Going Hands-On With Of Ash And Steel—Twisted Metal

I was immediately intrigued by Of Ash and Steel when I saw it, specifically because of how ambitious it looked for an indie project. For what appears to be the first game by developer Fire & Frost, its size and scope as an action RPG seemed pretty impressive, and I’m always on board with indie studios punching above their weight if they can manage it.

Getting to go hands-on with Of Ash and Steel was a bit of a conflicting experience. There’s a lot I want to like about it—heck, there’s a lot TO like about it. But it’s also pretty clear it may need a few more months in the oven to fully cook. Fire & Frost supposedly were inspired to make RPGs that captured the style and feel of 2000s-era RPGs, and I would definitely say Of Ash and Steel is giving me those vibes—for better and worse.

New World Overview Trailer & Playtest Sign-Up

Greetings, adventurers!

Our game was just featured at tinyBuild Connect 2025 with a brand-new trailer showcasing the beautiful and dangerous world of Of Ash and Steel.

We invite you to hear from Tristan, a cartographer by trade and our hero by chance, as he guides you through the island of Grayshaft, its ecosystem, climate, and inhabitants (some more welcoming than others).

Starting today, you can also sign up for the upcoming closed playtest to experience the first few quests and the beginning of Tristan's journey. This is the first time we have let someone outside of the development team, our friends and family, and the publisher step foot onto Grayshaft! We will share more details on what to expect from this playtest in the coming days.
Welcome to Grayshaft
Grayshaft is one of the islands of the Kingdom of the Seven. This island is beautiful, that much is certain: peaceful meadows stretch alongside endless crop fields, while small creeks wind their way through quiet hills and past sleepy villages. But thick, ancient forests soon take over the horizon, shrouding crumbling ruins and long-forgotten relics.

Some folks describe the island as an entity, temperamental and unstable whenever it decides so. The weather turns on a whim, with a gentle breeze becoming a violent storm in moments. While some parts of the island bloom with color and life, others are locked in a frozen grip all year round. Even the ancient volcano at the heart of this area can’t warm up the lands it overlooks.
Dangers in Every Step
Danger is never far behind. Whether wandering well-worn roads or exploring hidden paths, you’ll face bloodthirsty beasts, ruthless scavengers, and monstrous creatures. Heck, the bugs alone are the stuff of nightmares! Make one wrong move, and it could be your last.

But for those who press on, curiosity and courage are rewarded: hidden caves, buried treasures, and long-lost secrets await those brave enough to look where others didn’t dare to. Just look over your shoulder while exploring, or you might become another lost soul of the island.
Factions and Power Struggles
Wildlife, bandits and monsters are not the only dangerous entities on the island: Grayshaft is also home to factions, some of which are vying for control and power. The Order of the Seven stands tall with their code and discipline, while the Free Hunters answer to no one but their own sense of justice. Many more groups operate in the shadows or on the fringes of society, and you’ll never know who to trust at first glance. Rule of thumb: assume everything’s out to get you, and you’ll only be surprised when it’s not.

That’s all for today!
We’re thrilled to begin unveiling the world of Of Ash and Steel to everyone, and this is just the beginning. Wishlist the game and stay tuned: more reveals and devlogs are coming soon.
