#5 Dev Diary | Sanity System

Hi Survivors!❄️

In this Dev Diary, we’re going to tell you more about the Sanity System, another important gameplay element. We will also share the latest features and improvements our team has been working on

❗ Please keep in mind that the game is still in progress, so it may not reflect the final version. The graphics and gifs we’re showing today represent the current state of the game.❗
Sanity 🧘🏻
Being stranded in the ice wilderness, you must do whatever it takes to survive. You can rely on your own wits and limited resources to withstand these harsh conditions. But remember: survival isn’t just about staying alive, it’s also about staying sane.

This may raise the question: How do you keep your humanity? In Frost Survival VR, you must take care of not only your physiological needs—such as hunger, thirst, and keeping yourself warm—but also your mental health.

The level of sanity determines how the player perceives the world around them. The lower the level of sanity, the more delusions the player can see and hear. It's worth mentioning that the delusions and hallucinations a player experiences are unique to him—other players will not see or hear them.

Sanity Influence

Sanity levels decrease due to several factors, for example:
🔹Being alone,
🔹Traveling in the dark,
🔹Killing and skinning animals,
🔹Watching other players fight fake (invisible to them) creatures, and more.

Some ways to restore sanity may be e.g. being with other people, staying near sources of light or heat, or being near shelter decorations. Decorations include various items such as tables, chairs, and rugs, which not only improve the appearance of the house but also positively impact the sanity of players nearby. But there will also be other ways to restore your sanity.

Sanity Drop Effect

🔹Fake sounds – Players may hear the sounds of animals and creatures that are not actually there.
🔹Fake creatures – Players may see and hear animals or monsters, but these illusions vanish when they attempt to engage them.

🔹Sanity creatures – Figments of the imagination that become a real danger. These creatures can attack and harm players, but they are not necessarily aggressive right away.
Sanity Creatures👾
Sanity creatures appear when a player's sanity level drops low enough. We also want to emphasize that the Sanity System is not meant to turn this game into a psychological horror experience but rather to make players uncertain about what they see and hear, to signal to the player that things are getting really bad—since they are now seeing unreal creatures.

Sanity creatures will have different behaviors. Some will watch you from a distance, while others will only watch you when you look at them—but if you look away, they will teleport elsewhere. Some will follow you without taking any action, while others will observe you for a while before suddenly running toward you. If they are fake, they will simply disappear when they get close, but if they are real, they can cause damage.

We plan to make them a completely black humanoid silhouette with eyes only, but it has not been decided yet.
What have we been up to lately?
Recently, we have been working on and implementing several new mechanics. Some of them still require additional polishing, but we will be able to showcase them soon.
We added fishing. Also, we implemented crop farming – thanks to them, the player will be able to acquire key plants for survival passively.

🔸Traps – Players will be able to collect meat and skins without actively hunting.
🔸Shovel and Resource Gathering – We have added a shovel and the ability to dig for dirt and clay, which will be useful in crafting.
🔸Crafting Stations – We have added appropriate recipes to the recently shown crafting stations.
🔸New Outfits – We have added new outfit options, however they are not final. Outfit sets are made from all the animals the player can meet in the game.

Stay tuned for more updates, and let us know your thoughts on these new additions!

#4 Dev Diary | Crafting Stations

Hi Survivors!❄️

Welcome to our #4 Dev Diary. As promised in #2 Dev Diary, in this entry we’ll be sharing more details about the crafting system and crafting stations, which will play a key role in our game.

❗ Please keep in mind that the game is still in progress, so it may not reflect the final version. The graphics and gifs we’re showing today represent the current state of the game.❗

After a series of unfortunate events, you find yourself stranded in an ice-covered wilderness. Isolated from the rest of the world, you must rely on your skills and limited resources to survive. Along the way, you’ll need to craft a variety of essential items for survival, such as tools, weapons, and clothing.
That’s why crafting will be such an important part of the game. Players will need to craft everything from scratch – even the crafting tables!
Crafting – A Key Element of Survival 🛠️
There will be several different stations that a player can craft, each corresponding to a specific type of item.
On each crafting table, you’ll have access to a recipe book, where you can choose the recipe you want to craft. To choose an item, simply select the recipe in the book.

