Including both the 170/5 and 170/6 subclasses, with detail changes such as original headlights, updated cabs and interiors, the Class 170 is now presented in West Midlands Railway livery, as well as the far-reaching CrossCountry livery![/p][p][/p][p]Read the full WMR / XC Class 170 Coming Soon Article for more information.[/p][p][/p][p]Find out more about Train Sim World 5 by following @trainsimworld on Twitter/X, Bluesky, Instagram, Threads, Facebook, YouTube, Twitch, and TikTok.[/p]

WMR / XC Class 170 – Coming Soon!

[p]We snuck this one out in our July Roadmap, where we gave a brief overview of the two liveries with a selection of screenshots.[/p]
The DMU: Class 170
[p]The Class 170 has been a recognisable part of UK regional and longer-distance services for the past 25 years and continues to be a staple for connecting towns and cities that do not feature wholly electrified railways. Across multiple variants and fleet shuffles, they have taken on many roles and paint schemes over the past few decades.[/p][p][/p][p][/p][p]Originally part of Rivet Games’ Fife Circle Line as the ScotRail Class 170/4, the iconic turbo now stars in a new role, filling out and enhancing the Cross-City Line. Including both the 170/5 and 170/6 subclasses, with detail changes such as original headlights, updated cabs and interiors, the Class 170 is now presented in West Midlands Railway livery, as well as the far-reaching CrossCountry livery![/p][p][/p][p]This marks the arrival of the CrossCountry license in Train Sim World, along with the second train to feature the orange West Midlands Railways branding, after the Class 323. Previously CrossCountry featured in Train Simulator Classic content.[/p][p][/p][p]The passenger interiors and the cabs differ per Train Operating Company (TOC). CrossCountry for example features First Class accommodation, but the West Midlands Railway 170 does not, also note the remnants of London Midland with the unmistakable green moquette.[/p][p]If you’re new to the Class 170 in Train Sim World, Rivet Games produced a video detailing the development of the ScotRail Class 170 when Fife Circle Line released.[/p][p]Unlike the Fife Circle Line Class 170, the WMR & CrossCountry trains do not include the Auto-Announce feature. Due to this being a bespoke set-up that Rivet Games have developed, this implementation would have required fundamental changes to the way the route works, which is something we weren't able to support for this particular Add-on.[/p][p][/p]
New Timetable & Gameplay

