Hollow Knight News

Hollow Knight's creators didn't want to be constrained by the 'metroidvania' label, but they accidentally set a standard that every game since—even Silksong—has to reckon with

In a 2017 interview about the making of Hollow Knight's map, designer William Pellen told me that Team Cherry "shied away completely" from describing the game as a metroidvania. Artist Ari Gibson added that they didn't want to "let a genre dictate" the decisions they made about Hollow Knight's design while they were making it...

With Silksong just a week away, grab the original Hollow Knight at half price

Naturally, I'm pumped for Hollow Knight: Silksong. Honestly, I can't wait; it feels like it was announced a century ago. For those who never got around to playing the original, now would be the ideal time to grab it, because Humble Bundle is offering it at 50% off. I'm sure Silksong will be accessible to newcomers, but I always think it's nice to be filled in on all the lore and history before playing new games.

The best Metroidvanias to play right now

What are the best Metroidvania games? Nintendo's Super Metroid and Konami's Castlevania: Symphony of the Night popularized the Metroidvania, but the genre has come into its own since these inaugural titles.

While many of the best Metroidvanias try to recapture the spirit of their forebears, others expand into new territories by incorporating mechanics from RPGs, soulslikes, and even pinball. The result is a dynamic genre offering a wealth of familiar and fresh experiences - some recent, many of them cheap, and a few of them some of the best PC games ever made.

"Team Cherry is still cooking" - Geoff Keighley wants you to know you shouldn't expect Hollow Knight: Silksong at Gamescom Opening Night Live

Expecting to see Hollow Knight: Silksong at Gamescom Opening Night Live? You definitely shouldn't, as long as Geoff Keighley isn't lying to us.

With every single games showcase that is announced, there is always one game that you can spot in the replies: Hollow Knight: Silksong. It's no surprise, ever since its reveal as a standalone title in 2019, fans have been clamouring for a release date, and there hasn't been that many updates from Team Cherry since then. Back in 2022 it was at least confirmed that it would be coming to Xbox Game Pass day one, and in 2023 the official Xbox Twitter account much too confidently claimed it would be out the same year. Many showcases later, here we are over halfway through 2024, and there's still no indication as to when it might be released - but of course, that hasn't stopped fans asking if it'll show up next week at Gamescom Opening Night Live. The answer? No.

Yesterday, on his personal Twitter account, The Game Awards host Geoff Keighley said: "Just to get this out of the way, no Silksong on Tuesday at ONL. Team Cherry is still cooking." That'll obviously be disappointing for fans who had somehow convinced themselves that this was the one, but honestly feels pretty par for the course when it comes to Silksong at this point in time. Really, it'll be out when it's out, and there are constantly too many games these days anyway, so just play something else while you wait, alright?

Hollow Knight: Silksong is taking so long to come out, it's already been remade in Minecraft

Everyone is still waiting for Hollow Knight: Silksong to release, so one YouTuber took it into their hands to get it made in Minecraft.

Yeah, yeah, I know, Silksong out yet and it's frustrating. We're all waiting on it! And it is taking a while, but you know what? I bet you haven't even beaten Shadow of the Erdtree yet, so let's put a pin in Silksong for the time being, shall we? Sorry, you're so desperate to play absolutely anything from Silksong that you think you'll burst into a giant plume of confetti if you don't? Fine, alright, calm down. You're in luck, actually, because as it turns out, you can now play Silksong's fabled 2019 E3 demo… in Minecraft. As spotted by TheGamer, YouTuber Primacon commissioned Minecraft map maker Clouser to recreate the 2019 Silksong E3 demo, which you can check out below.

Clouser has experience in putting Hollow Knight in Minecraft, as they actually remade the first three areas of the metroidvania in everyone's favourite game about blocks previously. On this occasion, Clouser has recreated the two areas available to play in the Silksong demo, Deep Docks and Moss Grotto, both of which have boss fights named Lace and Mossmother respectively. Rather than a simple menu letting you choose which area you want to explore, there's a little hub area where you can select which one you want to play.
