FFXIV Endwalker release time - get your registration code ready after early access

December 6, 2021 Registration for the launch version of Final Fantasy XIV: Endwalker is open.

After one last delay, the Final Fantasy XIV Endwalker release date finally lands this week - though if you've been looking forward to the game, there's a decent chance you've already been playing in early access. If this is your first go on a new FFXIV expansion launch, you might not have known that you need another registration code to keep playing after the official launch.

Even if you're already playing Endwalker in early access, you'll need to input that additional registration code on the Mog Station to keep playing. Early access codes will cease granting access to the game on December 10 at 11:59pm PST (December 11 at 2:59am EST) for North American servers, or December 10 at 11:59pm GMT for European servers, as the devs explain.

You can input your registration code on the Mog Station as of today. You should receive the code via whichever retailer you purchased Endwalker from. On Steam, you'll find the code in the 'CD key' section of the game properties menu. If you purchased Endwalker through the Square Enix store, you should find your code on the order status page.

Final Fantasy XIV giving players a free week in apology for queues

Even before the official launch of Final Fantasy XIV's Endwalker expansion on Tuesday, the MMORPG's servers have been overloaded during its early access period for pre-orderers, leaving players in long queues to join. Oh, the perils of popularity! Sharing a status update over the weekend, game director Naoki Yoshida apologised again for the problems, and said they plan to give all active subscribers seven days of free game time.

Registering the Endwalker Expansion Pack

In order to play the Windows/Steam/Mac versions of Endwalker, you must redeem the registration code you received with your purchase. Even if you have registered a pre-order bonus code for early access, you will still need to redeem your Endwalker registration code to continue playing after the early access period. Additionally, you can now redeem registration codes using your smartphone on the newly revamped Mog Station.

Users on the PlayStation®5/PlayStation®4 versions will not need to register a separate code as they are automatically registered for the full version upon purchasing the expansion.

* Endwalker registration codes can be redeemed on Mog Station starting from Monday, December 6, 2021 at 7:05 a.m. (PST) / 15:05 (GMT).
* Please note that if you have a character logged out in an expansion area that you do not have registered to your account after early access ends then you will not be able to log in with that character until you redeem your full registration code.
* Early access will end December 10, 2021 at 11:59 p.m. with the region of your Square Enix account determining the time zone. North American accounts will adhere to (PST), European accounts will adhere to (GMT), and Japanese accounts will adhere to (JST).

FFXIV players will get a free week because the MMO is too popular

It's a big week for Final Fantasy XIV, with the long-awaited Endwalker expansion launching this weekend in early access and bringing new and returning players back in massive numbers - too many for the MMO to cope with, apparently, which is why Square Enix is giving away a free week of play to everyone struggling to get in right now.

While the official release date of the Endwalker expansion is still a few days away - it properly launches on Tuesday, December 7, in fact - the early access period has already started. As a result, Final Fantasy XIV has smashed all of its concurrent player count records on Steam as everyone heads in to check out the new Endwalker content.

Unfortunately, this popularity has come with a price, as director and producer Naoki Yoshida reports "an extremely large number of players" trying to access the MMO - and as a result, servers have been regularly hitting their login caps, queues have been lengthened dramatically, and there's been "an immense amount of network load which caused Worlds to go down".

FFXIV has smashed its all-time Steam player record and doubled it in six months

The early access release of Final Fantasy XIV: Endwalker has seemingly pushed the venerable MMO to new heights, as the game's all-time concurrent player record on Steam has been smashed for the second time this year - and the new count is more than double FFXIV's previous peak from June this year.

Despite being out for over ten years now, or eight as A Realm Reborn, Final Fantasy XIV has continued to go from strength to strength in 2021 alone. The MMO reported over 22 million registered players back in April and has repeatedly broken its concurrent player count record this year.

According to SteamDB, the new concurrent player count for Final Fantasy XIV today is 87,831 - beating the previous record of 67,148 on July 18. By the end of June, the peak was still around 41K, meaning the MMO has more than doubled its concurrent players in just under six months - and added over 20,000 players to its previous record. On December 2, the player count was 40,232.