Plus additional traffic at Birmingham New Street
[p][/p][p]A new timetable will be available to players of the Birmingham Cross-City route, featuring a much wider variety of traffic from a selection of other Add-ons, for players that own them. There’ll also be new Scenarios to play.[/p][p]The West Midlands Railway Class 170 will have over 150 services, of which 58 are playable. The CrossCountry Class 170 will have over 180, of which 31 will be playable.[/p][p]Tyler, a Game Designer at Rivet Games, takes us through the process of building this timetable from the Class 170 Add-on and outlines the content available from other Train Sim World Add-ons.[/p]
Rivet Games Timetable Deep Dive
[p][/p][p]The new Cross-City timetable started as a passion project. A year ago, I was a modder making timetables in the Public Editor, wishing for an update to Birmingham Cross-City. I approached Rivet Games with a project proposal: they'd modify their existing Class 170 into variants suitable for the route, and I'd create the timetable. They said yes, but it wouldn't be for a little while, so in the meantime would I like to come work on other projects? I am now happily employed at Rivet Games and am excited to see this project released for Train Sim World 5 players to enjoy.[/p]
Base timetable
[p][/p][p]The first decision of the project was easy: Instead of starting from scratch, I'd start by making a copy of the existing timetable, set in 2019, and add trains using the same Working Timetable source document.[/p][p]The Class 323 services are mostly unchanged, save for some signalling changes at the now-very-busy Birmingham New Street. Freight, rail tour, and Railhead Treatment Train layers are unchanged.[/p]
Class 170s galore
[p][/p][p]The new timetable includes Class 170s from both West Midlands Railway and CrossCountry, in both 2-car 170/5 and 3-car 170/6 variants. You'll also drive 4-car trains composed of a pair of 2-car units, and I challenge you to find the two trains longer than 4 cars hidden in the timetable.[/p][p]The majority of playable Class 170 services are between Bromsgrove and Birmingham New Street. CrossCountry services operate out of the playable area between Cardiff and Nottingham and West Midlands Railway runs between Birmingham and Hereford, Great Malvern & Worcester. This busy trunk line will keep you on your toes responding to yellow and red signals; keep to time and you'll often overtake the stopping Class 323 services on the four-track section between Kings Norton and Longbridge.[/p][p][/p][p]Eagle-eyed players may spot that real CrossCountry services don't stop at Bromsgrove; in TSW they do, just for you! Otherwise, they'd be AI-only services, playable only on the short stretch between Birmingham New Street and University.[/p][p][/p][p]West Midlands Railway Class 170s are also playable between Aston and Birmingham New Street on services running out of the map to Walsall and Wolverhampton or Shrewsbury. Another reason to pick the May 2019 timetable as the base timetable was the short-lived use of Class 170 units on this service.[/p][p][/p][p]Rounding out the playable Class 170 services are a couple of empty coaching stock movements giving you some rare mileage, but that's not all the 170s! AI services from both operators fill out Birmingham New Street, headed beyond the route’s confines for Shrewsbury, Nottingham, Leicester, and Stansted Airport.[/p]
Lots of additional service layers!
[p][/p][p]If you own other Train Sim World Add-ons, you'll get extra playable and AI content — so much so that we had to write our own platform visualization tool to cram all the traffic into Birmingham New Street.[/p][p]The Class 350 from West Coast Main Line (London Euston - Milton Keynes) is playable between Birmingham New Street and Aston on Walsall and Wolverhampton services (as well as some other service patterns at peak hours, check the platform boards for more information).[/p][p][/p][p]The Class 350 and the Avanti West Coast Class 390 Pendolino both fill out Birmingham New Street as AI, and you'll also spot them at the low-level platforms at Lichfield Trent Valley. The Pendolino also has a single empty coaching stock move playable between Aston and Birmingham New Street.[/p][p]The last visitor to Birmingham New Street is the Transport for Wales Class 150 from Cardiff City Network on services between Birmingham International and destinations in Wales.[/p][p]Finally, if you drive through Aston (or stand on the platforms to spot trains) you may see some AI freight trains using existing layers.[/p]
What to see, what to do
[p][/p][p]To close things off, I'll finish by sharing two personal highlights from the new timetable:[/p][p]Driving between Birmingham New Street and Bromsgrove is more engaging than ever, no matter your choice of traction. There are lots of adverse signals and the fast overtakes are fun — certainly contenders for the Awesome Service Mode Runs thread on the TSW forums.[/p][p]Trainspotting on foot on the route is another way to enjoy the traffic. At Birmingham New Street, find the glass-walled stair towers at the west end of the platforms for an elevated view of trains arriving and departing. Go downstairs at Lichfield Trent Valley and watch those 390s bank around the curves at speed. Hang out with the cat at Aston and try to guess which type of train will arrive next. Or stand at Longbridge and try to capture an overtake in Photo Mode.[/p][p]We hope you enjoy driving the Class 170 in this new timetable as much as we enjoyed creating it![/p]
Pricing and Preview Live Stream
[p]Train Sim World 5: West Midlands Railway & CrossCountry BR Class 170 DMU will release on 29th July for Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Epic Games Store, and Steam for £12.99/€15.99/$16.99[/p][p]Want to see the Class 170 and new timetable in action? You can join Harry, Matt and Jasper from the Rivet Games team in our RFTV Preview Stream on Thursday 24th July at 1900 UTC over on YouTube and Twitch.[/p]
The Route: Birmingham Cross-City
[p][/p][p]This Class 170 Add-on layers into the Birmingham Cross-City route Add-on, which first released for Train Sim World 3. It is available for Train Sim World 5 as Compatible Content.[/p][p]Master the West Midlands from England’s second city through to Bromsgrove and Redditch in Worcestershire and to the cathedral city of Lichfield. The route features the famously steep Lickey Incline and the expansive platforms and trackwork of Birmingham New Street Station. Included is the WMR Class 323 EMU, which has been updated for TSW5 players to include a busy and engaging Conductor Mode![/p][p][/p][p]Available separately from SimTrack Studios is the Centro Regional Railway Class 323 Add-on, bringing additional Scenarios to the route and the appearance of the unique 323 221 in the timetable.[/p][p]Find out more about Train Sim World 5 by following @trainsimworld on Twitter/X, Bluesky, Instagram, Threads, Facebook, YouTube, Twitch, and TikTok.[/p]

Class 86 Loco - Out Now!

