Linux: Fixed Krita for Flatpak version of Steam.

Hi again Krita community, I have a small (but important) update for Linux users.

We've fixed Krita on the Flatpak version of Steam!

Now, to give a bit of a technical explanation for anyone who cares, Krita is normally distributed on Linux in a portable application format called "AppImage". Since we brought Krita to Steam for Linux, it's been just the same, distributed through Steam as an AppImage.

For the majority of Steam users on Linux this has worked just fine, but an increasing number of Linux users have started opting to download Steam itself as in a different, portable containerized format called "Flatpak". And this is where we ran into a nasty compatibility bug: despite my best efforts, I just couldn't make our Krita AppImage run correctly inside the Steam Flatpak sandbox environment.

Long story short, we've solved this problem by changing the way we distribute and run Krita on Steam for Linux. Now, instead of distributing the AppImage file itself, we're extracting the AppImage contents and distributing them to Steam users.

At any rate... I'm sorry for the inconvenience that this has created over the last few months for some of our Linux users. As a FOSS program through and through, it should come as no surprise that we care a lot about the platform and use it heavily for development. Hopefully Krita for Steam should now work perfectly for all of our Linux users, no matter how you have Steam installed on your system.

Notice: Some Linux (Flatpak) users having issues! [FIXED]

Hi there.

I just want to let everybody know that we've been informed that some Linux (Flatpak) users are having issues running Krita through Steam at the moment. I'm in the process of trying to find out what went wrong and I'll let you all know as soon as it's fixed.

UPDATE: This problem appears to only be affecting Linux users who have Steam installed through Flatpak. It seems like the Krita AppImage will fail to mount while inside the Flatpak container environment. However, there is a workaround, because you can still launch the AppImage that Steam gives you from outside of Steam (either using a file browser to navigate to it, wherever your Steam content is installed, or from a terminal). Alternatively, you may just want to use a non-Flatpak Steam install for now. We want to make sure Krita works well for all of our users, so I will do my best to figure out a way to solve this Flatpak/Steam/AppImage incompatibility in the future.

Sorry for the inconvenience and thank you for your support.

UPDATE: As of the latest patch, this problem as been fixed. Krita should now work equally well for all Linux users regardless of how you have Steam installed. Please continue to let our small team know if something isn't working the way it should. Sorry again for the inconvenience.

Krita 5.1.3 Released

Hey all, Krita 5.1.3 is now out on Steam. Sorry that this update is a tiny bit later on Steam than other channels but I was out of town for release week!

Today we’re releasing Krita 5.1.3. This is strictly a bug fix release, but we recommend updating to everyone. There are also performance improvements because we updated some of the libraries we use! Note that we have skipped 5.1.2 because of a last-minute bug fix (with the exception of Android, where we are still on 5.1.2 due to signing trouble, and thus bugs 461436 and 459510 are still at large. They will be fixed in the next version).
