FFXIV update breaks the MMORPG on Steam Deck

Valve's Steam Deck is finally out, and apparently Gabe Newell loves to play Final Fantasy XIV on the system. Well, Valve's big boss won't be able to do so right now, because the latest 6.08 update for one of the best MMOs on PC renders Final Fantasy XIV unable to launch on the portable gaming PC.

As reported by user Dreamboum on ResetEra and verified by PCGamesN, you currently can't launch Final Fantasy XIV on the Steam Deck - it simply hangs on the game's logo with no way to progress further. This seems to be something to do with Square Enix making Steam account linking mandatory, as we reported last month.

In order to "further enhance account security and bolster fraud prevention measures", Final Fantasy XIV now links the player's Square Enix account with their Steam account. This update forces players on Steam to have Valve's client running alongside Final Fantasy XIV - which is causing enough problems on its own - but the new launcher doesn't appear to be compatible with the Steam Deck at all.

FFXIV villains won't just be bigger gods after Endwalker

FFXIV's villains have been a pretty diverse group, but as a decade of storytelling concluded in Endwalker, the stakes reached reality-cracking heights. The devs behind the MMORPG have already hinted that there's going to be a gentle story reset post-Endwalker, but in a new interview, director and producer Naoki Yoshida confirms that we shouldn't expect to immediately go back to fighting bigger and badder gods.

In a Famitsu interview, Yoshida mentions that previous Final Fantasy games have had players going against personifications of the Void itself. However, as Siliconera translates, Yoshida "doesn't think continuously inflating the scale of the story and making stronger bosses is a good idea".

As detailed in live letter 69, FFXIV's next patch is called Newfound Adventure, hinting that we'll be returning to the more traditional adventurer role that player characters began with in A Realm Reborn. Writer Natsuko Ishikawa says that the devs aren't entirely done with the Endwalker plot, however, and a "smaller-scale," "complementary" story will explore some of the expansion's events in further detail.

FFXIV patch 6.1 releases in mid-April

Final Fantasy XIV's next big update is called Newfound Adventure, and it's releasing in mid-April. The new titbits of information on FFXIV patch 6.1 come from the latest Live Letter from the Producer stream, where director Naoki Yoshida adds to what was previously revealed last month.

We see some artwork for the upcoming release during the stream that features the default Warrior of Light venturing out on a new journey. Yoshida explains that the team wanted the imagery to convey that we're going back to being an "adventurer", tossing in a joke that we won't be getting any new jobs - sorry, folks. While the Hydaelyn Zodiark arc wrapped up with Endwalker, there will be some form of continuation, even if we are starting something new. Square Enix didn't reveal anything more, though we did get a picture of Tataru sitting down with some lovely tea and muffins.

Yoshida also offers more side-content details for the FFXIV 6.1 patch cycle. We're getting additional role quests and a new beast tribe that will come in patch 6.15. The latter will involve completing two quests in Thavnair, though it'll arrive before the developers ditch the 'beast' terminology in patch 6.2.
