The Best Hearts of Iron 4 Mods

Of all the Paradox titles to deploy massive Mods libraries, none might compare with the whopping collection of over 20,000 Hearts of Iron IV Mods. Trying to pick and choose mods through this white-out of vast choices can be as daunting as Operation Barbarossa. Still, let's ride this tiger of selection and focus on four salient categories to encircle some of the best mods out there.

How to Mod Hearts of Iron 4

Modding has never been easier as the Steam Workshop literally makes adding a mod as easy as clicking the subscribe button on the mod's respective page. The mod will be automatically downloaded and will populate the mods section in HOI4's launcher. Here are some tips for first timers:

 • Check if the mod is up to date with the most recent patch for HOI4 (Currently 1.9 Husky). Once a new expansion comes out you may have to wait a few days, weeks, or even months for bigger mods, until the mod is updated. Thankfully, HOI4 will give you a warning if you're about to load a mod that isn't up to date. Also, each mod will tell you on the side menu if it requires certain DLC.
 • Still want to play that favourite mod of yours but HOI4's latest update ruins your save game? You can always roll back your HOI4 version to continue your campaign. Check the mod pages on Steam or the Paradox forums on how to do this since it might be different for each mod and version of the game. If all else fails, ask in the comments threads for instructions!
 • ...

Keep in mind that not all mods might be found on the Steam Workshop even if the vast majority are. Simply check the Paradox forum for their listed mods and follow their instructions on their respective threads to download them. While the kinds of mods people want to look for is up to them, let's go through some key categories that will help catalyze that modding experience that has become such a staple for Paradox games.

Hearts of Iron 4's 'End of a New Beginning' Mod is the Victoria 3 we need, but not the one we deserve

The year was 1870 and things were very much not going well for France. Getting into character as Napoleon III, I had previously embarked on a series of foreign adventures that quickly turned into calamitous humiliations: an uprising in Savoy, a pig headed Mexican adventure, an ill-advised conflict with Belgium over railroads or some such nonsense.

And now the Prussians were pushing into Alsace-Lorraine! Fearing a military coup against my flailing regime, I tacitly accepted Blanquist support for an assassination attempt against General MacMahon, one of my top field commanders. When the assassination failed, the General and his allies fled to Bordeaux to raise a rebellion in the southwest. It was only a matter of time before a flood of Prussians pushed through the fortified border, captured my unlucky emperor, and marched on Paris mere days after a government of national defense could be organized.

That was the high-water mark of my first campaign of End of a New Beginning (or, EoaNB), a mod for Paradox Interactive's WWII simulator Hearts of Iron IV. It's a project with an impressively ambitious mandate: extend the timeline in HoI4 to cover the period from 1857 to 2050. Although the mod is still very early in its development, it scratches a very particular itch. It offers the promise of a modern grand strategy experience set (if only partially) in the Victorian era, that age of industrialization and imperialism.

The results are in! - Community Achievement Contest
The results of the achievement contest are in!
Over the last couple of weeks we've been running a contest for the Hearts of Iron community to suggest and vote on a new achievement to be added to the game.

Voting has been open for a little over a week, and we had more than 31,000 votes cast on the shortlist of 10 achievement suggestions.

Here's the placings from 4th-10th:

In third place, with 5,506 votes is 'I am the Senate'!

The goal here was to achieve 100% support in both the Senate and the House as democratic USA.

In second place, with 5,765 votes is 'The chad Chad'

This achievement required you to take all of Africa as Chad.

Which means, with 6,343 votes, the winner of the contest is 'Finnish Him!'

The challenge here is to conquer all of the Soviet Union as Finland, without joining a faction.

We'll be adding this one into the game with our next major update

Chain of Command: Devs vs. the HOI4 Community: 1800-2000 CEST, 10/11/12 June
Everything you need to know
Tomorrow at 1800-2000 will be the first session of a special kind of Three Day War: It's the Devs vs. the Hearts of Iron IV community at large, spearheaded by four content creators.

Each team will be playing entirely within one nation: Imperial Germany for the Devs, and Democratic Britain for the Community team.

We've taken the 'democratic' element literally, electing a Virtual 'House of Commons' from across the HOI community to vote on and discuss the strategy for the UK. Some actions will be decided by what the house wants, not just the four players.

Read on below to find out about what the 'Virtual House of Commons' has been up to in preparation for the event.

There will be a two-hour session of the event streamed each day from June 10th - June 12, live over on our Twitch channel.

The Developer team is led by Kaiser Bratyn; he and his three supporting characters will be out to stop the community team in their tracks.

Playing the game for the HOI Community team is Taureor, Feedback Gaming, Mordred Viking, and PrussianPrince.

They are supported by the 'Virtual House of Commons'; an assembly of 32 people drawn from Mod communities, content creators and elected from steam and our social channels. They sat for the first time on Sunday, divided quickly into rival parties and began debating.

One of the first actions for the vHoC was to choose one of the content creators to take overall charge and become 'Prime Minister'. In a close fought battle, Taureor was victorious with support from the larger Commonwealth First Party.

The vHoC has since been busy debating and approving strategy, binding the hands of the players to enact their will. We'll show more of what has been happening at the start of the stream tomorrow.
