No Man's Sky's second seasonal expedition starts off with a challenge

Last month, space exploration craft 'em up No Man's Sky launched its new "expeditions" game mode. Expeditions are limited time adventures though, so the first one has come to a close and the second one, called Beachhead, has launched today. I've definitely not landed on a beach though. This second expedition has stranded me, and everyone else, a long and frozen walk away from our ships. This should get interesting.

No Man's Sky's second expedition starts today

No Man's Sky players are embarking on the space game's second seasonal 'expedition'. The shared experience system first launched in April with the Pioneers Expedition, and today sees the start of the Beachhead Expedition, which developer Hello Games says is "a journey with a very different pace and structure" to the first.

"We are very excited to explore the gameplay and stories that this new mode gives us the chance to create," the developers write in an update post. "Once again, players will start from a new save and all on the same planet." From there, No Man's Sky pilots will follow a guided plot that takes them through a new batch of story content, challenges, and rewards.

"Alongside the new Expedition, Nada and Polo's regular research effort aboard the Space Anomaly has shifted into a new gear," Hello Games hints mysteriously. "Priest Entity Nada has detected something thought impossible: a fluctuation in history already written. A new pattern is emerging in the stories of the ancient Gek, Korvax, and Vy'keen."

No Man's Sky's new Expeditions mode adds seasonal challenges

As it does, No Man's Sky has expanded its universe with a biggo new update. This time, it's beefed up with a brand new game mode called Expeditions. A bit like a seasonal event, Expeditions give players a bunch of time-limited goals and set them off along the same path together. They seem like they'll channel the energy of some massive community scavenger hunt, everyone knocking around close to one another as they zip from goal to goal, which actually sounds like good fun. The first Expedition has just kicked off and is set to run for two months.

No Man's Sky gets shared, seasonal expeditions with another major update

That's right, No Man's Sky is getting yet another major update. Last month, the Companions update let you keep the space game's weird and wonderful critters as pets for the first time, and now, another huge content drop is introducing a "new seasonal way to explore the No Man's Sky universe together".

Called the Expeditions update, the new patch adds seasonal, shared exploratory events called - yep, you guessed it - expeditions. All players will start off on the same planet, and an expedition will be plotted out ahead of them, reaching across the survival-adventure game's galaxy to follow to its end. To begin with, you'll get a "wild and varied collection of technology, customisations, new ships, and weapons - providing a glimpse of some of the unseen possibilities in the universe", as Hello Games explains in a press release.

Expeditions will include challenges and milestones to complete for rewards, such as base parts, customisation options, an "exclusive" ship design, and new jetpack style. Some of these challenges will be easier to hit, while others are aimed at the most dedicated of No Man's Sky spacefarers.
