Sid Meier's Civilization VI News

Two-thirds of all Civilization 6 civs will get a rebalance in the 4X game's April update

The Vietnam and Kublai Khan pack has just been released, but we've already been given a glimpse as to what's coming later in the year for acclaimed 4X game Civilization VI. The latest New Frontier Pass pack is the penultimate release in this year-long run of micro-DLC packs, with the final pack due out in March.

In April, however, the developers at Firaxis have confirmed that they will be embarking on a sizable civilisation balance update. During their most recent developer livestream, they stated in chat that they plan to tackle roughly two-thirds of all of the civs currently in existence in Civ VI.

By the time the final New Frontier Pass pack releases, there'll be 50 civs in the game in total, so we can expect to see changes to between 30-35 of them based on the dev's original statement. There are plenty of Civ 6 civs that are strong across the victory types, but also plenty that aren't so good, or who don't combo that well with their respective Civ 6 leaders.

New Civ 6 civ Vietnam's leader, Lady Trieu, will not put up with your nonsense

January 28, 2021 The Civ 6 Vietnam and Kublai Khan pack is out now on Steam and the Epic Games Store.

The penultimate expansion pack from Civilization VI's New Frontier Pass was recently revealed. The Vietnam and Kublai Khan pack introduces the latter as a leader for the Chinese and Mongolian civilisations, but it also adds in a new Civ 6 civ in the form of Vietnam. We've just been given our first glimpse as to how they'll play as a faction in the popular 4X game.

Vietnam was initially teased as a 'terrain and culture'-focused civ, and we've been given some additional details as to what this means. When playing as Vietnam, you can only build land-based speciality districts on rainforest, marsh, or woods tiles. This will restrict your building options up to a point, but it's worth noting that you'll be able to plant new woodland tiles (but not rainforest) on grasslands with the 'medieval fares' civic.

You also get additional production, science, or culture bonuses depending on which tile your districts are being built on. The general wisdom at the moment seems to be to build districts early to get ahead of the competition, especially in production or science.

Civilization 6's newest leader, Kublai Khan, will conquer the world through trade

January 28, 2021 The Civ 6 Vietnam and Kublai Khan pack is out now on Steam and the Epic Games Store.

Civilization VI's latest New Frontier Pass pack, the Vietnam and Kublai pack, is due out on Thursday and we've just been given details on how new Civ 6 leader Kublai Khan will play. The grandson of Ghengis Khan is being introduced as a new leader option for two existing civilizations - China and Mongolia - and he offers an economic playstyle that will favour both a scientific and a domination victory in the iconic 4X game.

Kublai Khan's special ability is called 'Gerege', and it provides one extra economic policy slot for any and every government you run. It also grants a random eureka and inspiration when you establish a trading post in another civilization's city for the first time.

Depending on which civilisation you decide to lead, this ability will lend itself to quite different strategies. The Chinese civ's ability will provide an extra 10% of the science and culture costs for researching techs or civics for every eureka and inspiration. Since Kublai Khan's ability provides more of both of these, your science and culture game will be strong.

January 28, 2021 The Civ 6 Vietnam and Kublai Khan pack is out now on Steam and the Epic Games Store.

We've also since learned details regarding how the new Vietnam civilisation will work, as well Kublai Khan's leader abilities.

Original Story: We're now approaching the end of the Civilization VI New Frontier Pass run of micro-expansions, and details regarding the fifth pack have just dropped. Releasing next week, the premier 4X game's new pack will be adding to the roster of Civ 6 civilisations with Vietnam, and existing civilisations China and Mongolia will be able to make use of a new leader, Kublai Khan.

In addition, this pack will also introduce a new game mode that focuses on economic power and living out your secret fantasies about being a business mogul with a silly moustache and lots of money. The 'Monopolies and Corporations' mode will, among other things, let you build up industries around specific luxury resources. Before now, only the Catherine de Medici alternate persona was able to get any kind of bonus from developing more than one tile of the same luxury resource.
