The best Civ 6 Leader for each victory type

Looking for a list of the best Civ 6 leaders? Sid Meier's Civilization VI is the latest in the beloved series of turn-based strategy games. For those new to the series, the premise is as follows: assume the position of a notorious historical leader, and carry your people all the way from the early days of man to world domination with your strategy, diplomacy, and occasionally, large battering ram. You'll be up against a motley crew of other nations vying for space and resources on the map, and your job is to meet the victory conditions for one of the victory types before one of your rivals does.

Before you challenge your friends to a weekend-long Civ-athon, or decide to test your mettle against the AI in singleplayer, we'd recommend getting to grips with every type of victory available, and trying them out so you know how to secure them - or how to prevent them. To that end, we've made you a guide to the best Civ 6 leaders for each victory type.

What are the victory types in Civ 6? You can go for one of the following: Science, Culture, Diplomacy, Religion, Domination, and Score. Basically: become king of space (Science), make everyone think you're the coolest (Culture), make everyone think you're the most sensible (Diplomacy), make everybody worship you (Religion), make everybody else dead (Domination), or make everybody else give up because it's 3 am and they just want to go to bed (Score). Here are the best Civs with which to secure each victory, excluding Score, which is won by whoever has the highest score by 2050 AD. We've chosen them based on how well they perform in the standard Civilization 6 game mode - no comets raining down from the sky or vampires scuttling around from the Apocalypse or Secret Societies modes, thank you very much.

Civ 6 game speed, map types and difficulty settings explained

Want to know more about Civ 6 game speed, the various map types, and difficulty settings? The latest game in Sid Meier's acclaimed 4X series, Civilization 6 has grown into a blockbuster hit since release. The game builds on mechanics you'll be familiar with from previous iterations - yes, the goal is still to spread your influence and/or giant death robots across the map to achieve victory, but Civ 6 has introduced additional mechanics to consider, like district adjacency bonuses, a civics tree, and different government types.

When you boot up the game and prepare to embark upon a journey of ruthless expansion, you'll be met with a series of options - this is where you can customise the challenge you'll take on. There are all types of settings to tinker with, and while the default settings are a great place to start, you can significantly alter your gameplay experience with a couple of tweaks. Given the extensive time commitment of your average Civ game, you'll want to pay careful attention to what kind of operation you're signing yourself up for.

So, whether you're looking for a 1v1 showdown across a gigantic ocean (some people really love boats, and that's okay) or would rather cram a bunch of big egos onto a single island and watch the carnage unfold, here's your handy guide to all of Civ 6's game settings.

The Best Civilisations in Civilization 6

With a new Civilization games comes new civilisations, and so we must learn their eccentricities and best playstyles all over again. In order to help our readers get better at the game and figure out the best way to achieve their chosen route to victory, we've put together this guide that showcases some 'best in style' civilisations for various victory types.

Due to the way Civilization VI was designed you no longer have the highly specific niche focuses of the previous game. Most civs still tend to favour one area over others, although it's more focused on victory conditions.

Who are the best Civilizations and Leaders in Civilization 6?
  • Tomyris of Scythia (Domination)
  • Teddy Roosevelt of America (Domination)
  • ...

Civ 6 Domination Victory

A classic route, Domination sees you conquering the world by strength of arms over your less fortunate civilisations. In Civ VI, you fortunately don't need to conquer an entire civilisation; you just need to control all of the capitals to score the victory. As military might walks alongside a healthy economy and scientific progress, you also need to pay attention to those instead of just spamming military units.

Civilization VI is having a free weekend on Steam

If you've been pondering a dive into Civilization VI, now's your chance, as the strategy game is now having a free weekend on Steam. Between now and July 27, you can sample the sixth entry in the Sid Meier's classic series, from developer Firaxis Games, before potentially buying the full version at a heavy discount.

The free weekend coincides with the launch of the Ethiopia Pack, the latest content rollout in the 4X game's season pass. It brings the Ethiopia civilization, new leader Menelik II, a new district for diplomacy, and a new game mode, Secret Societies, that throws eldritch cultists and vampires, among other slightly off-putting additions, into the mix.

Civilization VI first launched back in 2016, bringing fresh perspective to a reliable formula. The object of the game is the same as always - grow your civilization from meager beginnings to a world superpower, working towards one of several specific goals to achieve victory. In the four years since release, Civ VI has gotten two major expansions, a battle royale mode (that's now narrated by Sean Bean), the aforementioned season pass, and a growing number of mods, if the content from Firaxis isn't exciting enough.
