War Stories: How This War of Mine manipulates your emotions | Community Update

Hi there, Community!

Exciting stuff! Recently, ArsTechnica released an episode of War Stories series - and this one is really important for us, because it brings up the topic of This War of Mine's development process.

Aleksander Kauch, our lead game programmer for This War of Mine, goes behind the scenes of the game's development and explains how we have turned a management sim into a visceral experience about civilians at war. You can watch the episode here:
https://youtu.be/FNrCAWVKVQ0
"This War of Mine is a game defined by its cultural roots—it is a Slavic game, created by people from Central Europe who grew up hearing stories of Nazi occupation from their grandparents. It lacks most of the hallmarks of more stereotypically "Western" stories—there isn't a happy ending or even a particularly neat resolution. It is not a game designed to give you a quick dopamine hit of joy or to tell a complex tale of good and evil. Instead, it is a game designed to make you feel something—to evoke emotions and then to force the player to confront and contemplate those emotions."

This War Of Mine: Stories - Episode 3 | Community Update

Fellow Gamers!

Every day we are getting closer to the reveal of the next chapter in This War of Mine: Stories.

Before that happens we’re thrilled to tell you where we’re going with it. However, you know how we are, we do not tend to spoil too much but we can say the new Story is going to introduce brand new mechanics, probably the biggest change in “classic” This War of Mine experience. This game speaks distinctly through its gameplay so adding something new vastly enriches the way you can discover it. And again, like two previous expansions, it is going to have a strong original plot driving the entire story - but there’s still a bit too early to tell you what the exact theme is. Yet, we want to make a big bang and shake This War of Mine universe - the game is 4 years old, after all! Hence, trust us, the main theme is very powerful.

Here’s Tomasz, Lead Artist behind the expansion, working on a new location. You need to know not only new mechanics are on their way, but new locations, unique shelter and unfamiliar people (civilians and soldiers) to meet, too. We’re very excited to bring those additions to our loyal This War of Mine community - and we hope you are delighted to hear about them as well.

You can grab This War of Mine and its DLCs here:

https://store.steampowered.com/app/282070/This_War_of_Mine/

That should go without saying - but every Season Pass owner will get the new Story for free. And what you can see on the header image of this announcement is actually the new shelter. Take a look, try to guess what we’re working on and stay tuned as more info is coming soon.

Best,
11 bit studios

PS. As you may know, we are also very excited about this year's release of Children of Morta - a story driven adventure game from our publishing portfolio. If you want to check it out and be up to date - be sure to add it to your Steam Wishlist:

This War of Mine Breaks the Barrier of 4.5 Million Units Sold!

We are proud to report that our hit game, This War of Mine has recently hit the major milestone of 4.5 million units sold over its lifetime.

The indie hit about the harrowing life of civilians in a besieged city during times of war has performed successfully on all platforms (PC, Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, iOS, and Android), and can be attributed as the big boost that helped put 11 bit studios to the forefront of indie publishers on the scene.

Starting with a single unit sold on Christmas Island, the game's community is widely global with players from coast to coast on every continent! Named by the New York Times as a game that “lets you safely explore wretched realities of the human condition”, and described as “a nightmare you shouldn't miss”, This War of Mine was also picked as one of the games of the year by The Guardian, Die Welt, El Mundo and many other mainstream media when it was released in 2014.

The game’s successes don’t stop there with This War of Mine winning awards at the Independent Games Festival, the SXSW Cultural Innovation Award, Games For Change and over 100 other awards. Dedicated to paying it forward, we have also donated $500,000 to the charity War Child through sales of the This War of Mine DLC.

Not content to sit back on our heels, we are now offering a new standalone story-driven expansion, This War of Mine: Stories - Father's Promise on both iOS and Android for only $1.99. Grab it here or here!

Thank you for being with us on this amazing journey!
