FFXIV gets a 30-minute logout timer to tackle server congestion

Squeezing into Eorzea should be more manageable now, especially if you're playing on one of Final Fantasy XIV's EU or NA servers. Square Enix has introduced a new logout timer to hoof idle players out after a certain amount of time and has made some changes to ease the creation of new characters.

Final Fantasy XIV got its 5.58 patch this morning, so now you'll find that players who are inactive for more than 30 minutes are logged out "in an effort to ease server congestion" - Limsa Lominsa is about to feel a lot more barren. Square Enix is also swapping the status of some worlds to "Standard", which should ease the character creation process for you sprouts out there.

"The worlds on the North American/European data centres are currently extremely congested during peak hours," Square Enix says. "However, if we change the status to Congested World, it will be impossible to create new characters on most of the Worlds on these data centres. As a result, a large numbers of characters would be concentrating in fewer worlds. Therefore, all worlds under the North America/Europe data centres have been changed to Standard World."

FFXIV breaks another Steam record as EU servers reach capacity

Final Fantasy XIV has broken its concurrent player record on Steam - again - as players hopped on over the weekend to find servers at capacity - again. While previous challenges to play the popular MMORPG have centred on NA servers, the last weekend saw European players struggle to squeeze into Eorzea.

Players took to Reddit over the weekend to share that they couldn't play Final Fantasy XIV on European servers as they were all packed, with one free trial player saying they couldn't even queue. I checked it out myself on Sunday night BST time, but I couldn't queue up either as space was limited and my character data couldn't be found. Even now, as of the time of writing, eight EU servers are still filled up, leaving you with four to pick from if you're trying to create a new character. That said, you can still buy Final Fantasy XIV on Square Enix's European store, so that's something! We've reached out to Square Enix to see if the recent swell of players has any influence on its server plans, and will update this story if we hear back.

Final Fantasy XIV's player count continues to swell, too, which might not surprise you if you've been trying to squeeze into a server. As per SteamDB, the concurrent player count hit a new peak of 67,148 on Valve's storefront over the weekend. Just one week prior, the height was 58,046 players, which was a record at the time.

FFXIV's Make It Rain event returns - here's what you need to know

Final Fantasy XIV is reaching some of its greatest heights as we head toward the Endwalker release date, and a new wave of players is about to make it rain for the first time. Yes, the Make It Rain campaign returns soon, and if you're new to the game you're probably more than a little confused about what that means. Luckily, Square Enix has provided some details on the event.

Make It Rain begins on Monday, July 19 at 1am PDT / 4am EDT / 9am BST, and will last until Wednesday, August 11 at 8am PDT / 11am EDT / 4pm BST. During this time, you will earn 50% more MGP - a special in-game currency you get at the Gold Saucer, FFXIV's gambling and mini-game hub. You can spend that currency on special cosmetics at the Gold Saucer.

While a more productive MGP grind is the most important part of Make It Rain, there's also a special quest called The Great Horn Heist, available from Ollier at Ul'dah. (Look for him at the X:9.4, Y:9.2 coordinates at the Steps of Nald.)
