Wartales is out now!





Attention Mercenaries!

We are proud to announce that Wartales has now entered into Early Access and is available to buy now on Steam!


Well, what a whirlwind of a few months it has been!

From the announcement of Wartales earlier this year, to the mad dash to pull together a demo for the Steam festival, to the recent closed beta and final stretch of develoment before release, to right here, right now, orchestrating the release of our FIFTH game as a company...




First off, we'd like to thank everyone who joined us on our journey from the very start with the demo earlier this year, to have had such a positive reception and to see a community of dedicated and helpful players begin to form around the game at such an early stage was incredibly ecouraging for all of us here at Shiro.

Secondly, a massive thank you to everyone who took part in the recent closed Beta, your feedback and suggestions have been incredible and it is largely down to you that we are now able to release Wartales into Early Access with pride.



A lot of content and features have been added since the demo and the beta, and throughtout Early Access we will continue to develop, expand, iterate and improve every aspect of the game, alongside all of you with your help and support.

New regions, units, items, quests, features, functions, mini games and much more are well underway internally, and will be making their way to the game over time, and we can't wait to hear what all of you think! And we are all ears for any ideas and suggestions you might have that will help us realise the best possible version of Wartales.



There is no firm roadmap available at this time, as we’re still finalising a lot of our plans and working out the logistics in terms of timing but this is something we are discussing internally and hope to share with you all very soon.

Night of the living Draugar




Welcome to our spooky special event where you will be able to make battle in the terrifying new Draugrheim biome.

In this temporary game mode, you will have to conquer your fears in the land of the living dead and face terrible new (eight-legged) creatures roaming the land of Northgard.

Vikings, it is time to take back what is yours in the Night of the Living Draugar.



However, if you feel like some of those new creatures have more legs than you can tolerate, you can activate an arachnophobia mode in the options menu.







Finish a game of Northgard in the new Draugrheim game mode (if you dare) and earn a new Town Hall skin. You can claim it in Expeditions.












Clans Starting Bonuses:

New: Trade routes with the homeland are available and earn more Krowns. Gain +10% Krowns from merchents and sailors -> +15% Krowns production.

New: Earn Fame by scouting Neutral Factions and enemy Town Halls.

New: Great Trades Routes -10% discount.

New: You can spend Krowns to accelerate the arrival of new villagers in your Town Hall.




Mercenaries from Homeland - Fame 200

You can send Mercenary raids from your Harbors to raid beaches but not on tiles with a Town Hall. Mercenary raids can be upgraded in the Forge.

Trade routes with the homeland is available and earn more Krowns.

New: You can assign 3 more Sailors on a Harbour with a Lighthouse




Sea Supremacy - Fame 500

You can send Mercenary raids on zones with a Town Hall.

You can assign 3 more Sailors on a Harbor with a Lighthouse.

New: Mercenary Raids will use Fire Javelins, damaging buildings upon raiding.




Negotiators

Replaces Ship Building -> Mining Efficiency.

Gain +2 Krowns production and +30% forging speed.




Exotic Goods

Harbor, Trading Post and Marketplace produce 1 Happiness (2 if upgraded).




Others changes:

Raid upgrades take 3 -> 6 months to forge (with 1 smith).

New: You no longer need to activate the faster recruitment of Mercenaries Raids and it no longer changes the raids' cost.







Howl of the Sea Master - Fame 500

Chance to transform an enemy military unit into a spectral warrior has been reduced.




Endless Tide

Reduces the cost of military units by 20% => 15%




Knowledge From Beyond

Reveals the position of all neutral factions.

Trade routes with neutral factions give +2 Lore per merchant and +20% Krowns and relationship.







Supplies - Fame 200

Supplies now arrive as soon as Fame 200 is reached instead of at the new year. Resources are then received every 12 months from the first reception.

Each year a boat brings you +50 Food, Wood and Krowns, +25 Lore and +5 Stone for each completed year, and again at the start of every subsequent year.

Known issue: The description of Supplies appears in English. Translations for all languages will arrive as soon as possible.







Spoils of War

Gain some Krowns for each enemy unit killed.

Eradicate a faction, neutral or clan, earns 50 Military XP.







Mask of Gullinbursti

Produces +10 => +6 Food.

