Community members! We are proud to announce Call to Arms - Gates of Hell: Airborne, which releases worldwide today.
Action
This campaign has an entirely new feel compared to what you’ve seen from us so far.
We have created a gripping storyline that starts on D- Day in Normandy, and takes you through some of the most iconic battles that were fought on the Western front. It will take you all the way through France, Belgium, the Netherlands and Germany, right to the very end of World War 2.
You will be introduced to an entirely new format, where your tactical information comes in the form of a video that plays during the mission every time the situation requires you to focus your attention on major objectives.
The battlegrounds will be recreations of the real ones of course, as you may have come to expect from us.
You will be able to play all 12 missions in Co-op as well; they each have room for four players.
Rendezvous with Destiny
The opening move in the campaign is the 101st Airborne Division, also known as the “Screaming Eagles”, who carried the ominous motto “Rendezvous with Destiny”.
We depict this famous unit in a total of 7 gripping missions, starting with the Pathfinder mission on D-Day.
This unit may be best known for its exploits in the wintery Ardennes when they stubbornly defended Bastogne and refused to surrender. Their commander, General McAuliffe, famously told the German negotiator and commander, “NUTS” instead of surrendering. However, many of the other missions will have a familiar ring to them, with lots of “Easy” company action in the mix.
All the way
The 82nd Airborne goes into action on D-Day as well, where their motto “All the way” is applied on St. Mère- Église first. The action that follows is as iconic as anything; and while a number of their most famous battles centered on bridges, they get to close the campaign deep inside of Germany at the crossing of the Elbe river.
The first bridge the 82nd took was the one at La Fière, helping secure St. Mère- Église against German counter attacks; the second one, at Nijmegen (during operation Market Garden), resulted in a battle of heroic proportions as well, which is commemorated in a memorial that was erected near the bridge after the war, by the Dutch population.
A dedication
Last September, we were shocked by the loss of our friend Trevor Hackbardt, who worked on Gates of Hell as a historical researcher and as a moderator. His contribution to our project was a significant factor in the production of the “Liberation” DLC, and if you look at any of the 3d models from that DLC you should remember it was probably Trevor’s photo database - put together in hundreds of hours of work - that helped us get the details right.
Barbedwire Studios dedicates the release of the “Airborne” DLC to his memory.
His image will grace the game’s loading screen for months to come. Rest in peace, Trevor.
Quality of Life update
We have been running the Open Beta for the QoL update, which we previously announced. With this update, we improve performance, provide bug fixes and a lot of other additions and improvements that make the game one step better.
There are also some new US and German units that you can make use of in Conquest and Multiplayer. The Changelog is over 200 entries long!
Up next: The British
As we have announced before, we will now focus on developing the faction for the British Commonwealth.
This faction will be depicted by means of its actions and exploits on the Western front, starting early in the conflict and including late war action.
Development has been underway for quite some time, and we will announce its estimated release date as soon as we can. But for now, let’s focus on what’s new today!

This discount only lasts for two weeks after release. Don’t miss out on this chance, get the “Airborne” DLC today:

QoL Update Inbound

Community members! We are getting close to the release of Call to Arms - Gates of Hell: Airborne, which will be released on October 17th.
At the same time, we will also release a “Quality of Life” update, which will improve many things. This update will be available in open beta for all players to try.
This free update comes to all players, regardless of the “Airborne” release.
Performance upgrade
We have managed to address one of the community's main concerns after we released the “Liberation” DLC about the performance of the DLC-specific maps. One cause was found in its buildings, which were optimistically modeled with several more segments and parts than were ever done before for an RTS of these characteristics. We took the time to go back and rework them; this greatly helps the performance of all types of rigs. We also identified further ways to improve the game engine handling of buildings so that you will notice a performance improvement not just on Liberation maps but for the whole game.

