This War of Mine's spiritual successor demo now available!

Hello everyone,

As 11 bit studios we're known mostly as the developers of This War of Mine and Frostpunk but there are more games we're working on! The Alters is a title developed by a team that consists of many former This War of Mine creators and as such is in many ways a spiritual successor to this cult game. While the setting is totally different, taking you to a distant planet instead of a war-torn city, the game aims to ask as many important questions. Just like in This War of Mine, The Alters’ main protagonist faces impossible odds and must discover how far he is willing to go in order to save his life.

Jan Dolski is a simple worker who faces impossible odds. Crash-landing on a distant planet, stranded and alone, he seems trapped with no way out. Jan’s only hope for survival is to employ additional helping hands on board his mobile base… but how? Improvising as he goes, Jan uses the local Rapidium substance to create alternate versions of himself: The Alters.

Play The Alters Demo and see for yourself what it's like to be Jan(s).

Right now, until June 17th you can play The Alters demo during Steam Next Fest. Give it a try:

Frostpunk dev's decade-old strategy hit suddenly has 132% more players

There can only be two possible reasons for gamers to flood back to a game that was released ten years ago: either it's an incredible game, or it's very, very cheap. In the case of This War of Mine, both of these are true, as the visceral survival game just shot up in popularity thanks to a free play promotion over the weekend.

Brutal 9/10 strategy game is free on Steam, but just for a few days

Many of the best wartime strategy games on PC are about bombast and conquest, or defying greater odds to claim noble victory. This War of Mine is not. Inspired by conflicts such as the siege of Sarajevo during the Bosnian War in the '90s, you control a small group of civilians doing their best to stay alive under extreme circumstances. If you've never experienced its punishing brand of survival, you can now try it as a free game on Steam through this weekend, with the ability to buy it at a huge discount if you like it.

This War of Mine - a glimpse of the future

How the time flies! This War of Mine celebrates its 10th anniversary this year. So far it has sold over 9 million copies worldwide, yet we’re sure that even more people will receive its powerful message during upcoming days. That’s because, until January 29th, you’ll be able to play This War of Mine for free on Steam!

On the same occasion, we’ve also decided to update the game's menu. The newsfeed you’ll now find there has been designed to better stay in touch with you. This new feature is subtle and aesthetically restrained so rest assured that its contents will be informative and will not include any banners or brazen marketing messaging.

This anniversary also gives us a great opportunity to highlight the game that all devoted fans of This War of Mine should keep their eyes on.

Stranded on an inhospitable planet, Jan must create alternative versions of himself to survive on board a mobile base. These “Alters” are more than just new sets of skills. Each one of them is a human being, a genetic alteration of Jan Dolski with emotions, fears, and memories. Getting along with them is a struggle in itself for our hero, a struggle he cannot avoid as impending doom is approaching with each second. It’s this form of emotional management, combined with the management of the base space itself that fans of This War of Mine will find both familiar and satisfying.
