Final Fantasy XIV is still getting new hairstyles from a 2015 fan design contest

Final Fantasy XIV players are constantly looking for new ways to look good, and that means there's a constant desire for new hairstyles. The devs are obliging, at least occasionally, and one source of new looks has been the FFXIV Hairstyle Design Contest - an event that took place way back in 2015, just after the launch of Heavensward.

Patch 5.55 has just landed, and with it, a new hairstyle pulled out of the old design contest. Called Both Ways, it's collectable from Zadnor lockboxes and it's a cute little side ponytail without any gender restrictions - though it, uh, tends to look a bit more flattering on female characters. (Shout out to the Roegadyn dude rocking the style in the FFXIV Collect preview, though. Exquisite.)

So, yeah, the FFXIV Hairstyle Design Contest ran back in 2015, and promised to add the two grand prize winners - both male and female styles - to the game in patch 3.1. That happened on schedule, but ever since then, many of the runners-up, including today's new addition, have continued to be slowly added to the game, too.

Final Fantasy XIV's patch 5.55 inches closer to the release of Endwalker

Final Fantasy 14 continues to prep for the launch of the climactic Endwalker expansion. The latest update, patch 5.55, is apparently the last planned before the expansion's launch. Much like update 5.5, it adds additions to the main quest, more story in the Nier: Automata crossover quest, and a bunch of smaller tweaks and fixes.

FFXIV players are gathering to pay respects to Berserk creator Kentaro Miura

Fans are gathering en masse in Final Fantasy XIV to honour Berserk creator Kentaro Miura, who tragically passed away recently at the age of 54. From Mateus to Balmung (below), players have gathered on different servers to pay their respects by lining up in their Black Knight gear, as the influence of Miura's work can be seen in its appearance.

One particular player is going viral on Twitter for highlighting a line of Dark Knights in Ul'dah that spans from the Thaumaturge's guild to the entrance of the Steps of Thal. As of six hours ago, another line was starting to form. Other players are taking to the tweet to share celebrations from their servers, like this full circle over in Limsa Lominsa on the Behemoth server or another line forming in Ul'dah on the Midgardsormr server. Players are also handing out fires to lend some ambience to each celebration.

Word of Miura's passing reached Twitter earlier today through the Beserk Twitter page, with an open letter confirming that the manga artist passed on May 6, 2021, which it says was due to acute aortic dissection.

Female Hrothgar "will" come to FFXIV, but not in Endwalker

Final Fantasy XIV's incoming bunny boys have garnered a lot of attention since the big Endwalker blowout over the weekend - for good reason - but FFXIV's other big gender barrier is coming down, too. Female Hrothgar won't arrive in time for the Endwalker release date, but director and producer Naoki Yoshida has committed to bringing them to the game. We don't yet know when they'll arrive, but for context, here's the full quote.

"Of course, we did consider adding female Hrothgar as well," Yoshida says via translator at the FFXIV Fan Fest. "But again, we had our hands full with doing the male Viera, as well as the game. However - that said - we do plan to find an opportunity to add them in the future. We will be bringing the female Hrothgar. They will not come at the same time as the male Viera in 6.0, but it is coming.

"There was the option for us to wait until both were finished before releasing both of them at the same time, but we decided instead to release them one at a time, as they were finished."
