Ambiorix leads Gaul in the new Civilization 6 DLC - here's what he can do

Civilization 6's next Frontier Pass DLC pack launches this week with the new Byzantium and Gaul civs. After previewing Byzantium's Basil II leader a few days ago, Firaxis has lifted the veil on Gaul's leader, Ambiorix, who historically led the Eburone tribe of Gallia Belgica against Caesar's occupation in 54 BCE.

Gaul's unique ability is Hallstatt Culture, which makes mines provide an adjacency bonus for all districts, a culture bonus, and culture bomb unowned territory. The downside is that specialty districts can no longer be built next to your city centre, and they can't get adjacency bonuses from other districts. Ambiorix's King of the Eburones ability grants you bonus culture based on the unit cost of each non-civilian you train, and gives melee, anti-cavalry, and ranged units a combat strength bonus for every fellow combat unit that's adjacent.

The Gaesatae replaces the warrior as Gaul's unique unit - more expensive, but it gets a combat strength bonus against stronger units and district defenses. The unique Oppidum district is cheaper and available earlier than the industrial zone it replaces, has its own ranged attack, gets extra adjacency bonuses from quarries and strategic resources, and gets you instant access to the apprenticeship technology when you construct it.

Civilization VI - First Look: Ambiorix Leads Gaul

Ambiorix was the co-ruler of the Eburone tribe of Gallia Belgica (north-eastern Gaul, modern-day Belgium) who led an insurrection against Caesar’s occupying forces in the winter of 54/53 BCE. Although his real name has been lost to history, he remains well-known by his title, “Ambiorix,” which means “The King in All Directions.”

Ambiorix’s “King of the Eburones” ability allows his civilization to gain additional Culture based on unit cost when a non-civilian is trained. Melee, anti-cavalry, and ranged units also receive bonus Combat Strength for every adjacent combat unit.
Unique Gaul Ability - Hallstatt Culture
Mines provide minor adjacent bonuses for all districts, a Culture bomb of unowned territory, and receive bonus Culture. Specialty districts do not receive a minor adjacency for being adjacent to another district and these districts cannot be built adjacent to the City Center.
Unique Unit - The Gaesatae
Ambiorix’’s elite units are more expensive to train, but receive additional Combat Strength when fighting stronger units and district defenses.
Unique District - The Oppidum
This district is cheaper and available earlier than the Industrial Zone and unlocks the Apprenticeship technology when constructed. It is defensible, offering its own ranged attack, and receives a major adjacency bonus from Quarries and strategic resources.

Here's your first look at new Civilization 6 leader Basil II of Byzantium

Hot on the heels of news that Civilization 6 gets Byzantium and Gaul in its Frontier Pass next week, developer Firaxis Games has unveiled one of the strategy game's incoming leaders: Basil II of Byzantium. He's described as a "distinguished general and administrator", who "reduced the power of the aristocracy, filled the empire's treasury, and expanded its borders". And, along with the Frontier Pass, he lands on September 24.

In the 'first look' video of Civ VI's new Byzantium leader - included below - the developer explains Basil II's unique ability is called 'taxis' - an option that grants the leader's units "additional combat or religious strength for each holy city converted to Byzantium's religion". Besting enemies helps spread the civ's religion, and cities that boast holy sites gain bonus great prophet points.

The leader also has a 'Porphyrogénnētos' ability, which lets Basil II's light and heavy cavalry units deal full damage against cities that follow the same religion as the civ. Oh, and "gains the Tagma unique unit when the Divine Right civic is discovered" - this unique unit being a replacement for the Knight, which lavishes extra combat or religious strength on "nearby land units". Neat.

Civilization VI - First Look: Basil II Leads Byzantium

Basil II (aka Basilius II) was the emperor of the Byzantine Empire from 976 to 1025 CE. He is remembered for conquering ancient Bulgaria, where he became known as the Bulgar-Slayer (Bulgaroktonos). Basil II's reign is one of the most significant in Byzantine history due to his constant military campaigns; these exploits led to the zenith of Byzantine power in the Middle Ages. The restoration of the Danubian frontier helped establish a more stable and secure border for the empire in Europe, maintaining a stronger frontier against Hungarian and Pecheneg raiders.

Basil II’s “Porphyrogénnētos” ability allows Heavy and Light Cavalry units to do full damage against cities following the same religion as Byzantium. Basil II also gains the Tagma unique unit when the Divine Right civic is discovered.
Unique Units - The Dromon and the Tagma
The Dromon replaces the Quadrireme, has additional range, and receives additional Combat Strength against units. The Tagma replaces the Knight and grants nearby land units additional Combat Strength or Religious Strength.
Unique District - The Hippodrome
This district replaces the Entertainment Complex district, is cheaper to build, and provides additional Amenities. Grants a Heavy Cavalry unit when the Hippodrome and its buildings are constructed.

Civilization 6 gets Byzantium and Gaul in its Frontier Pass next week

Firaxis Games has revealed that more content is coming to Civilization 6 next week. The strategy game's third DLC pack centres on Byzantium and Gaul, and will be available to download September 24 on Steam as part of the New Frontier Pass, but can be bought as a standalone purchase if you'd prefer.

The Byzantium and Gaul Pack features two new leaders and civilisations - no prizes for guessing which they are - alongside two new World Wonders and a new map script called The Highlands. The new DLC also includes a new optional game mode called Dramatic Ages that enters civilisations into the Golden or Dark Ages and comes with more potent bonuses and penalties.

To name a few, in place of Dedications, you'll find new social policies like golden policies and updated dark policies that offer greater flexibility and power. Cool. The Dark Ages are looking more dangerous than ever, too, as a portion of your empire immediately falls into free cities that are open to pressure from other free cities. Do keep in mind, though, that you'll need the Rise and Fall or Gathering Storm expansion to play the new game mode.
