Octopath Traveler 0 is here, and it is a game that took me wholly by surprise for the sheer amount of content this once mobile-game-turned full-fat JRPG delivers.

Square Enix has smartly taken its 2020 mobile game release (in Japan) of Octopath Traveler: Champions of the Continent and has eloquently transformed it into a standalone JRPG experience that can stand proudly next to the first two numbered entries into the beloved 2D-HD series.

Octopath Traveler 0 is the perfect jumping-off point for new players, and it offers enough content for returning travellers to feel at home while still setting them on a new, expansive adventure. Octopath Traveler 0 opens with the player character’s hometown of Wishvale falling to the tyrannical forces of corrupt individuals, each of whom shares a twisted desire for power, fame and wealth.

OCTOPATH TRAVELER 0 was an appointment at PAX West 2025 that I thought would have me completely out of my element—I don’t usually mesh well with turn-based combat—but instead I walked away a fan of the game and fully intend to jump into OCTOPATH TRAVELER II when I get home. I think OCTOPATH TRAVELER 0 is a great entry point for new players, with so much content that veteran players will be satisfied.

To address the elephant in the room, OCTOPATH TRAVELER 0 is not just a port of a mobile game. You won’t be faced with a gacha system, awkward controls or microtransactions. Square Enix has completely reworked Octopath Traveler: Champions of the Continent to make the game fun and functional for gameplay on Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S and PC.
