Post MAGFest Update

Hey everybody,

It was a long few days but I finally recovered from MAGFest and because everything went so well, we felt it was worth sharing an update with all of you.

I want to especially thank everybody who signed up for the mailing list at MAGFest - your support truly means a lot! It might not seem like much, but as the rest of you know, it goes a long way and keeps the team motivated. So we can’t thank you enough!
Like Music?
If you haven't signed up for our mailing list, then you need to in order to get our free soundtrack suite. Honestly, it's really the only way you can listen to it in all its glory!
In addition to that, we have a bunch of other cool stuff that you'll get too, so it's definitely worth joining the adventure!
MAGFEST was just…
Wonderful! It was great seeing so many people get a chance to test out the game for us. We got a ton of good feedback which was extremely beneficial.
I especially appreciated getting to see people’s reactions to the introduction in “Story Mode.”

We even had a super dedicated player beat the ENTIRE GAME (in chunks over time), and another player get about to the 75-80% mark!

It was fun getting to meet and talk to so many gamers. As usual, we met a surprising number of other Chrises! At one point, we came pretty close to having a Chrisfecta (three Chrises are playing at once)!

We had a few folks try out the new “Lightweight Mode,” which was very helpful, as there are definitely some spots that need smoothing out there (but nothing too tough to correct!).

So now it’s back to work on the game - we’ve got to get the graphics and mechanics for the last boss finalized, and we’ve got a few other things we want to polish, and then it should be beta time!

Thanks so much for making MAGFest another great experience and being a part of our journey. We hope you enjoy all the music too!

Feel free to share what you like about Adventures of Chris with your friends, family, and fellow Chrises! :P

Regardless if it’s a mention on Facebook or Twitter, subscribing on YouTube, adding us to your Steam wish list or downloading the soundtrack, it all goes a long way!

December 2019 Progress Report

Hey, world travelers, it’s time for a quick December update!

But first, make sure you don’t miss the free gift we’re giving you for devoted fans! Just subscribe to our email list to get it if you haven’t already!

Get Ready for MAGFest!

We’re showcasing again this year at MAGFest in Washington, DC, so if you’re in the area, swing by and check us out! The game has progressed so much over the past year – I’m really looking forward to trying out all the new stuff with everybody.

If all goes well, we’ll have three stations instead of two this year, meaning more game time for everyone!

Getting the Mechanics Down

I’m working right now on the mechanics of the super-secret final boss (although I guess maybe not that much of a secret…), which is the final piece of the puzzle before we send out the beta.

The goal was to beta ready by now, but having the game in good shape and truly fleshed out will make a better experience for everyone.

As far as game structure goes, I’ve been comparing the boss to Ruby Weapon of Final Fantasy VII fame. However, that’s not a completely appropriate comparison, as this boss won’t be that difficult, and the character should wrap up several dangling story threads in a (hopefully) awesome way.

A Little Something for the Holidays

Ok, the holiday’s aside, we thought folks would enjoy a bonus portion of the game’s soundtrack for anyone who signs up for the mailing list.

If you haven’t yet, head on over to our email sign-up page to get all the updates, beta access, plus the soundtrack suite and other bonus stuff!

Like Indie Game Music?

As another bonus, I decided to rank my top 10 favorite indie game soundtracks and share my reasons with you!

If you’re curious, click on over and give some of these artists a listen – there’s some really nice stuff, I think, especially if you’re into melodic music that captures the values of retro soundtracks 😀

Thanks so much for being a part of our journey. We hope you enjoy all the music and most of all any holidays you may be celebrating.

___________________________________________________________

While you’re spreading some cheer this month, feel free to share what you like about Adventures of Chris with your friends and family.

Regardless if it’s a mention on Facebook or Twitter, subscribing on YouTube, adding us to your Steam wish list or downloading the soundtrack, it all goes a long way!

As always, thanks for your support! 😀

October 2019 Progress Report

Wellllll we’re a tad behind schedule. We’ve had some technical difficulties here and there, but we’re still making progress.

This is an important thing we want you to know, so you don’t think we’ve died or something.

Story Mode Status

Story Mode of Adventures of Chris is basically complete at this point, except for some finalized animations and endgame content.

That content by the way, is wayyyyy too secret to tell you about now, but may or may not contain a secret boss character of some kind (hint: it does) and possibly gambling.

The final boss fight is implemented, the final story sequences are implemented, and even the part where the game says “The End” and kicks you back out to the title screen is implemented.
So there’s that.