[p][/p][previewyoutube][/previewyoutube][p]Blast to the past along the WCML with classic British AC traction in the iconic BR Class 86/2 from Just Trains.[/p][p][/p][p]BR Class 86/2[/p][p][/p][p][/p][p][/p][p]This Add-on brings additional challenges to the stunning WCML: Preston - Carlisle route, as well as all-new variety in the form of British Rail’s Mk2F coaches.[/p][p][/p][p]The Class 86 entered service in the mid-1960s after years of testing different designs to run on the newly electrified West Coast Main Line.[/p][p][/p][p][/p][p][/p][p]Over time, a revision to the suspension was undertaken to solve issues of rough riding and track wear, these changes resulted in what became known as the Class 86/2 subclass.[/p][p][/p][p]In more recent years, both the Class 87 and Class 86 have seen some international service in Europe, predominantly in Bulgaria, where some are still used on freight trains under various operators. Players can utilise Free Roam to take these locomotives beyond their home tracks or on UK rail tours on other British TSW routes.[/p][p][/p][p][/p][p][/p][p]Operating the Class 86 in-game will be a challenge for new and existing players on WCML Preston – Carlisle. Just Trains have produced a Class 86 Manual to outline specific changes and operations.[/p][p][/p][p][/p][p][/p][p]The Class 86 has a fully accessible engine room and a detailed, weathered cab. It also comes in two liveries: BR Blue and Intercity Executive with specific details implemented on individual locomotives, such as those on ‘City of Coventry’ detailed in the March Roadmap.[/p][p][/p][p]Mk2F Coaches & Mk1 RMB[/p][p][/p][p][/p][p][/p][p]Also included in the pack are Mk2F Coaches, in BSO, TSO and FO variants.[/p][p][/p][p][/p][p][/p][p]The feature coach of the Class 86/2 is the much-requested BR Mk1 RMB Buffet Car.[/p][p][/p][p][/p][p][/p][p]When you enter the RMB, make your way to the Buffet area where behind the operating roller shutter you will see a fully stocked area with a great variety of top-quality (curly) sandwiches, fresh (yesterday) Pork Pies (in two sizes), bags of crisps, bottles of soft drinks with flavours such as Apple, Orange, and Berry![/p][p]All these are ready for your delectation served to you by the friendly and helpful Steward.[/p][p][/p][p]Timetable services and additional gameplay[/p][p][/p][p][/p][p][/p][p]Both the Class 86 and Mk2 Coaches will substitute into the current WCML: Preston – Carlisle timetable in place of some Class 87-hauled services.[/p][p][/p][p]The timetable for WCML: Preston – Carlisle has Class 87 services running cross-country trains across the route. These services will be substituted by Class 86 locomotives as would have been the case during the period.[/p][p][/p][p]As the Class 86/2 was not a common feature on freight services, these will all continue to be Class 87 hauled.[/p][p][/p][p][/p][p][/p][p]5 new Scenarios will also be available to play on the route, ranging from a football Special out of the map to a run to Wembley to represent England playing against Scotland during April 1986.[/p][p][/p][p]Others including a delayed service requires some rerouting and the southbound express bound for London requires some assistance... can you take on the challenge?[/p][p][/p][p][/p][p][/p][p]Players keen on making use of the Mk1 RMB will be able to do so in Formation Designer, along with the Mk2F Coaches and the Class 86 with these coaches can be spawned in Free Roam.[/p][p][/p][p]Train Sim World 5: Class 86/2 & Mk2F Coaches is out now for Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Epic Games Store, and Steam for £19.99 / €24.99 / $24.99.[/p][p][/p][p]You can learn more in Just Trains' Development Blog entries[/p][p][/p][p][/p][previewyoutube][/previewyoutube][p][/p][p]If you missed the preview streams, you can go back and watch both the Just Trains Preview and the Railfan TV preview.[/p][p][/p][p]West Coast Main Line: Preston – Carlisle[/p][p][/p][p][/p][previewyoutube][/previewyoutube][p][/p][p]Just Trains’ latest route for Train Sim World is the longest UK route ever developed! Thrash both the electric Class 87 and diesel Class 47 up Shap Summit across almost 100 miles of northwest tracks between Preston and Carlisle.[/p][p][/p][p]Class 101 DMU and Class 08 shunting services are also included, with layered services and AI featuring for players with Just Trains’ other route Add-on: Blackpool Branches and other Train Sim World Add-ons like Flying Scotsman and Northern Trans-Pennine.[/p][p][/p][p]The WCML: Preston - Carlisle route also unlocks additional Class 87 rail tour services for the recently released Manchester Airport Commuter route Add-on.[/p][p][/p][p]Xbox players with Game Pass Ultimate can also get 10% off selected Add-ons.[/p][p][/p][p]Additional Class 87 liveries[/p][p][/p][p][/p][p]Players with WCML: Preston – Carlisle also received some additional liveries as part of a recent patch update. You can read the full details for this route and others in the Patch Notes.[/p][p][/p][p]The additional liveries include two variations of the existing intercity executive, one with red buffers and one which is heavily weathered as well as another two variations with an extended yellow panel at the front with black and red buffers and finally one variation with a full yellow front with black numbers and decals.[/p][p][/p][p]The Class 86 loco Add-on is not required in order to receive these additional Class 87 liveries.[/p][p]Find out more about Train Sim World 5 by following @trainsimworld on Twitter/X, Bluesky, Instagram, Threads, Facebook, YouTube, Twitch, and TikTok.[/p]

