Stardew Valley may get more updates: "there's always room for improvement"

It's possible that Stardew Valley may yet receive a 1.6 update, or at least further updates after last month's minor patch to fix some long-standing bugs. In a new interview with developer Eric 'ConcernedApe' Barone, he says that - despite moving on to Haunted Chocolatier - "there's always room for improvement" on Stardew Valley.

Last month, Barone released a couple of updates for Stardew Valley - versions 1.5.5 and 1.5.6. While the developer teased new content with the earlier patch, when 1.5.6 finally showed up it only had a few minor fixes to the game's mod support - welcome, for sure, but not what players were hoping for.

Beyond that, it's been over a year since the release of Stardew Valley's substantial 1.5 update and players were probably hoping for a 1.6 version to offer something similar. Now, in an interview with Vgkami on Haunted Chocolatier, Barone suggests it might still happen - but he currently doesn't have any plans either way.

This Stardew Valley mod makes managing your inventory way easier

It's probably safe to say that, while it's a useful and challenging gameplay mechanic, inventory management is not always the most thrilling aspect of an otherwise great game. As Stardew Valley fans know well, managing slots crammed full of goods is an important part of growing a flourishing farm, but it can take some work to get all your stuff where it needs to be. Handily, a new Stardew Valley mod helps to make it a breeze.

Creator gaussfire's aptly named Convenient Inventory mod adds some new features to the player's inventory, which makes keeping on top of it all a lot easier. As the modder describes, managing your backpack full of materials and other goodies becomes a bit of a repetitive process after a while: "open chest, deposit items, close chest, open chest, deposit items, close chest, open chest, deposit items, close chest..." and so on. But, the modder proffers a handy alternative: "What if you could stow away all the items taking up space in your backpack, instantly, while keeping the important ones?"

The mod adds a new feature that lets you quick stack to nearby chests, which shows up as a new button in the inventory UI. Hit that, and you'll send your items to - yep, you guessed it - chests lying around within a certain range (assuming they've got capacity). It's not clear what this range is by default, but it seems the mod's config options let you set this yourself in terms of number of tiles from the player character.

It remains to be seen whether Stardew Valley will ever get a 1.6 update, and for now developer Eric 'ConcernedApe' Barone is building the upcoming Haunted Chocolatier. But patches to Stardew Valley are still coming, and the latest "minor update" promises fixes to some long-standing bugs, including improvements for users of multiple monitors.

Stardew Valley 1.5.6 ensures that "the game now remembers and restores on the last used monitor" on multi-monitor setups. A "few gameplay inconsistencies that have been around for a long time" have been fixed, too, including an issue where hoed dirt would decay under forage items, and one where indoor grass would die when winter came around.

You can see the full patch notes on the official site. Barone previously teased the possibility of new content for 1.5.6, but it looks like those new features fell through (unless they're secret changes not noted in the patch notes, I guess). The big focus for updates right now seems to be back-end changes to improve mod support.

1.5.6 -- Minor Update

Hey everyone, 1.5.6 is out now.

It's a small patch that fixes a few bugs, adds a "quality of life" feature for multi-monitor users, and addresses a few gameplay inconsistencies that have been around for a long time (i.e. the hoe dirt under mature forage crops de-spawning, and indoor grass dying in winter)

- On multi-monitor setups, the game now remembers and restores on the last used monitor.
- Potential fix for a random crash that could occur at the end of the night.
- Fixed a bug that prevented the various farm types' wallpapers and floorings from applying when starting a new game.
- Fixed a bug where pressing ESC to dismiss the level up screen would dismiss the menu without applying the level up, causing it to reappear every night.
- Hoed dirt no longer decays under forage items on the farm. This ensures that dirt under freshly grown seasonal forage seeds can no longer disappear randomly.
- Grass placed indoors no longer dies when seasons change to Winter.
- Fixed being unable to harvest Tea Saplings placed on Garden Pots on Ginger Island.
- Fixed an issue where the Z key would be unbindable after resetting controls to the default.
- Fixed map screenshots not functioning on Linux.
- Updated Steamworks.NET to 20.0.0.

As always, thanks for playing Stardew Valley!

- Fixed a crash when starting the game in Compatibility mode on MacOS.

Very minor update 1/18/2022 3:00PM PST:

- Fixed a minor typo where the text when being knocked out in the volcano was flipped between the Korean and English localizations.
- Fixed exclusive fullscreen mode being off-center/sized incorrectly when Window's zoom is not set to 100% on non-compatibility branch builds.
- Added a failsafe to the whe maximize/windowed toggle button on the title screen to clamp to the upper-right corner of the current display in fullscreen mode.
- Hotfixes are now properly be reflected in the ingame version number.

- Minor change to removed the numerical hotkey displays along the top of the inventory screen menu when playing on a controller.