So Much Excitement

I really wanted to have the full content of the basic Story Mode of the game ready to go when we launch beta testing, which is still a thing I intend to do. So get ready! It’s coming soon!
I’m really excited about a lot of the stuff we’ve been working on - big bad boss fights, story content, and so forth.

So much so, that we’re submitting Adventures of Chris to a number of indie game showcases. We’ll see how that goes as far as scheduling and such and will keep you posted on those events!

While somewhat relating to the development of the game, we also wrote an article on the glories of Metroid’s “Screw Attack” and how tough it is to recreate that wondrous feeling in Adventures of Chris. Be sure to check it out here!

I think that’s about all I’ve got. So you can all stop worrying if Kyle and I fell down in the shower or drove into a ditch or something, because neither of those things happened. The game is still chugging along.

For those of you still wanting more, the answer to your fulfillment is simple.
Follow us on Twitter, Facebook, or even YouTube, where we’re now posting longer gameplay videos.

Thanks for following our work! You people are the best. :)

August Update

Hey world travelers! We have been busy plugging away at things. It’s been a fun journey so far, but let’s go ahead and get to the good stuff!

Nearly Complete

So we're approaching being "content complete" for the main Story Mode of the game. YAY!

The art for the final boss is in the works, and the last half of the more narrative-focused "Act Two" is being laid out. It's getting pretty close!
Close, that is, but not quite close enough to make our "Mid 2019" release for Steam. :(

As to be expected with a lot of games in development, we're going to have to push our release date to "Late 2019" at least.

Once the beta goes live (which will be once we have the complete playthrough available for Story Mode), we'll need some time to respond to feedback and tweak things to get everything just right.

That also means our Discord server will be fully up and running too once beta goes live. So if you’re interested in wanting to be more involved with Adventures of Chris, make sure to stay tuned for when we launch our Discord channel too.

Pushing things back is a familiar story amongst us indie devs, but yeah, we want to make sure the game we put out is the best it can be!
Trust us, the wait will be worth it. :)

Egypt

We have had Egypt in the works for a while now and the level is finally finished. Creating this level was a lot of fun for us.

Everything from animating mummies that spew out mummified matter to completing the level with a pretty cool boss fight. Here Chris goes up against a powerful sorceress who calls herself "Selqet" after the Egyptian goddess of poison.

Naturally, she also has a giant pet scorpion named Susan.

Act Two

I don't want to give away too much of the narrative in Act Two, but the stakes definitely get raised.

Chris’s quest at first is relatively simple - figure out how to change all the transformed kids back to normal. Unfortunately, Chris runs into some… well… complications. He discovers that not everything is cookies and milkshakes and there's more going on in the magical world than meets the eye!

Act Two is something we’re really looking forward to fleshing out and we’ll share a little more as we get closer to our new intended release date.

Various and Sundry

That’s all that we got for now, world travelers. Oh, we did put together a new trailer/teaser of Adventures of Chris you can check out here!

And if you haven’t yet, be sure to wishlist us. It really does help us out (and you too) for any updates we make and when the game does go live.
As always, we appreciate your interest and support.

June Update

Howdy, world travelers! Hope you’re having a happy June! Here’s a quick update on the progress we’ve been making with Adventures of Chris.

It's Starting to All Come Together

We’re getting remarkably close to being within sight of the goal line – all 8 of the original world map levels are now completed. Chris can take a dive aboard a submarine to the Great Barrier Reef, dodge tricky laser patterns, and do battle with criminal mastermind Large Urchin.

The 9th level (and final tileset), Egypt, is well underway, with most graphic assets completed and the first several rooms constructed.

Once Egypt is complete, we’ll just have a few incidentals and a few final boss characters to finish up! Fortunately, most of the story of the more linear second half of the game will take Chris back to established locations and revisit old friends (and give him new abilities we’ve already programmed!), so we’re getting really close!

The Icing on the Cake

We’ve also added a few treats and side experiences for players as they reach the late game. Villagers have all new dialog now that Chris has won some respect (potentially :P). The Royal Cartographer in the castle offers a new, brief mini-game for Chris to play.

And if Chris heads to the Cirrus Club, he can now meet… Kyle! Just for fun, we’ve placed a representation of the game’s artist (at 9 years old in 1995) in the Kingdom of Lost Balloons. So now you can see a little bit more of the behind-the-scenes of the game… in the game!

Di,di...did we say Discord?

Marketing is coming along – we’re working on setting up a Discord server for beta testing, and we’ve already been beefing up our Twitter and Facebook presence (you can help support us by following our accounts in either place!).

We’ve got some other exciting ideas for getting the word out, so we’re looking forward to the next few months as we approach release.

If you haven’t yet, mosey on over to the Steam page and wishlist us there!