You can pay 150 Lore to summon one GiantBoar. It is controllable as long as it is not in combat.







Guerilla Tactics

Permanently increases your military units' attack power by +1% for any unit slain or lost in enemy territory (30% max).

Enemies clans relations are also affected when you are fighting a neutral faction.








All sailors produce +100% Fame.

The tech Knowledge from Beyond borrowed from the Clan of the Kraken with stolen lore and Mimirsbrunn no longer produced +100% Kröwns with trade routes.








  • Fixed difficulty noted as “extreme” in saves and as “hard” in the information window.
  • Fixed fame notifications not displayed for client.
  • The AI will now avoid moving its spectral warriors into ally territory.
  • Fixed merchants constantly stopping work when assigned after thralls to a trading post.
  • Fixed the display of ore production by slaves.
  • The free lore stone obtained with the knowledge "erudition" will still be free even after cancelling it's construction.
  • Texts have been revised to be gender neutral.
  • Torfin's throne produces +2 Lore which was not displayed. It is now.
  • Option “map special” from Ragnarok has been removed. This was irrelevant as the special map could be replaced by a volcano.
  • When Kobolds spread to a tile with an object (i.e. ruins), the name display of that building/object will no longer turn into "Kobold Hamlet".
  • Fixed wrong icon of the relic “Edda of Vor” displayed in the player list.
  • Fixed description text of Mask of Gullinbursti relic. It cost 150 Lore to summon the Giant Boar (not 200).
  • Fixed villagers carrying hammers in longships in story mode.
  • Fixed "High tide" which sometimes did not generate fish on lakes.
  • Fixed broken food graphic displayed in end-game.
  • THE WISE ONE from the clan of the Lynx, and Torfin’s Throne no longer produce Lore in the conquest mission “Imported Knowledge”.
  • Fixed buildings that were burning after a raven raid. They stop burning after being repaired.
  • Fixed warchief portrait hiding text in fame notification.
  • Fixed Torfin’s shadow not attacking Wyverns and defense towers.
  • Fixed several issues with neutral factions. When dwarves or myrkalfar attack an enemy clan, they continue to advance from tile to tile until they eliminate the clan or are killed. Previously, they could stagnate on a tile and cause colonisation issues, this is no longer the case.
  • You can no longer see enemy unit status (starving, freezing…) after using Warcry.
  • The relic Gefjun’s jar now summons new villagers on the town Hall as intended.
  • In the conquest mission greed’s price, the knowledge “Wool trade” no longer produces Krowns.
  • Clicking on the notification of a built relic no longer leads to the player who built it if you have not scouted him.
  • In the gem cutter conquest mission, trading gems now affect relations.
  • Building an offering well near an eradicated neutral faction is no longer possible.
  • The unit type icons in the healer hut are updated when healed units change jobs.

Kröwns and Daggers is another big free upgrade for Northgard out now

Kröwns and Daggers expands the ties between clans while also adding in a whole new neutral faction to Northgard.

Hey everyone!

We are very happy to finally present to you the sixth major free update to Northgard, Kröwns and Daggers, available now!

The Kröwns and Daggers update brings a host of new features, gameplay additions and even a new neutral faction to Northgard.

With an increased focus on diplomacy, and a complete overhaul of how you develop and maintain relations with your fellow factions, Kröwns and Daggers is easily one of our most ambitious content updates yet!

The relation system with neutral factions has been reworked. Each faction now presents 4 relation statuses offering new rewards and risks depending on how you treat the faction.

All new interactions with Neutral factions and Clans are reunited in a new Diplomacy screen.








A new building is available to improve your relations with the neutral factions: the Offering Well.









The Dwarves are joining the Northgard party!

Dwarves, well known for their mining prowess, will obviously have access to and supplies of many treasures and precious resources but come too close, and you might regret it...

On the other hand, they might lend you a helping hand if you manage to gain their trust.









Interactions with rival clans are evolving:

While scouting, the borders of territories under the Fog of War are now colorless.




By sending your scouts to spy on an enemy's Town Hall, you may access new information like their Lore-tree or resource stocks.




In addition, notifications regarding the other clans now feature the portrait of their Warchiefs.