HD Link

The optimization improvement will be implemented with the QoL update; it is almost guaranteed to result in a better FPS rate on Liberation maps, depending on the number of buildings on the map you are playing on. The amount of improvement depends greatly on each processor and graphic card combination. Our team and closed beta testers have observed improvements that range anywhere from an additional 10 fps to 30 fps on the Liberation maps. Performance gains will vary according to your PC specs, game graphical settings, and the specific map.
Other highlights
This update includes a performance upgrade, but there’s more to it. As you may know, we read everything the community tells us, and this update is - in part - based on feedback you have provided over time.
These are some of the highlights:
 • Optimization of “Liberation” buildings, as explained above
 • Added bushes and trees to be hidden when you are in 3rd person while the camera is in the bush/ tree
 • Fixed many reported issues with single-player missions
 • Added new mortar trench as a buildable fortification for engineers
 • Some of the balancing suggestions that our multiplayer balancing group approved.
 • New ballistics tool for the editor, accessible via console command “ui_armorDisplay”
 • Fixed weapons with minimum bursts (ex. rocket artillery) to not auto shoot when recrewing after the barrage was interrupted; now it reloads the weapon instead
 • Fixed panzerfaust attack orders on a vehicle (that it is not currently facing) to cause AI to fire too early or at a weird angle
 • Fixed situations where trying to throw a grenade over an object that is too tall to throw over would cause an endless movement loop
 • Fixed Grenades thrown over objects often collide with objects and bounce back (not 100% fixed by should happen much less frequently)

These are just a few; besides the performance upgrade, the entire list has around 200 entries! We will publish the changelog in the usual place when the update goes live.
Open Beta
We will run an Open Beta for the QoL update for a few days before it is released. To participate in this short open beta, you can right-click on the game in your Steam library, select “Properties”, select the Betas tab, and then select “Open beta”. We will make the update live at approximately the time of the Airborne release.
You can reverse the process at any time to return to the live version; you don’t need to do anything when the update goes live.
So that’s the short description of what’s coming to all Call to Arms - Gates of Hell players in the next few days, the moment we release the “Airborne” DLC.

Developer Blog #151

Community members! We previously announced that the Airborne DLC will be released on October 17th. In this blog, you can learn about a special, limited-time release offer we plan to give the community. We also shed some light on performance improvements we intend to bring to the game.
The focus of this blog, however, is the opening mission of the Airborne DLC campaign.
Pathfinders
The storyline of the Airborne DLC campaign opens with the 101st Airborne jumping into action in the early hours of June 6th, 1944.
They were the very first US unit to be paradropped on this day.

The paradrop operation was split into two missions, code-named “Albany” and ”Boston”. These two missions would drop a total of over 13.000 paratroopers, after which a subsequent wave of glider aircraft, numbering over 1.100, would add almost 4.000 more airborne assault troops.
Since the first (para drop) wave involved well over 800 aircraft operating in darkness, air traffic was going to be very dense, and it was going to be absolutely essential to offer the pilots some form of guidance to the six drop zones.

Source: Historical Division, Department of the Army, 1947

So, about 30 minutes ahead of everyone else, the pathfinders of the 101st were to be dropped over France; their very first task was to set up three “Eureka” ground-based transponder beacons to guide in the main paradrop wave of aircraft.
Without these, the entire operation would be in jeopardy right from the start. The pressure to accomplish this mission could hardly have been higher.
The mission in Gates of Hell
In the Gates of Hell mission, you will obviously be tasked with setting up the Eureka beacons. You will need to find the beacons first - as quickly as possible - and set them up to guide the main wave in.
However, as is expected, there are Germans in the area, and you will need to deal with them.
Since you’ve landed in France, there’s also a chance of running into the local population; you’ll need to deal with them and make sure you make the right decisions quickly because this will significantly influence the outcome of the mission. This makes for an entirely new and unusual experience.

Setting up the beacons is one thing; dealing with constantly changing circumstances is another! You can’t expect to be left alone by the enemy; after all, the tremendous noise and fireworks associated with the massive formation of aircraft passing overhead obviously have been noticed.

So, in true paratrooper style, you will have to deal with many different situations, and just like it happened in real life, you’ll have to adapt to these new situations swiftly. While you improvise, adapt, and overcome, the mission progresses quickly, with something unexpected lying around each corner.
The new style of tactical instruction videos will tell you about the many challenges and objectives.
These could be anything, but we’re not going to spoil them all since that would only take away from immersion!

