This US teacher uses Humankind and Civilization to teach world history

Civilization and Humankind are great historical strategy games, but can you imagine getting to play them as part of an official class? High school students at a school in Maine in the US don't have to wonder, as these two 4X games are being used by their teacher for a class on world history.

Ryan Botting doesn't completely let his students play games all day, but the flexibility offered by his state's education system means he's able to fold these games into his syllabus. "I use Civilization and Humankind in my classroom similar to how a teacher might use a normal activity in the classroom: to have students engage in the material we go over in the class and get them excited about learning," Botting tells us.

"In the normal classroom we go over the primary theme of each era. Then, in the gaming portion they play a giant multiplayer game where they are given objectives of things their civilisation (or precursor civilisation) actually did in history. When students complete their objectives we go over them in class, using the real-life events as a case study to examine the primary theme of the era."

This endgame replay mod for Civilization 6 looks really cool

The only thing better than having a great run in 4X game Civilization VI is being reminded of how great it was through a replay. The 'Endgame Map Replay' mod by Technoluddite does exactly what it says on the tin. It plays out the just-finished match on an abstracted hex map which looks similar to one of the map modes you can activate in-game.

Firaxis' popular strategy game does already provide endgame stats that you can look at to see how well you did, but this Civ 6 mod offers a more in-depth alternative. It doesn't replace the existing endgame screen, rather it adds a new tab. "When selected this displays a map of the world," the mod page explains, "initially showing it as it was at the beginning of the game."

Using playback tools that also come with the mod, you can then watch the match (and map) unfold from the player civ's perspective. It shows when new cities and infrastructure get placed, territory gains and losses, and even the spread of religion. There are also additional options and configurable settings you can play around with as well.

Conquer Pokémon's Sinnoh region with this Civilization 6 map mod

While we all wait to find out what Firaxis has decided to do next with Civilization VI, players are finding their own fun through the wonderful world of Civ 6 mods. Some mods have brought new life to the 4X game's stale oceans, while others let you summon XCOM's aliens to help you conquer the map. This map mod lets you conquer Pokémon's Sinnoh region.

This mod was created by user Skylar Saphyr to celebrate the upcoming release of Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, remakes of the original Pokémon Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum games, which are set in the Sinnoh region, and launched the fourth generation of Pokémon.

This huge 86x80 map manages to recreate everything from the snowy north to the massive mountain range that splits the region down the centre, along with all of the major forests and lakes. Minor rivers are still procedurally generated by Civ 6's world generator, so no two games will be exactly alike, and there are plenty of easter eggs to discover as well.