Why don't we take a quick look at what's still to come this month, starting with a brand new add-on announcement![/p][p][/p]
Partner Programme
[p]Announcing a new twin-set of Turbos from Rivet Games[/p][p]We have one last reveal coming to Train Sim World 5... Rivet Games have been busy working on expanding the gameplay of the Cross-City Line, and the star of the show is the upcoming WMR & XC BR Class 170! James spent some time with the pack to bring you the news:
[/p][p]The Class 170 makes its second appearance in Train Sim World, sporting new liveries, modifications (including the old AdTranz headlight clusters) and for the first time, the CrossCountry brand to Train Sim World - a license we are delighted to have back since its last appearance in TS Classic![/p][p][/p][p]The passenger interiors and the cabs differ per Train Operating Company (TOC), CrossCountry for example features First Class accommodation, but the West Midlands Railway 170 does not, also note the remnants of London Midland with the unmistakable green moquette.[/p][p][/p][p]Diesel and electric cross paths just outside of Bromsgrove, at the base of the Lickey Incline. The pair of 323s will later fly up the famed hill with ease, the 170 however is about to slog it at less than 40mph![/p][p]Winter snow settles on the trackbed as 170520 slows for University station, the only intermediate station between Birmingham and Bromsgrove which both the CrossCountry and WMR diesel services call at.[/p][p][/p][p]On a CrossCountry service bound for Nottingham, 170638 shoots past an accelerating 323 at Northfield station, making use of the central, unelectrified lines. The southern half of the route gets a new lease of life![/p][p]Busy busy Birmingham, whether it's Desiros for Wolverhampton or Pendolinos racing to Crewe, AI trains bound for all directions can now be seen, making it feel just as busy as it should be, with Transport for Wales AI also making a presence here.[/p][p]For a bit of bitesize Birmingham flavour, the 170 (in conjunction with the Class 350 as a layer) also provides additional playable services between New Street and Aston. A short but sweet treat if one doesn't have the appetite for blasting via Bournville.[/p][p]The northern tip of the route is not left out of the action - alongside all the Class 170 and Birmingham New Street layers, you can also enjoy a bit of Trent Valley trainspotting! Keep an eye out below the 323's high-level platform at Lichfield for fast and stopper services alike.[/p][p]The WMR & XC BR Class 170 DMU joins the West Midlands line-up soon, and you can expect this add-on to come ahead of the Dovetail Direct on August 26th. We will share more news and details in the coming weeks, but in the meantime, you have a couple days left to pick up WCML South & the Avanti West Coast Pendolino in the Steam Summer Sale if you haven't already to prepare Birmingham for its additional traffic![/p][p][/p][p]Class 86 + Mk2f Coaches from Just Trains - Arriving on July 15th![/p][p]Just Trains' first locomotive Add-on is releasing this time next week - Get ready to hop aboard the Class 86 from the release on July 15th 2025![/p][p][/p][p]This classic electric locomotive brings additional gameplay to the longest UK route in Train Sim World: West Coast Main Line: Preston - Carlisle, introduces new Mk2F coaches and also the highly-requested Mk1 RMB, or "Restaurant Miniature Buffet", which is staffed![/p][p]

[/p][p]The expanded timetable will change/add the following:[/p]
 • [p]Reworked freight layers[/p]
 • [p]ICE trains and formations have been swapped around to better represent the 2018 timetable, including the addition of an ICE-T layer[/p]

 • [p]Voice-over lines[/p]
 • [p]Befehl documents on the cab desk[/p]
[p][/p][p]We'll be sharing much more details about what you can expect in these new scenarios in future articles, but for now stay excited and prepare yourself to expect the unexpected![/p][p][/p]
Add-on Timeline Summary
[p]Now that we've covered the remaining add-ons coming to Train Sim World 5, we wanted to confirm where you can expect all our previously announced add-ons listed on the roadmap to land.[/p][p]You should be able to see this outlined on our July 2025 roadmap asset above, but to make it clear again:[/p][p][/p][p]Add-ons Still to Come in Train Sim World 5[/p]
 • [p] Add-on  Class 86 + Mk2f Coaches from Just Trains[/p]
