FF14 director Naoki Yoshida is "torn" over what to do with the Scions

The FF14 Dawntrail story puts the focus on newer characters as it attempts to reset the balance of power after Endwalker, placing its beloved Scions into more background roles. Most of the MMORPG's beloved cast members have already had their moment to shine, and so at Gamescom 2024 I ask game director Naoki Yoshida, best known as 'Yoshi-P,' whether he sees the likes of Thancred, Urianger, and the twins getting all-new story arcs in the future or if he's happy to let them be.

FF14 director Yoshida has big plans to build on Dawntrail's combat

FF14 Dawntrail might have divided opinions with its slightly lower-stakes story and the sideline role for its core cast, but there's one aspect everyone seems in unison on. The combat content in the MMORPG's new expansion - dungeons, trials, raids, savages, and extremes alike - has all been incredibly well received. It combines the inventive and flashy designs seen during Endwalker with more unique and challenging mechanics, and it's a ton of fun as a result. At Gamescom 2024, I sat down with game director Naoki Yoshida to ask about his plans for the upcoming patches, which include the FF11-adjacent alliance raid and new 24-player savage content.

FF14 director Naoki Yoshida doesn't like Dawntrail's best character

Of all the many pieces of FF14 Dawntrail, one of its most universally beloved parts is The Arcadion raid series. It takes perhaps the strongest element of the new Final Fantasy expansion - its combat content - and builds on it with a series of bold, dramatic characters reminiscent of pro wrestling, each with their own distinctive personality and a theme song to match. Given the chance to sit down with game director and producer Naoki Yoshida at Gamescom, then, I had to ask the most important question: which of the fighters is his favorite?

FF14 Dawntrail's extra server is shutting down after a flawless launch

FF14 Dawntrail's extra server is shutting down after a flawless launch

Final Fantasy 14 Dawntrail has had a shockingly trouble-free launch. The MMO's last expansion, Endwalker, had hour-long queue times and got so popular Square Enix had to stop selling it, but Dawntrail has been effortless in comparison. I played every day during the early access and full launch, with congestion hitting highs of just 100 players. Within minutes I was in the game, and the entire community enjoyed similar stories. This is because Square Enix took plenty of measures to make Dawntrail's launch a simple one, but now one of those features is going away.