Based on the information you’ve gathered, you can now declare an enemy clan as your Rival, for a gain, but at a cost:
  • Town twinning boosts your population growth, but it also increases the population growth of your Rival.
  • Eavesdropping gains you more Lore based on how much Knowledge your Rival has discovered that you have not.
  • Target a Clan with less Fame than you with Bullying and you will gain more Defense against them, but if they come out on top, they get significantly more Fame in return.
  • Manhunt places a target on your Rival’s back by hitting them with an Attack malus outside their territory. In exchange, they get a bonus as long as they stay within their territory.






To establish this Rivalry, a new building is available: the Emissary Lodge and corresponding unit, the Emissary.











New competitive events for you to take part in against the other clans for a reward.













Kill 3 enemy Dwarves Champion in a single game.




Win a game with every started neutral faction alive and not befriended by anyone.




Eliminate 3 different neutral factions in a single game.




Befriend 3 different neutral factions in a single game.




Eliminate 5 neutral factions after they were befriended by another clan.




Send a scout to spy on 3 different clan's Townhall in a single game.




Maintain for 2 years "Eavesdropping" Rivalry with a clan doing the same with you.




Eliminate a clan targeted by your "Bullying" Rivalry.




Be the target of 3 Manhunt Rivalry at the same time.




Win a competitive event in which all clans have participated.









  • Player names are now displayed in the chat, but they are colorless until scouted (and so are the borders).
  • When a player pauses the game, the player name is displayed to all players.
  • When a player ends the pause, the name of that player is also displayed.


  • Stats for Squirrel Meals have been added.
  • In Food stats, the Feasts are now indicated.
  • In Forge stats, the Unit forged is now indicated.


Coinage (and similar Knowledges that unlock trade routes):
  • Coinage no longer unlocks trade routes.
  • Trade routes are available since the beginning of the game.
  • Trade routes without Coinage are less effective than before
  • Knowledges replacing Coinage in the Lore Tree also benefit from the trade route bonus "Your trade routes produce +100% Kröwns".
Erudition:
  • The first Carved Stone is free. Your next carved stone is free.
Knowledge from Beyond:
  • Reveals all neutral factions. Reveals the position of all neutral factions (without removing the fog of war).
Lore cost:
  • Lore cost for knowledges has been readjusted.


  • New unit: Emissary.
  • New building: Lodge of Emissaries.
  • New building: Offering Well.


  • The Dwarven Prospectors.
  • The Myrkálfar's Levy.
  • Ceremonial Bonfire.


  • Neutral factions attack behavior reviewed to fairer.
  • Jötnar now charges enemy units when attacked on their own territory.
  • All factions except Jötnar now accept Wood via trade routes.
  • Every clan of the Dragon in a game now has the same Dragon Essence gauge bonuses.
  • Rumor mongering was reworked to match with the new neutral factions’ behaviors.
  • The detailed flux of your resources (the tooltip over a resource stock) now displays the flux as a decimal value. Meaning you can know precisely how much Stone / Iron you’re extracting and trading.
  • Scouting speed is reduced by 20% in enemy territory.
  • With the shortcut E you could lose the selection of Kaija by selecting/deselecting her army. This feature was removed.
  • Eradicating a neutral faction no longer gives military XP (eliminating a member of the neutral faction will still provide military XP).
  • Eliminating a player no longer gives you military XP.
  • Several SFX have been added.







  • Wounded debuff on Units is now correctly removed when healed.
  • Wounded debuff only applies once under 80% of health.
  • Oskoreia is no longer canceled when Mieliki is attacked.
  • Achievement “Let me borrow this” is correctly unlocked.
  • Happiness detail now shows the entire list of entries impacting happiness and not just the X first elements.
  • Multiple bugs about achievements/expeditions not triggering upon completion.
  • Fixed value display for Knowledge “value of great deeds”.
  • Fixed Snake’s relic Stealth ability.
  • Fixed Trading Caravan. Relations with neutral factions improved 20% faster as intended. (Instead of 10 before correction).
  • Fixed victory condition cut-off in story mode.
  • Fixed trade with the clan of the Boar. As the Boar, you can no longer trade with another clan.
  • AI of the clan of the squirrel can no longer share a meal with an ally before obtaining “A Helping Hand” ( Fame 200).
  • Icon displayed after a loot no longer cancels a mouse click.
  • The link to the "How to mod" button has been fixed.
  • Fixed the Bodyguard from “Tactician” Military Path sometimes no longer following his warchief.
  • Fixed cursor issue. You could sometimes no longer target an enemy unit with your military units.
  • Fixed console spam causing lags in modded games.
  • Fixed achievements in the expedition menu. Some of them were unlocked in the game but not on steam. It was the game that considered them unlocked too early.
  • In the lobby, the dropdown list no longer closes automatically when you’re selecting a clan and another player choses at the same time. The dropdown list still closes if you’re selecting a color or team at the same time as another player.
  • Myrkalfar no longer stall and teleport when they attack on server.
  • Fixed army selection with ‘E’ and a giant Boar.










