you get fit while gaming. Stick your phone in your pocket, and when you take steps in place your character will also take steps forward.” This is reflected on the official website too, which champions goals such as saving time for users, helping with exercise motivation, and helping people to live longer.

It looks like GTA 5's Michael might be coming to GTA Online

A new mysterious NPC has been added to GTA Online, which might not sound too exciting on its own, but it may just point towards some future content for the massively popular action adventure game.

But before we talk about this NPC, we need to lay some groundwork. Data Miner rollschuh2282 discovered a new scenario spawn point in GTA online. This spawn point, located in front of the Record A studios.

This spawn point, found with a “movie_set” pedestrian model set, was dug up from Xbox Series X/S and PS5 game files. This bit of code sleuthing, paired with the recent Vespucci Job remix featuring numerous references to movies and cinema, has led some to speculate that a future content update focused on the movies is on the way.
