Mysteries of Old Tokyo News

Demo v1.1.1 (Build 62)

[p][/p][p]Historically, the area of Tokyo east of the Sumida River was poorer and less developed, compared to the area around the Imperial Palace. Until this update, that was the same case for Mysteries of Old Tokyo - but now we welcome the Hanzōmon Line and 12 new stations to the game, including the important hub of Kinshichō and Oshiage for the Tokyo Skytree.[/p][p]There's also numerous fixes to make puzzling a bit less clunky, including the ability to save marks when finding similarities and quickly check text and image clues at the same time.[/p]
Features
[p]Expanded the Tokyo rail network, now including stations east of the Sumida River and the all-new Hanzōmon line.[/p][p]The “similarity finder” screen on the report database is now part of the postcard page. This means you can leave and return to the similarity finder without losing your progress, and browse the text and image clues while plotting your marks. Also, you can go back and review the modern-day image after a successful analysis.[/p]
Puzzles
[p]Small fixes to make tutorial and puzzles a bit clearer.[/p]
Bug fixes
[p]Music should now start playing correctly if you quit and restart in the middle of the tutorial.[/p][p]Music should generally play a bit more consistently now, instead of getting stuck and stopping.[/p]
Other
[p]The “Back to city” button on the map screen is now changed to the more accurate “View last postcard”.[/p]

Demo v1.01 update (Build 65)

[p]It’s only been a day, but already a ton of people have played the demo and sent feedback! Thanks to everyone who has played and/or streamed the game - it makes me so happy to hear how much people have enjoyed it![/p][p]The feedback has been so useful. I’m very glad to be able to fix some of the more common observations right away.[/p]
Puzzle fixes
• [p]The “Imperial Guard camp by the statue of Kusunoki” clue was misleading, since the game would select it as a valid location for 1868-1899 despite the fact that the statue was only installed in 1900. This has been changed to the more plausible “Imperial Guard camp in the Imperial Palace grounds”, which is correct for 1868-1948.[/p]
Bug fixes
• [p]The player icon would often cover up pins on the map (postcard locations and stations) making it impossible to click them unless you moved away and back again. Now, mousing over a pin will bring it in front of the player icon, so it can be interacted with normally even if the player pin is right in that location.[/p]
 • [p]The music volume was a little high due to a bug that reset it to maximum - sorry for everyone’s ears. It should now default to a more moderate level.[/p]
 • [p]Music volume can now be accessed at any time from the widget on the right side of the desktop, rather than having to go through the main menu. As a result, the volume options in the main menu have been removed.[/p]
[p]Please keep your feedback coming, and remember to leave a review if you liked the demo![/p]

Demo launch this Friday, Oct 3

[p]Hey fans of old Tokyo![/p][p]I'm seeing some great and sustained support recently which is awesome. In the words of James Murphy: "Thank you for supporting this weird thing."[/p]
Playtest ends later today
[p]A genuine-honest-from-the-bottom-of-my-heart thank you to everyone who playtested the demo. If you sent me any feedback at all, trust me it has been carefully recorded and in many cases, already changed the development of the game.[/p][p]Your feedback has been so useful - bugs I knew about but thought no one would notice, bugs I never noticed, awesome new ideas that have really made the game better, and just nice things about the game.[/p][p]So thank you! You know who you all are.[/p][p]I'll be winding down the playtest today about midnight EEST (UTC+03), but just for today, I've opened up the playlist so you can try it out right now without joining the waitlist![/p]
Demo releases this Friday, Oct 3
[p]And so as the playtest ends, the demo enters its final steps of readiness. The playtest went so well, I will be releasing the demo a few days early - October 3, on Friday, so you'll have the whole weekend to try it out. I hope you enjoy it! With a tutorial and two chapters of the full game, I think there's a good chunk of content to give you a flavour.[/p]
New Japanese title
[p]Naturally, I thought it would be nice if "Mysteries of Old Tokyo" had at least some Japanese localisation (although localising the game is a bit out of scope at the moment). So with the help of my translator we now have a Japanese title:[/p]
帝都ミステリ紀行
[p]Teito Mystery Kikō - "Imperial Capital Mystery Travelogue"[/p][p]I tried it out on the box art and it looks very nice:[/p][p][/p]
Finnish Games Week (Oct 6-10)
[p]Finally, preparations are gearing up for Finnish Games Week! Mysteries of Old Tokyo will be part of the Steam event, which is the first official thing of any kind I'll be taking part in. Which is very exciting. Can't wait to find out more about the other games included![/p][p][/p][p][/p]

Playtest Now Available

[p]Good news, everyone![/p]
New trailer and demo release on Oct 6
[p]Firstly: the demo release is confirmed for Oct 6 to coincide with the start of Finnish Games Week '25.[/p][p]The demo is packed with cool stuff:[/p]
 • [p]Quick 10-minute tutorial chapter[/p]
 • [p]Chapters 1 and 2 from the full game[/p]
 • [p]Seven postcard locations and three characters from the full game[/p]
 • [p]Extensive Tokyo train network covering 150+ years of Japanese railways[/p]
 • [p]Endless mode where you can replay Chapter 2 with new characters, locations, and clues[/p]
[p]To celebrate this, there is a new trailer which incorporates a lot of the new features and graphical upgrades over the last couple of months, so be sure to check that out if you have a minute.[/p]
Playtest is rolling out!
[p]Secondly: In preparation for the demo, the playtest is now open![/p][p]Thank you to everyone who has already signed up for the playtest. There's still plenty of time to take part in the playtest if you don't want to wait for the demo: you can register your interest with the Request Access button on the store page for Mysteries of Old Tokyo. I'll gradually add more and more playtesters from the queue over time.[/p][p]Some lucky playtesters will have already received access so please enjoy! Don't forget to send feedback if you come across a bug or something strange.[/p][p]That's everything for now. See you in October, and if you haven't already, don't forget to wishlist the game![/p]