Then the crafting process begins. Players will need to place the correct materials in the crafting blueprint. The materials don’t need to be placed in any specific order. Crafting at each station will follow a similar process, but each station may differ in small nuances - to complete crafting you will need to perform a different activity at different stations.
Crafting Stations Overview🔨
🔹Tool Station - crafting tools such as axe, hammer, etc.

🔹Sewing Table - crafting clothes and strings.

🔹Medical Station - crafting medical things like healing extracts.

🔹Pottery Station - crafting clay things. Pots, buckets, bottles.
What have we been up to lately?
Recently, we’ve been working on a lot of game mechanics that we’ll share in future diaries, such as the backpack system, skinning, melee combat, and more.
As sound plays a crucial role in immersion, recently we have also been focused on the sound system.
And, as a little sneak peek from our graphic team, here’s a look at the terrain we’ve been preparing.

#3 Dev Diary | Map, Weather System and Temperature

Hi!

In this diary, we will share some information about the game map and talk more about weather and temperature which will play a crucial role in the game.

Haven’t read our #1 and #2 Dev Diary yet? You can catch up on tthem here: https://store.steampowered.com/news/app/3054950/view/4605582245625273008

Please keep in mind that the game is still in progress, so it may not reflect the final version. The graphics and gifs we’re showing today represent the current state of the game.

Map and Zones 🗺️
Recently we’ve made progress on the game's map. We started by drafting initial sketches and dividing the map into zones.

Each zone will differ in terms of visuals, vegetation, weather, and terrain. The player’s access to these areas will depend on their character’s progression. Since each zone is unique, players will easily be able to identify which zone they’re currently in.

Here’s an initial sketch of the zones:

🔹Zone 1: There will be some grass visible under the snow, healthy trees, and water in puddles
🔹Zone 2: There will be snow on the trees, more snow on the ground, and water in puddles
🔹Zone 3: There will be dead trees here and there, and frozen puddles.
🔹Zone 4: Only dead trees, frozen puddles.
Weather System🌦️
The game will feature a dynamic weather system that will impact environmental temperature. Different weather conditions will change every day so there is always a feeling of uncertainty and motivation to be prepared, especially for snowstorms which may occur drastically impacting temperature.

Our team has been working on the weather system recently. Here is a prototype of different times of the day and weather conditions. Keep in mind that these may not reflect the final version.

Snowstorms ❄️

The game will offer a side mechanic of snowstorms that will occur randomly without any warning. This event will bring various effects and impact the temperature, the player and the environment.
Temperature 🌡️
As written above, each zone will also have a different temperature. That’s why our game designer has been working on the temperature system—the temperature will directly impact the player, adding another layer of immersion to the survival experience.

We have designed a temperature system that dynamically changes temperature value based on:

🔹 Weather - The current weather will affect the temperature.
🔹 Location on the map - Different areas of the map will have different temperatures, players will
have to strategies which places are currently available and which are inaccessible considering
their current equipment (clothing, resources, etc.)
🔹 Time of the day - Temperature will change based on time of day
🔹 Shelter, Heat Source - Being in the Shelter or nearby of the fire will impact temperature as
    well.

#2 Dev Diary | Interactivity, Character Model and Animals

Hello!

It’s been a while since the last dev update, but that also means that we have a lot to share with you. We’re excited to share our game development progress with you with you❄️🛠️

Haven’t read our #1 Dev Diary yet? You can catch up on it here: https://store.steampowered.com/news/app/3054950/view/4605582245625273008?

Please keep in mind that the game is still in progress, so it may not reflect the final version. The graphics and gifs we’re showing today represent the current state of the game.

Interactivity🔨
Our dev team has been recently working on the core mechanics of the game. We want the world of Frost Survival VR to be as interactive as possible, allowing the players to have the freedom to interact with the environment.

Some of the mechanics we've been working on include eg.:

🔹 implementing different methods for starting fires, using materials like stones, flint, and iron,
    🔹 backpack system,
🔹 cutting down and chopping trees,
🔹 the ability to throw objects,
    🔹 crafting,
🔹 scooping water with your hands, and many more.

