FFXIV's Moonfire Faire is back next week with ice cream and polar bears

The annual return of the Final Fantasy XIV Moonfire Faire is upon us, and this year's summer celebration in one of the best MMOs on PC promises to bring with it tasty snacks, a new quest from regular host Mayaru Moyaru, and a rather large cuddly companion - all of which will kick off next week, August 13.

Final Fantasy XIV's Moonfire Faire 2021 brings back the annual limited-time summer event for Square Enix's popular MMO, which adds a new quest to complete, new items to earn, and often some surprises too. Last year's Moonfire Faire was shark-themed, with summery clothing items and a new emote to earn.

This year's event is a little different, as there aren't any unique clothing items to get and there seems to be less shark in general - although there is another large predator waiting instead. The main item on offer here is a horn to summon a big but rather cute Polar Bear mount, with the other rewards being an ice cream treat, corn on the cob, and a mask stall furnishing item.

FFXIV fan shows up to convention as Todd Howard, hands out copies of "Oblivion"

Final Fantasy XIV fans recently held an in-game convention called LunarCon to send off Shadowbringers and celebrate the upcoming Endwalker expansion. It had a Moogle troupe performance, some live theatre, and a fan dressed up as Todd Howard, who was handing out copies of Oblivion, sort of.

As Destructoid points out, you can find an item in the MMORPG called faded copies of "Oblivion". They're basically orchestrion rolls that work as jukebox tunes you can play in-game. You can unfade them with a bit of crafting magic, but the joke lands if you think of Howard handing out a dusty old Oblivion game disk.

The player behind the Todd Howard cosplay is a streamer called Tetenuko, and you've got to give it to them! They've got the turtle neck, leather jacket, haircut, and they've even gone to the trouble of levelling up their Todd to level 80, which is some commitment. If you're trying to recreate this look for yourself, you're going to want the Calfskin Rider's jacket. You can check out Tetenuko's stream here if you want some live FFXIV Todd in your life.

FFXIV devs change the Sage job icon after it triggers a phobia for some players

Today I learned that trypophobia, a fear or revulsion at certain patterns of holes or bumps, is a thing some people suffer from. The developers of Final Fantasy XIV also recently learned the same thing, as the icon for the new Sage job triggered trypophobia for some players. The developers have announced that they're changing the icon in time for the Endwalker release date.

"The severity of the reaction varies between people, and what triggers it in some may not do so in others," director and producer Naoki Yoshida says in the announcement. "But regardless of such differences, you have given us your earnest feedback, and there's still time to change things. Considering also the fact that job icons are prominently visible in the game, and that they also appear on merchandise, we've made the decision to redesign the sage icon."

The new design is pretty similar to the old one - it simply fills in the holes in three of the four nouliths which represent the Sage's magical abilities.
