Colonel Sanders and a giant chicken are photobombing and confusing FFXIV players

A couple of Final Fantasy XIV fans are dressing up as a giant chicken and Colonel Sanders in order to photobomb players, run amok, and offer people KFC's delicious $5 fill-up box. This is why MMOs need to exist.

The main face behind these shenanigans is Reddit user _Vard_, who posts the various exploits of his FFXIV version of Colonel Sanders and the giant chicken man. Usually these two can't be seen in the same place at the same time, but when they do the inevitable often happens.

We've seen some truly creative players getting into all sorts of hijinks in Final Fantasy XIV - such as the fan who dressed up as Todd Howard and handed out faded copies of Oblivion at a convention - and it's always fun when something like this turns up, especially when they use FFXIV's emotes to their advantage. Witness this amazing moment for example, where the giant chicken glitches into a wall and is thrown out as their arch-nemesis.

Final Fantasy XIV goes down for eight hours of maintenance to help fix servers

Final Fantasy XIV has been struggling to keep up with its rapidly expanding popularity in recent months, and the devs are making some more changes to address the issues. But that's going to take some work, and thus servers are coming down for an extended maintenance period this evening. Nothing to do but wait for them to come back up, sadly.

FFXIV servers will go down across North America and Europe starting at 7pm PDT / 10pm EDT on September 27 (that's today), or 3am BST on September 28 (that's tomorrow). The companion app and Lodestone site will also be unavailable during maintenance - those will come back up on September 28 at midnight PDT / 3am EDT / 8am BST.

Access to FFXIV itself will be restored on September 28 at 3am PDT / 6am EDT / 11am BST. The devs say that during this maintenance work, they will be "implementing measures to address heavy server stress loads based on the result from the public server stress test we have held the other day".

Here's FFXIV's Dancer job being played with an Xbox Kinect

There have been plenty of gaming-based options to keep yourself fit during these socially distanced times, but, admittedly, Final Fantasy XIV isn't one of them. That's true for most of us except one popular controller modder who has managed to hook up an Xbox Kinect to the MMORPG.

Content Creator Louis 'Super Louis 64' Hamilton is using the camera-based tech to pull off what is, perhaps, the most immersive way of playing FFXIV's Dancer job. Hamilton explains on Twitter that he's managed to get the Kinect to pick up his dance moves and send those inputs into FFXIV. Each of the Dancer's steps has a motion control mapped to it, so the content creator has to dance away if he wants to buff his party. He also explains that he has to follow the instructions on his step gauge to complete the dance once he starts it. More importantly, Hamilton's outfit matches his Dancer, which is an attention to detail we appreciate.

This isn't the first time Hamilton has put a new spin on playing one of FFXIV's jobs, either, as he previously managed to play the card-based Astrologian job on a Yu-Gi-Oh! duel-disk controller. Each slot on the disk is assigned to a party member, and he got the cards to work through a heap of "conductive paint and wiring". Playing the Dancer with an Xbox Kinect and the Astrologian on a Yu-Gi-Oh! controller is equally impressive and looks equally as exhausting.