Along the way, the player will have to craft many different items that are needed for survival, such as tools, weapons, or clothing. Players will require a variety of tools to fully exploit their surroundings.

Each tool and weapon has its purpose, and durability that determines how long it can be used until it is destroyed. To craft a new item, a player will need to use a crafting table. This is what we’ve been working on lately.

Currently, the crafting table works like this: a player chooses the item he wants to craft, a semi-transparent object appears on the table, and he has to throw in the right amount of materials to craft it. Ultimately we want there to be a Recipe Book on the table from which the player will be able to choose items to craft.
We will share more details about crafting in the future dev_diaries.
Character Model🧍
Our graphic team has been hard at work on the character design. As the art style for the game is stylized, we wanted to keep the character model in the same style.
At this stage, we’re finding ways to balance performance optimization with an attractive visual style that also serves gameplay needs.

The work was broken down into several stages:
  1. Concept design.
  2. Basic model creation.
  3. Separating clothing elements.
  4. Defining the final shapes.
  5. Adding details, rigging, and texturing.

We’re happy to present the current character model, ready for further testing in the game engine.
Animals🐺
As with any survival game, what would it be without animals?
The game will feature several types of animals that will provide players with access to resources such as meat, fur and tusks.
Animals, such as hares, boars, wolves, foxes, deer, snow leopards, mooses, and bears were added.
We focused on adjusting them to the map and implementing the death ragdoll mechanics.

Once you hunt one down, you can skin it and use the resources for crafting. Now, we’re diving into refining their behaviors, which are still in the prototype phase.

Animals will be divided into several categories depending on how they behave towards the player:

🔹Aggressive animals - These animals will attack the player when they get too close. An example of an aggressive animal is a wolf.

🔹Passive animals - This type of animal is very scared. For this reason, when the player gets close, they will immediately start running away from the player. Such animals are Deer and Hares.

🔹Defensive animals - This animal does not react to the player until the player attacks it. In case the player attacks it, it tries to defend itself against the player by attacking back. Such animals are wild Boars.

#1 Dev Diary | Base Building and Campfire

Hello!

Welcome to our first dev diary for Frost Survival VR! We're excited to give you a glimpse into what this game is all about and share some of the progress we've made recently. In future diaries, we'll dive deeper into the key features of the game, so be sure to follow our Steam page and wishlist the game to stay tuned for updates.

https://store.steampowered.com/app/3054950/Frost_Survival_VR/

Please keep in mind, that the game is still in progress, so it may not reflect the final version. The graphics and gifs we’re showing today represent the current state of the game. Our graphic team is actively working on a new art style, and we’ll keep you updated as we implement these changes.
Frost Survival VR
Frost will have elements from many different genres, but it can most accurately be summed up as ‘Multiplayer Sandbox Adventure Survival’.

After a series of unfortunate events, you find yourself surrounded by an ice-covered wilderness. Isolated from the rest of the world, you must rely on your own wists and limited resources to survive these harsh conditions.
The core gameplay focuses on performing survival activities while avoiding the events and factors that can cause death. The further you explore your surroundings, the more new materials you find that help you survive. Keep in mind that not every location is safe; some areas might be off-limits based on your current gear.
Survival & Base Building
The most important point of the map will be the shelter which the player will be using to escape frost and replenish vital strengths. This will be a place to warm up, protect yourself from wild animals, wait out snowstorms, store resources, and craft essential equipment. Recently we’ve been working on a shelter building mechanic. You'll need to chop down trees, break them into smaller pieces, and use these materials to build and enhance your shelter.
Survival & Campfire
Lately, our team has been focusing on developing fire-making mechanics and various interactions with campfires.
Fire will play a central role in your survival. Players will need to light campfires not only to stay warm, but also to cook food (like meat and fish on sticks), or place a stand to cook multiple things and also to purify water. Campfires won’t last forever, though—so players will need to manage them by adding wood or other flammable materials to keep them burning.
From the campfire, players can also light torches, which will help illuminate the pitch-black nights, provide a small warmth boost, and scare off predators that might be lurking in the dark.
