The best civilisations in Civilization 6

In order to help our readers get better at Civilization VI, we've put together a guide that looks at at which Civ 6 civilisations are best at which victory type. We don't list every Civ 6 civ, but we've showcased some 'best in style' civilisations for various end game strategies. This is based on the same principle as the best Civ 5 civs guide we also have.

Due to the way Civilization VI was designed you no longer have the highly specific, focused civs of the previous game. Most still tend to favour one area over others, but this time around - with one or two exceptions - each faction is focused on one, maybe two of the core victory conditions in the game, allowing for some flexibility in how you play them.

This guide includes civilisations from the base game, as well as interesting new additions from the various Civ 6 DLC options that have been released to date, including the New Frontier Pass. We'll keep this guide updated with new interesting picks as more content is released.

Here's everything you need to know about Civilization 6's Pirates

Oct 22, 2020 The new Pirate mode is now live, you can read more here.

The free Civilization 6 October 2020 update is due to launch later this week, and the biggest addition is the new pirates scenario. The devs offered a quick glimpse at the new mode in the debut video for the upcoming patch, but a new video shines a brighter light on what we can expect from the scenario.

The 60-turn multiplayer scenario puts you in control of one of four pirate factions - Dread Pirates, Privateers, Swashbucklers, and Hoarders - each with its own active ability and passive ability. Victory is achieved by having the highest score when the scenario comes to a close.

The Dread Pirates' Walk the Plank active will immediately sink a damaged enemy ship, while inspiring your own ship with increased movement and combat strength. The Fightin' Is What We Do Best passive will give you extra gold every time a unit enters combat. Privateers have the Bring Her Home active, which will capture an enemy for your patron in exchange for gold and infamy. Letter of Marque will reveal all the ports of your patron, and will give you extra gold for pillaging along the trade routes.

Sid Meier's Civilization 6 becomes Sid Meier's Pirates! in the October update

Oct 22, 2020 The update is now live. Here are the patch notes.

The Civilization 6 October 2020 update is due to launch on Thursday, October 22, and the devs have provided a look at what to expect from the new content. The new game mode this time around brings back a taste of a different set of classic Sid Meier strategy games in the form of a pirates scenario.

The pirates scenario is a new mode for one to four players, which challenges you to find riches on the high seas with one of four factions, each with unique active and passive abilities: the Dread Pirates, Privateers, Swashbucklers, or Hoarders. British, Spanish, French, and Dutch AI factions will try to take you down along the way. The scenario has new art to give it a tropical feel, and you can play on either a handmade map or a procedurally-generated one.

The mode was directly inspired by Sid Meier's Pirates!, associate producer Kevin Schultz explains in the dev video. "But Sid Meier's Civilization is a very different style of game from Sid Meier's Pirates! Retooling the established rules of Civ 6 to work in this unique setting was an interesting challenge. Luckily, some elements could be adapted to fit really well with Civilization 6's established gameplay. For example, the relic system."
