Team Fortress 2 just hit an all-time concurrent player peak

Team Fortress 2, a multiplayer game that came out way back in 2007, just saw its all-time concurrent player count record broken as more than 150,000 scouts, soldiers, heavies, spies, and the rest swarmed the servers Friday. According to SteamDB, it's Team Fortress 2's best day ever from a player count perspective, exceeding the previous high of 147,360 set last December.

At 19:50 UTC June 25, Team Fortress 2 had 151,253 concurrent players in-game. What's driving the surge isn't entirely clear - a new patch arrived this week, which added the new Summer 2021 cosmetic case and a few new tools for managing kick votes and other administrative tasks on servers.

There's some disagreement about what's actually going on in Team Fortress 2, as it turns out. Some players are reporting surprisingly bot-free experiences in the team FPS game, while others are convinced that the surge is primarily attributable to bot creators figuring out some new method of circumventing whatever anti-bot measures have been added in the latest update.

Team Fortress 2's longest update drought ever has ended

Valve's agèd multiplayer game Team Fortress 2 has finally ended its longest stretch without an update. A patch arrived this week that adds some new tools to help keep bots out of matches, and players seem pretty pleased with it so far. It includes the Summer 2021 cosmetic case, some stability and security enhancements, and some new settings for matches.

The new Summer 2021 cosmetic case includes 18 community-created items and six new community-made unusual effects. A helpful redditor has assembled a list of links to the Steam Workshop pages for all of these, which include a nice fishing outfit for the Pyro and some lovely glowing halos as Unusual effects.

A few new settings added in this update make it harder for bots to disrupt matches. There's now a cooldown before players can create a vote when they join a match that's already in progress, and whoever is running the server can set variables for how long that cooldown lasts and for a grace period that starts at the beginning of the match, after which the cooldown will kick in.
