Marvel's Midnight Suns DLC will include new superheroes and cosmetics

Marvel's Midnight Suns' character roster is basically complete now that Spider-Man and Scarlet Witch have been confirmed, but if you're worried your favourite superhero hasn't made the cut don't worry - it's possible they'll make it into Firaxis' upcoming Marvel strategy game as DLC.

"There are more characters coming post release," confirms senior franchise producer Garth DeAngelis. "We have four heroes in the works... they're gonna have their own story missions, they're gonna have the full gameplay suite. So all new abilities that you'll be able to bring into your decks as well as developing friendships with them and relationships and things like that."

These characters will likely come as part of the season pass announced today during Summer Game Fest. DeAngelis stopped short of confirming the identities of the new heroes, but Midnight Suns already contains characters from several areas of Marvel fandom - The Avengers, X-Men, New Mutants, and heroes like Blade and Ghost Rider. DeAngelis also says that Marvel has been really easy to work with, and the implication is Firaxis has free reign to introduce any characters it feels it has the resources to do so.

If you're still kind of bummed that Firaxis' new strategy game, Marvel's Midnight Suns, is not XCOM 3, then don't worry - the studio hasn't forgotten about the science fiction series. But its new Marvel tactical RPG was "too good" an opportunity to pass up, according to senior franchise producer Garth DeAngelis.

"We just had this opportunity that was placed on our lap," DeAngelis says. According to creative director Jake Solomon, Marvel approached Firaxis about getting the XCOM studio to create a game using the IP. This was around 2017, the year Firaxis released the War of the Chosen expansion for XCOM 2. "It's totally natural to say, where else can we go? And frankly, that's a blessing. That's a good problem to have," DeAngelis admits.

As much as XCOM 3 would have been a logical next step, it seems fate - and Solomon's legendary passion for all things Marvel - intervened, and so the studio pivoted to Midnight Suns instead. "We can explore new territory that's exciting," DeAngelis points out, "these things that XCOM 3 aren't necessarily about that we can do with this IP are incredibly exciting. We can blaze new ground there."

Want to know the Marvel's Midnight Suns release date? This new strategy game from the creators of XCOM: Enemy Unknown and XCOM 2 aims to uniquely capture the energy of superhero combat in a turn-based strategy game. It involves tactical battles, and a real time RPG layer where you can walk around your home base, talk to other superheroes, upgrade your gear, and hunt for secrets and hidden content.

Marvel's Midnight Suns release date was announced during Summer Games Fest, and it's going to be a slow four months as we wait to get our hands-on the game again. We had the chance to check out Midnight Suns' opening gameplay, and while it might not be XCOM 3, it's certainly shaping up to be more than just a cash-in on a popular IP.

It's not just the release date that we know about - 2K and Firaxis have shared details on other aspects as well, such as post-launch DLC plans, as well as the playable roster of heroes at launch. We've put together a quick guide on everything we know about the game at this stage, and we'll keep it up-to-date as more information is announced.

Marvel's Midnight Suns is a bold superhero strategy game

Marvel's Midnight Suns is nothing if not brave. It's brave enough trying to create a Marvel videogame at all given the popularity of this IP, and braver still to make it a strategy game based on one of the most niche comic runs from the '90s. And considering this particular development team is known for XCOM, Firaxis achieves peak bravery by going off in completely new directions - adding an overworld RPG layer and a brand-new turn-based combat system, to name but two.

But as the saying goes, fortune favours the brave. I've spent the lion's share of an afternoon playing through the opening sections of Midnight Suns, and I can say that this unique turn-based strategy game will defy any expectations you've formed since the original announcement.

The basics are still as were revealed during the announcement. You lead a team of Marvel superheroes as The Hunter, your avatar. This fully customisable hero will lead the actual greatest crossover event in history from a stronghold known as The Abbey, which is a hub area and the linchpin for Firaxis' brand-new RPG mechanics. Unlike in XCOM, you can walk around this space in real time, talk to individual heroes, and explore the grounds looking for secrets, gear upgrades, and banter.
