⚔️ Into the Dungeon #2: How the Vambrace Universe came into being!

Greetings adventurers!

Dungeon Monarch is the second game in the Vambrace universe that we are developing. But as the word “universe” implies: there is still room for more! But for now, let's dive into the past and look at how the Vambrace universe came to be.

I laid the foundation for it 26 years ago. But one thing at a time.

When I got into game development, I realized that I had the dream to bring stories and settings to life, one by one. My amazing friend and brilliant writer T.L. Riven went through them, and the story of Lyric in Vambrace: Cold Soul was the beginning of what the team would eventually create.

I was thrilled to find out that the world of the game was so finely crafted, and I knew that I could build on the stories that had been hidden in the depths of my HDDs. Therefore, all of the fantasy stories that Dvora Studio has created, and will continue to create, are more or less based on this game world, which we call the Vambrace Saga.

From the creation of a world to its destruction, in its myriad chronicles lie countless villains and heroes whose names we still do not know, and in that order and chaos lie the adventures and challenges, the noble sacrifices and meaningful moments that Dvora Studio seeks to create.

Some of our games have the word "Vambrace" in them, or are set in the world of the Vambrace Saga. This fantasy theme has a very special value for Dvora Studio, and for me as the founder. This fantasy world actually started back in 1998, when I was in the sixth grade of my elementary school, and started drawing pictures and making up stories with creative characters and creative episodes.

At the time, gaming culture was starting to develop in South Korea, and I was immersed in the graphics and themes of games like StarCraft, Genesis: Tempest, Tomb Raider 3, KKND2, Dune2000, Age of Empires, and many others. I used to draw various copycats and invented characters in my sketch books all day, and I used to make up crazy and weird stories to share with my classmates for fun.

As I entered adolescence, the gap between the ideal and the reality became more and more obvious, and I used to relieve my academic stress and worries about the future with these creative and fun fantasy stories. I was fascinated by wonderful stories such as the Harry Potter series, the Lord of the Rings films, the Chronicles of Narnia, and other adventure tales, and I started to think: "I need to study to make a good story".

The more I drew, the more I realized that I didn't just love drawing, I loved creating the lives and stories of the characters in my drawings, so I studied more structured texts and settings to refine the stories and worlds I'd been creating since I was a kid, and as an adult, they've been piling up in my personal archive.

And you already guessed it: Vambrace: Dungeon Monarch is one of those stories.

Talk to you again really soon!

⚔️ Into the Dungeon #1: Meet Dungeon Monarch-Developer Dvora Studio!

Greetings Dungeon Monarchs!

Before releasing Vambrace: Dungeon Monarch later this year, we want to tell you more about the game with our "Into the Dungeon" update series. But not only about the game, but also about us: Dvora Studio - the team behind titles like The Coma, Vambrace and Scarlet Hood.

Dvora Studio was created on the 28th August 2015, but I spent one year working in cafes in order to make the first game in the Coma Series. The formal company name was Devespresso Games (Dev + Espresso Coffee), as this was what shaped the first few years of the indie game development life. I changed the name to Dvora Studio later on, because it was easier to remember:

Back then, we struggled to secure a programmer who can actually build the game. I’m a graphic artist with a bunch of cool stories, but I need to have someone who actually makes the games with me. Those seats were taken by two programmer friends, who were later replaced by my cousin, and eventually filled with three indie game programmers now.

To create the narrative stories and events, I requested custom modules and DB forms to shape the visuals of the games by myself for Vambrace: Cold Soul, The Coma 2: Vicious Sisters, and Scarlet Hood and the Wickend Wood. It added a lot to my workload, but I think it was possible because I wasn't married with kids back then, because it was so rewarding to work day and night to get the game done and to share the story and the characters and the world with gamers.

T. L. Riven and KYNO have been a huge part of that journey. They've kept my imagination and inspiration flowing and helped me stay on track to keep making games. The stories that T. L. Riven has built on top of my ideas have been amazing and exciting, and he's gone on to do some amazing things as a game writer and is now a game producer for another company. KYNO is now a brand new game designer, designing and creating sophisticated and highly playable games.

I’m grateful that the games we make have been described by many as having 'unique artwork, beautiful music, and immersive, detailed worlds', which has led to a lot of people who love and remember these game worlds (The Coma Series & Vambrace Saga), and it's a pleasure to work for them.

Now I'm married, and I'm a dad with two babies to look after. Obviously, I look at the world differently, I have a different sense of purpose, and making a game with those experiences adds a different depth than before. I want to continue to make games that people remember. I want to make games for as long as I have the energy.

There are currently six developers working at the company, including myself, and we're braving the unbearably hot Korean summer weather. I know a lot of people are surprised at how six people can produce two game projects, but it's actually happening. We have a lot of ideas in our heads, and we can't wait to show them off.

Talk to you again really soon!

Try tower defense deckbuilder Vambrace Dungeon Monarch in new demo

Take the deck-building elements of Magic the Gathering or Slay the Spire and combine them with the base-building, defensive side of Orcs Must Die and Kingdom Rush, then sprinkle on some of that TFT-brand autobattling, and you have new Steam strategy game Vambrace: Dungeon Monarch. Its tactical fantasy stylings are making their way to PC in late 2024, but you can try it out right now thanks to a free Steam demo that's just landed on the Valve store.
