Stellaris is free to try until Monday

Get in loser, we're going to conquer the galaxy! No, this isn't about the Mean Girls starting a space empire, it's about the space-faring grand strategy game Stellaris being free to try. The free Stellaris trial period is going on now and runs through the weekend, giving everyone a shot at ruling an empire of stars.

Stellaris, which first launched in 2016, has steadily grown over its lifetime, and the possibilities for the way you approach galactic conquest are just about endless. You'll start by picking a civilisation to lead, each with its own guiding philosophies and traits, then set about exploring and expanding to new worlds, where you'll encounter new opportunities and challenges in each one.

If you wind up enjoying the game, you can take advantage of some steep sale prices this weekend. The Stellaris base game is 75% off, putting it at $9.99 / £8.74. If you've already gotten into Stellaris, you can fill out your collection with discounts up to 50% on several of its DLCs, and 64% off the starter pack bundle, which includes the Utopia, Apocalypse, Leviathans Story Pack, and Synthetic Dawn Story Pack DLC.

Stellaris 3.1 is out and adds new content to old DLC

Scifi grand strategy Stellaris's free 3.1 update, titled "Lem", is out now. This is the first update created by "The Custodians", a new team formed within developers PDS Green focused on free, quarterly updates which tweak game balance, add new content to old DLC and fix bugs.

The "Lem" update does all three, changing how tradition trees work, adding new features to old species packs such as 2016's Planetoids, and rebalancing some Civics and Origins.

Stellaris' 3.1 'Lem' patch is available now

Stellaris' next major update - 3.1 'Lem' - named after renowned science fiction author Stanislav Lem is available now. This patch is the first to come from the grand strategy game's new 'custodians' team which is concerned with smaller, more frequent updates looking at bug fixing, quality of life improvements, and adding more value to previous expansions.

That said, the 3.1 patch is unusually large, adding new content to nearly every Stellaris DLC that's been released so far, mainly because the team has had longer to work on it. Future updates are going to be smaller and more regular, with the next custodians patch expected in around three months.

The highlights of the 3.1 update include major new content drops for the Plantoids and Humanoids expansion packs, and a rework of tradition trees so that they are no longer hardlocked. Depending on what add-ons you own, you can select which traditions you want to feature in a playthrough. There are also new trees that have been added into the Apocalypse and Nemesis expansions.
