Artisans In The World Of Vikings

Hello Warriors and Shield Maidens,

What do you think of when you hear the term „Viking“? Conquerors? Seafarers? Fighters? All of it is true. Not to mention their family bonds, which seem to be second to none. But especially the images of warriors overshadow a more basic truth: the Viking society rests on the foundation of artisans.

The shipwright, for example, is a master engineer who crafted the iconic longships, thus unlocking the world beyond the horizon and, with that, enabling long-range exploration, trade, and raids. Equally vital was the blacksmith, who in a quite alluring way mixed soot and mystique. With raw power as well as finesse, he was able to transform ore into essential farming tools or formidable weapons. Without artisans like these, the Age of Vikings, marked by mobility as well as ingenuity and battle might, would have been quite limited.

Some would even go as far as saying that artisans became the visual poets of Norse culture, in the sense that their worldview is evident in every object they created. Let’s look at intricate metalwork on jewelry, for example, or animal carvings on a wagon. Some might say they are more than just decoration. Way more. They could be seen as a visual language representing the intertwined forces of the Viking belief systems. An amulet with Thor’s hammer or vibrant patterns on the ships‘ sails could be seen as a portable statement of the artisan‘s and even more so of the client‘s beliefs, identity, or status. The work of an artisan can become a direct pathway to prestige and economic power. A master craftsman generally had a high standing and was sought after by jarls and other high-ranking figures who needed symbols of their status and lineage. The everyday work of crafters, from simple soapstone bowls to fine combs, fabrics, and processed metal, became valuable trade goods, building the wealth of the individual as well as the renown of the settlement.

And you can become a part of that journey, once you travel with Vikings Dynasty to the Steineyjar Islands on an extraordinary adventure. Not only can you learn various trades, but once your travels put you on the path to becoming a jarl and distributing jobs to your villagers, you will see and feel that the artisans were the architects of Viking culture.

We can’t wait to show you more.

Until then!

Welcome to Viking Society

Hello Vikings and Shield Maidens,

Today, we want to invite you to a typical Viking village, often marked with -by as a suffix for its name.
The settlement was more than just a mere collection of buildings or farms. It is the foundation of Viking society as well as a source of identity, security, and sustenance.
Even though their portrayal in pop culture might give you the impression, most Norsemen and their families were not raiders, but farmers, traders, and craftsmen, who were deeply rooted in their local community.

The village provided not only safety, but also the base structure for daily life, such as organizing collective labor for building homes or managing the shared resources of the field, fjord, and forest.
It is here, where traditions are passed down, where social bonds are forged, and the rhythm of nature is a vital part of existence, from sowing crops to seasonal feasts.
The survival of the individual is undissolubly linked to the cooperation of everybody in the village, as well as the prosperity of the community.

Location of the village was key: The more fertile the surrounding fields are, the better, since barley, oats or rye not only feed the community but could also be traded or used for ship provisioning. Livestock was kept for food, wool and hides, while artisans were able to produce tools, sturdy textiles and pottery, all of which formed the foundation of the economy, both domestic as well as in trade.

Additionally, the village was the focal point of culture, law and governance. Under the leadership and guidance of a jarl like Freydis , disputes were settled and laws enacted as a community. The village was also home to cultural life and the Viking belief system. You could find burial mounds, and of course, the communal feasting halls, where stories of gods and heroes were recited by skalds like Snorri , thus reinforcing a shared belief system and social hierarchy.

And once you are able to venture into the Steineyjar archipelago, you will not only experience firsthand what it means to be Viking, you will be able to shape the lives of the villagers around you as well.

We can’t wait to show you more!

The Ink Of Destiny: Tattoos In Viking Culture

Hello Shield Maidens and Warriors,

The image of a tattooed Viking has become a staple of modern popular culture from TV shows to movies to games. And not only dedicated tattoo fans are fascinated with the powerful symbols and intricate designs. While the historical meaning and even certainty of widespread tattooing among the Norse people is heavily debated in academic circles, the symbolic meaning of those designs is deeply rooted in verified Viking culture.

One thing is for sure: If Vikings were tattooed, the ink would be way more than just decoration. It would be potentially a sign of protection (and as such similar to a rune engraved into a weapon), a story of their social status or even a connection to the gods.

Primarily, the tattoos would have functioned as talismans of protection and a divine favor. In a world filled with giants and unpredictable forces, symbols and runes acted as a form of invocation.

Imagine a tattoo of Mjölnir, for example. It would not only represent dedication to Thor, but also serve as a plea for strength and protection in battle or a safeguard amidst the unforeseeable forces of chaos.
The Valknut was a symbol of the afterlife and the slain and could mark the bearer’s readiness for Valhalla.

Tattoos like these would not only represent a way to carry the power of the gods into every struggle, every fight, and every adventure. They would also mark a narrative map of a Viking’s identity and his or her accomplishments. Don’t forget that Viking society is built on stories. Tales of great and dangerous voyages, heroic deeds, ancestral lineage and fierce battles.

The interlocking nots of the Helm of Awe (Œgishjalmr) or the chaotic weave of the Web of Wyrd, which we use in our logo, could be used to tell a story of courage or the Viking’s role in the fabric of the universe. In other words: The ink under the skin would tell as much of a story as the scars. Nowadays it would be seen as a public declaration of who someone is and what they have achieved, a permanent record of a life lived with purpose. But take all this with a pinch of salt and as content, where we leverage our creative freedom to give you a richer gaming experience - since all talk about tattoos in Viking culture is highly hypothetical, as we mentioned in the beginning.

Which is why in our powerful character creator we will give you the chance to give your hero or heroine a wide variety of tattoos to customize your virtual alter ego in the world of Vikings Dynasty. This is one of the very few elements in the game where we deviate quite a bit from the historical truth and step over into the area of creative freedom. Because for us it is also important that you can establish your own Viking adventures. Our plans are to extend the selection, so your player character can show off the marks of their personal journey through the Steineyjar archipelago.

We can’t wait to show you more in the future.

Skål,
