Slay the Spire style deckbuilder with brutal, gut-wrenching twist gets new demo

Sometimes the only road to victory is to sacrifice some of the cards in your hand and hope for better ones. In The Royal Writ, sacrificing your cards is just as crucial as playing them. Blending deckbuilders and roguelikes in true Slay the Spire fashion, placing your army of battle-hardened animals requires true strategy, asking you if you're brave enough to sacrifice the required troops to ensure victory. Permanently. Oh, and it's free to play now.

Grim and joyful deckbuilder The Royal Writ is coming for genre king Balatro next month

The Fool King is dead, long live the Deckbuilder King. The Decking, if you will. Publishers Yogscast Games have announced that festive card-based roguelite The Royal Writ will launch on 7th August.

The Royal Writ seems pretty spesh, and yet, we have never covered it before, because we are blundering philistines. Sorry about that. In our defence, this is yet another cousin of Balatro on some level, and there's only so many of those I can process in one year before my thumbs and eyes swell up in protest. But based on a quick snort of the Steam demo, The Royal Writ stands apart thanks to 1) immensely jovial animated storybook visuals 2) an interesting set of card sacrifice mechanics. Here is a trailer.

From the Court: A Lively World and an Exciting Showcase!

[p]Wake up Kingdom, it's time for another From The Court! We love asking the devs about their inspirations and thought processes during development and sharing them when you![/p][p][/p][p][/p]
Have you ever paid much attention to the background in game?
[p][/p][p]I know I wanted to put little animations everywhere in the game, because generally not a lot of deckbuilders use 2d hand-drawn animations, and us working with it all the time it seemed like an opportunity to stand out visually this way. While it is a ton of work going through all the traditional animation phases (layout-animation-cleanup-coloring) it has such a unique vibe that we didn’t want to cut corners in this way.[/p][p][/p][p][/p][p][/p][p]One example is that all the backgrounds have little characters going about their day, all of them do something fun if you happen to take a look at it.[/p][p][/p][p]We love the little details![/p][p][/p][p][/p]
Secret Sauce is TOMORROW??
[p][/p][p]Y'all. From the Court: Losing Time, Lego Inspirations and Community Art!
Welcome back to another royal decree From the Court!
[p][/p][p][/p][p][/p]
ā°Have you ever caught yourself playing The Royal Writ so much that you've almost missed something important?
[p][/p][p]Well, our MD, Simon sure did. [/p][p][/p][p][/p]

[p]What's the longest you've played in one sitting? I feel like we should probably throw a warning label on the game.[/p][p][/p][p][/p]
šŸ‘ If you're a hardcore LEGO fan, you may have noticed something...
[p][/p][p]Have you ever wondered why some of the characters look a little bit familiar?[/p][p][/p][p][/p][p]Straight from the dev, KornĆ©l: As I’m an avid collector of old LEGO sets, it's no wonder that a lot of times I’m inspired by their whimsical world. I’m especially a big fan of Fabuland, which I think found a perfect balance with their characters’ proportions and general cuteness, so from that point on they were the blueprint and some of the earliest characters are very much directly based on them.[/p][p][/p][p]Fabuland was introduced in 1979, btw. That's so much older than I am.[/p][p][/p][p]Here's another set that KornĆ©l shared with us, you might notice the Robert Horka inspiration![/p][p][/p][p]This is the Camouflaged Outpost from way back in 1987![/p][p][/p][p][/p][p]And a personal favourite from KornĆ©l, the Fabulands fellas on their steamboat from 1985.[/p][p][/p][p][/p][p]Inspiration can really come from anywhere![/p][p][/p][p][/p]
šŸ”Ž Community Spotlight: Our King by BubbleWizardOG
[p][/p][p]One of our community members has graciously immortalised the King in a royal portrait!
