Dev Vlog: Production Story

Production Story

Hello! This is Shading Box!

Our project, Pocket Legend, has been in development for nearly three years now, and we thought we’d share our journey with you, and tell you a little bit about us!

We’re a fully remote team of three: myself (the founder), my wife, and our one employee.

[previewyoutube][/previewyoutube]
When we first started, Pocket Legend looked very different. Originally, it was an inventory merchant game where you sold items to heroes, as shown in this early screenshot:

To make the game more engaging, we added a draw system and turn-based combat, inspired by our love for Slay the Spire. This led us to the current gameplay style you see today:

Fun Fact: The original main character, Carrie, is now an NPC who runs the shop in the current version!

At first, players used basic weapons like leather armor and wooden swords. But since “inventory” is our game’s identity, we wanted each weapon to have its own unique lore and presence. This led us to incorporate legendary weapons and armor from mythology and folklore around the world.

We’ve drawn inspiration from Arthurian legend, Norse mythology, Greek mythology, Chinese legends, Celtic myths, Charlemagne legends, Indian mythology, Japanese folklore, Korean mythology, The Song of the Nibelungs, Dietrich legends, and more.

(If you’re a mythology fan, you’ll enjoy spotting which weapons and enemies appear in each stage!)

We thought it would be fun if these legendary weapons, infused with souls, became the heart of the story—like “Ego Swords.” Each weapon or enemy feels like a “pocket monster” in weapon form. That’s why we chose the name Pocket Legend over common inventory-related terms like “backpack.”
The Current State
The gaming industry in Korea is struggling, and freelance work has largely dried up due to the economic downturn. But we’re holding on, and we’re proud to share that Pocket Legend will enter Early Access next April. We’re doing everything we can to make sure it’s polished and ready for you!

Your support means the world to us and thank you for following us! If you haven’t wishlisted Pocket Legend, we’d greatly appreciate if you did so!
