Welcome Selenge River, Mongolia

Embark on a fishing trip across Mongolia and test your skills in catching the amazing inhabitants of the Selenge River!

Welcome to the vast expanses of Northern Mongolia! It is here, in the hilly forest-steppe, that one of the biggest rivers that feed Baikal - the Selenge - flows.

We’ve also prepared a surprise for you! To get to the Selenge River, your character doesn’t have to be at maximum level. Reaching level 48 will be enough!

More information about the new waterway in our Dev's Diaries!

In its middle course, the Selenge has a mostly flat appearance with alternating narrowing and hollow-like expansions, where the river divides into channels, forming multiple islands.

The shores, occasionally overgrown with sparse forest, are mostly clay-sandy, and only occasionally pebbles are found. In view of this, the water in the river is always muddy, having a dark gray color.

The current is average, and the depth, on average, is up to 3 meters, but there are also holes up to 7 meters.
4 stunning locations with an unforgettable atmosphere of ancient Mongolia
Tom Gal

There is a place on the eastern bank surrounded by two narrow distributaries of the river. The locals call the encampment Tom Gal, which means ‘Big Fire” in Mongolian. Apparently, the local waters teem with fish and have long been a favorite spot of the locals. This small pebbled open space is surrounded by a forest. There is a large fire pit in the center of the clearing. People obviously come here often. This quiet and peaceful place literally invites you to sit down by the fire, warm up, and rest, watching the flow of the river and enjoying the sounds of nature after a good catch.

Nomadic Camp

On Selenge’s western bank, you can witness the traditional life of local nomadic tribes. Not far away from the river, several frame yurts stand covered with snow-white felt. Around them, life is in full swing: horses neigh and snort, dogs bark, voices ring. Behind a small fence, several two-humped camels are standing calmly, a flock of sheep is grazing freely in the distance, and a steppe eagle is soaring in the sky. This enjoyable glimpse of a traditional lifestyle will be a great addition to your main goal here — fishing!

Ancient Hitching Post

At the foot of the hill on the western bank of the Selenge, one can find ritual hitching posts — serge. In ancient times it was possible to cross the river into a ford on horseback. These three-section carved wooden pillars were once a sign that this land had an owner, and were associated with the cult of the horse. Their upper part was intended for celestial horses, the middle one — for human ones, and the lower one — for the horses of the underworld. Here you will find many thousand-year-old ritual structures. Embrace the magic of these places and who knows, maybe the ancient spirits will grant you good luck in your hunt for the trophy Taimen!

Taimen Island

This large pebbled island in the middle of the river has been a favorite spot, for locals and visiting anglers alike, to anchor their boats. Here you can launch your favorite kayak and finally fish from the water. The center of the island is overgrown with low dense willows, among which several taller trees grow. The locals know that this place is frequented by the king of all salmon, incredible and huge — His Majesty The Taimen. And the successful catches of many anglers only confirm this knowledge!
8 unique fish species found only in the Selenge River
You’ll have to take on such rare and feisty opponents as Humpback Whitefish, Lenok, Baikal Omul and, of course, the Khan of all salmon — Taimen!

Please see the detailed Mongolia fish guide HERE.

Oh and please note that the bite of some fish is affected by the direction of the wind!
Unique Mongolian fauna:
The river is home to many rare nesting and migratory birds, herds of sheep roam, horses graze, and sometimes you can stumble upon nomadic yurts surrounded by camps with two-humped camels.

Oh, and we've added a new kind of weather to the game - snowfall!

Selenge River Fish: Detailed guide

Hi, Anglers!

We are happy to present you with a detailed guide to all the unique fish that you can find on the Selenge River!

The sharply continental climate holds the river in icy embrace for almost half a year, from November to April. Harsh winters and hot summers make early autumn an ideal time for fishing.

You’ll have to take on such rare and feisty opponents as Humpback Whitefish, Lenok, Baikal Omul and, of course, the Khan of all salmon — Taimen!
Siberian Taimen
Siberian Taimen is the largest representative of the salmon family. It can reach over 60 kilograms in weight and up to 2 meters in length. It inhabits the cold rivers of Siberia and Mongolia and never goes to sea. It mainly keeps near deep holes close to the shore. This species is active day and night. In cloudy weather, it is active throughout the day. The Whitefish is an excellent fighter, so get ready for some impressive resistance from it.
Adults feed at the river bottom on small mollusks, crustaceans, insects, their larvae, and eggs of other fish.
