Marvel's Midnight Suns News

The Civilization devs' Marvel game has been delayed just two months after it was revealed

Marvel's Midnight Suns, a superheroic strategy game from Firaxis, the studio behind XCOM and Civilization, was announced just over two months ago ahead of its planned launch in March 2022. However, the game has already been delayed. Marvel's Midnight Suns is now due to launch in the second half of 2022.

"We decided to share that we've made the very tough decision to move our launch window to the second half of 2022," the devs say in a tweet. "We know many fans were looking forward to playing the game originally next spring, and this decision did not come lightly. We decided to push our launch because we need more time to make this the best game possible."

The devs say that the extra development time "will be used to add more story, cinematics, and overall polish, and will be essential in helping us make our vision a reality". This announcement comes alongside the latest financial report from Take-Two, the parent company of the game's publisher, 2K.

Former Uncharted lead announces a triple-A narrative-driven Marvel game

Big-budget Marvel's films have more or less taken over the movie world, but triple-A games about those characters have been a bit harder to come by - especially outside of Sony's first-party PlayStation offerings. Now another studio is taking a blockbuster swing at Marvel: Skydance New Media, under the direction of former Uncharted lead Amy Hennig.

Skydance New Media has issued a press release announcing a "partnership with Marvel Entertainment to develop a narrative-driven, blockbuster action-adventure game, featuring a completely original story and take on the Marvel Universe". There are no further details on what shape the game will take just yet, but Marvel Games head Jay Ong says more info will come "when the time is right".

Disney and its vast catalogue of media franchises are starting to return to the world of traditional, triple-A videogames after years of only sporadic releases. Sony and Insomniac are working on Spider-Man 2 and Wolverine for PlayStation 5. Firaxis is making the multi-platform Marvel strategy game, Midnight Suns. (We've also got Machine Games' Indiana Jones game and Ubisoft's Star Wars game, plus the KOTOR remake, on the way.)

Firaxis' new strategy RPG Marvel's Midnight Suns won't have microtransactions

It may not be Xcom 3, but Firaxis' new strategy RPG game Marvel's Midnight Suns still came out of the gates swinging after we got treated to our first glimpse of gameplay earlier this week.

Naturally, there are a lot of unanswered questions surrounding the game, but some of them at least may have been answered thanks to an NME interview with Firaxis. Chiefly, the studio confirmed that Midnight Suns will not have any microtransactions. "This is meant to be a single-player tactics RPG," creative director Jake Solomon told the site. When pressed on whether this ruled out cosmetic DLC options or similar add-ons, he confirmed ""Right, no. That's not what we're aiming for here."

What this means regarding larger expansions or other forms of post-launch content is currently unclear, though. XCOM: Chimera Squad, the most recent non-Civilization game to come out of Firaxis, didn't receive any post-launch content. While this doesn't indicate anything concrete with regards to the studios' intentions for Midnight Suns, it does suggest a precedent.

Midnight Suns isn't just Marvel XCOM - it's Marvel Mass Effect and Into the Breach, too

Today, we got a much more substantial look at Marvel: Midnight Suns, the long-rumoured superhero strategy game from the XCOM and Civilization devs at Firaxis. In some ways, it is the Marvel XCOM that we expected, but there's more to it than that - you can trace inspirations to deckbuilding games, Mass Effect, and even Into the Breach.

Combat is turn-based, and your characters will have their abilities dealt out like a hand of cards, giving you a selection of combat options to choose from at any time. Some abilities just deal damage, while others provide buffs or detrimental effects to enemies. Still others will knock enemies around in the environment, allowing you to set up chain reactions by, say, tossing a bad guy into an explosive barrel, reminiscent of the excellent indie strategy game, Into the Breach.

You play as the Hunter, an original character that you can customise how you like, and you'll enter battle with a team of familiar Marvel heroes drawn from teams like the Avengers, X-Men, and Runaways. Between missions, a place simply called 'the abbey' will serve as the Normandy does in Mass Effect, letting you build (platonic) relationships with your fellow heroes.
