Marvel XCOM Midnight Suns release edges closer due to rating

A proper Marvel Midnight Suns release date is edging ever closer, as the long-awaited Marvel XCOM meets card game - the next game from the creators of XCOM: Enemy Unknown - has been rated in South Korea, so the turn-based strategy game seems likely for 2022.

Marvel's Midnight Suns was announced in August last year as a tactical RPG game from Firaxis, the studio behind the XCOM and Civilization games. It was originally down for a March 2022 release, but just two months after the announcement Midnight Suns was delayed to "late 2022".

We're now close to the second half of the year and Marvel's Midnight Suns still doesn't have a release date - but it looks like an announcement is imminent, since the strategy game was just rated for sale in South Korea (as spotted on Reddit). It was rated 15, a relatively high rating mostly because of "violence and blood toward living things", according to Google translate. While this doesn't guarantee a release soon, hopefully it's not too far off.

Despite the absence of any Spider-Man games on PC, there's still plenty of Marvel content incoming. This includes the new game coming from Uncharted co-creator Amy Hennig's studio Skydance New Media, which was just announced as a Marvel collaboration this week - and may be a Fantastic Four, Daredevil, or Hawkeye game.

Skydance New Media announced the project in a press release on October 29 and only revealed that it was "a narrative-driven, blockbuster action-adventure game" that featured Marvel characters and was not connected with the movies or any other games. The game's subject, or what heroes will be playable, is unknown at this time.

However, just a few days later writer Marc Bernardin - who's worked for both DC and Marvel, as well as on shows like Picard and Masters of the Universe: Revelation - confirmed on Kevin Smith's podcast that he had been working on the game for the last year or so. After a brief discussion, Kevin Smith himself revealed that a response in the chat "nailed it dead" on what the Marvel game would be about.

The Civilization devs' Marvel game has been delayed just two months after it was revealed

Marvel's Midnight Suns, a superheroic strategy game from Firaxis, the studio behind XCOM and Civilization, was announced just over two months ago ahead of its planned launch in March 2022. However, the game has already been delayed. Marvel's Midnight Suns is now due to launch in the second half of 2022.

"We decided to share that we've made the very tough decision to move our launch window to the second half of 2022," the devs say in a tweet. "We know many fans were looking forward to playing the game originally next spring, and this decision did not come lightly. We decided to push our launch because we need more time to make this the best game possible."

The devs say that the extra development time "will be used to add more story, cinematics, and overall polish, and will be essential in helping us make our vision a reality". This announcement comes alongside the latest financial report from Take-Two, the parent company of the game's publisher, 2K.

Big-budget Marvel's films have more or less taken over the movie world, but triple-A games about those characters have been a bit harder to come by - especially outside of Sony's first-party PlayStation offerings. Now another studio is taking a blockbuster swing at Marvel: Skydance New Media, under the direction of former Uncharted lead Amy Hennig.

Skydance New Media has issued a press release announcing a "partnership with Marvel Entertainment to develop a narrative-driven, blockbuster action-adventure game, featuring a completely original story and take on the Marvel Universe". There are no further details on what shape the game will take just yet, but Marvel Games head Jay Ong says more info will come "when the time is right".

Disney and its vast catalogue of media franchises are starting to return to the world of traditional, triple-A videogames after years of only sporadic releases. Sony and Insomniac are working on Spider-Man 2 and Wolverine for PlayStation 5. Firaxis is making the multi-platform Marvel strategy game, Midnight Suns. (We've also got Machine Games' Indiana Jones game and Ubisoft's Star Wars game, plus the KOTOR remake, on the way.)