So there you have it; the campaign opener, titled “Pathfinders,” will pay homage to the 101st Airborne “Screaming Eagles” bearing the brunt of the airborne landings, contributing hugely to the success of the Normandy landings in June 1944.
You will be able to play all 12 missions in single-player or co-op with four friends.
Can you achieve all the objectives of this mission?
Performance update
We have managed to address one of the main concerns that the community expressed when we released the “Liberation” DLC, the performance of the maps. The main culprit were the buildings, which we optimistically modeled with quite a few more segments and parts than was ever made before. We took the time to go back and rework them with a slightly less ambitious goal, which should not feel significantly different on the visuals but greatly helps the performance for all the rigs.
The improvement will be implemented in the next game update. It should get you a very nice jump in FPS.
Important notice for modders
For modders of Call to Arms - Gates of Hell it is important to note that “French barn 01” was re- exported entirely; it was also structurally renamed in the sub- files.
This means that on all current maps, when loaded, the barn will appear all sorts of jacked up. In order to fix this modders/ mappers are urgently advised to open their maps, and replace the barn with itself, and to re- save the map.
This is a case similar to when we advised you to re-export your mods when we added tags. We don’t foresee us ever needing to do this again with any building, but for this one it was necessary.
QoL Update
We will release a Quality of Life update roughly at the same time we release the “Airborne” DLC.
This update will contain a number of important improvements, such as a performance upgrade, but there is much more to it. We will specify this QoL update in the next few days, in a separate announcement.
Airborne Release
Special announcement

Community members!
Exactly 80 years ago today, Operation Market Garden started.
To commemorate this iconic operation, we will announce the planned release date for Call to Arms- Gates of Hell: Airborne!
We also take a look at the historical background of what - at the time - was the biggest airborne operation in history.
80 years
On September 17th, 1944, Operation Market Garden got under way. Expectations were high; if this operation would achieve its goals, it was more or less generally assumed that the war would be over soon, maybe even before Christmas. As it turned out, that was not to be; a number of setbacks, such as the presence of the 9th and 10th SS Panzer Divisions, British field radios not working, and the distance between the Arnhem drop zones and the bridge contributed to the failure to capture the Rhine bridge.
Ever since there has been a lot of debate; was Market Garden a success or a failure?
Bernard Montgomery, who had proposed the operation, called it a 90% success.
However, since the key bridge at Arnhem was not taken, the Rhine still formed a formidable defensive line for the Germans. When the operation was called off, the chance to end the war by Christmas was definitely gone.
Aftermath
The consequences of Market Garden were severe. Even when the British Paras had been evacuated from the Arnhem area, the corridor around “Hell’s Highway” was still hotly contested. Fighting continued without pause for weeks.
Arnhem itself was looted bare and set on fire by the Germans during the battle, and it remained a ghost town until the war’s end.
The Germans also halted river traffic from the agricultural East Netherlands to the West Netherlands, which caused a famine that cost the lives of an estimated 20.000 Dutch citizens during the following winter.
The supplies for the operation had to be replenished by road, all the way from Normandy. Because the British hadn’t captured the north side of the Scheldt estuary, the port of Antwerp was of no use to the Allies yet. The criticism of General Montgomery’s strategy was mainly about the fact that the Scheldt estuary should have been taken before considering an operation like Market Garden, to ensure a much better supply situation.
Remembrance
The paratroopers involved had all gone above and beyond the “normal” call of duty, and had suffered severe casualties. For instance, the 82nd Airborne took horrendous casualties when crossing the Waal river at Nijmegen.
At the location they chose to cross the river, a monument was erected to commemorate their heroics, as you may remember from our previous blog.
The Market Garden paratroopers are all considered real heroes by the population of the Netherlands. Every year, in September, all of them are invited to join the veterans’ parade, where the Dutch people honor the veterans and remember the fallen.
Airborne Release Date
With all of the history and heroics of these Airborne troops in mind, today is a perfect day to announce the release date for Call to Arms - Gates of Hell: Airborne. If you want to re- live some of the most brutal and iconic battles by the US 82nd and 101st Airborne Divisions, you can do so from October 17th!
Obviously there’s more to the Airborne DLC than Operation Market Garden; in fact, it starts in Normandy. After Operation Market Garden, it takes you through the Battle of the Bulge, and into Germany proper.

If you haven’t yet, wishlist Airborne today:
The next faction
Meanwhile, as we announced in our previous blog, we are developing content for the British Commonwealth. This DLC, the name of which will be announced shortly, will contain Western Front action. After the release of “Airborne” we will show you more.
This development is in the hands of one part of the team, while the other part is at work to improve the game and chase bugs as usual.
We always schedule new faction DLCs to follow non- faction DLCs like Airborne. That has been our method from the very moment we released “Ostfront” in 2021.
Did you know?
• “Airborne” will contain voice cameos from a handful of (Youtube) Content Creators
 • It will also contain voice acting and narration from modern day veterans
 • The British Commonwealth DLC has already been in development for nearly a year

That’s it for now, thanks for stopping by and we’ll see you on the battlefield!