All the new Kröwns and Daggers features are not scriptable for mods at this time. This will be possible very soon.



A few sentences in the Rivalry window will only appear in english. They will soon be available in all of the supported languages.

Today, we’re releasing a yet another MASSIVE balance patch that brings a plethora of changes to Northgard and each of the clans that inhabit these mysterious lands.

With this update, we've made a number of changes and additions, heavily balancing the clans based on your wonderful feedback over the last few months and fixed a multitude of issues that have been reported in the time since our last major update!

Recipe
  • Fish fillets :
    • +1 month cost: 200 vegetables 200 fishes
    • Mining / Forging Bonus 25% / 50% / 75% / 100% => 50% / 75% / 100% / 125%
Fishes were accumulating too much. We want you to use meals other than Venison & Ratatouille and Meat Stew.



Prices of meals in Food is increased depending on the number of clan you share the meal with:
  • 1 clan : population x 2 food
  • 2 clans : population x4 => x 6 food
  • 3 clans : population x 6 food
  • 4 clans : population x 8 food


Clan's Description

Special Squirrel Win Condition → Special Fame Victory for the clan of the Squirrel is removed and replaced with a new Fame 1500.



Fame 200 - A Helping Hand

( +5 Fame per player affected by a meal)



Fame 500 - Plot of the Thrones

You gain Fame based on your extra population compared to your most populous opponent. Arrival of new villagers increases by 5% every 100 Fame.

Increased amount of Fame earned from extra population based on your most populous opponent.



Fame 1500 (3rd level) - Most Beautiful Banquet
  • Unlock a specific new recipe at the Stove
  • 1.000 Meat, 1.000 Fish, 1.000 Vegetables, 1.000 Mushrooms
  • It takes 3 months to prepare
  • While preparing this recipe, all other recipes are not available
  • Every clan is notified and invited at the great Banquet
  • When the preparation is complete, the game is won
Allowing or not Fame Victory have no more relations with Special Squirrel Win Condition.



Rumor-mongering

No other clan can befriend any neutral faction which has become your ally. This faction gains +20% defense against all your enemies. It also becomes more aggressive towards them (this also affects Jötnars).

If neutral factions are befriended and you have Rumor Mongering, they will attack as soon as possible.

Your units gain Cloaked within these factions' territories.




Economics

You gain +4 krowns during meals and all meals gain +2 Happiness (Only Happiness bonus is shared with ally clans)




Relic Yggdrasil's Root

The chances of being disturbed are reduced.

In some cases we saw that the discord effect of Eldritch zones turning enemy units against one another was too efficient, so we reduced its defensive power slightly.








Fame 500 - Oskoreia

Oskoreia ability:
  • Cast time : 0 => 1.5 sec
  • Oskoreia spirits disappear 10% faster


Relic : Gleipnir

The Trap no longer triggers the instant the player clicks on the skill.

It triggers in 2 steps : First, the trap appears on the area with no effect, then after 3s the trap inflicts damage.

It lets the enemy react and leave the zone to decrease the effects on its army.



Sharp Eyes

You can now use Lynx with Sharp Eyes like Scouts.



Hunting paths

Double arrows:
  • 30% => 20% damage on the second arrow.






Ox is a late game clan, but it was a bit off the curve compared to other clans: too weak in early game and too strong late game. We increased early game power and reduced late game power.


Torfin

Attack power 15 => 14



Torfin's Throne

Torfin's Throne now produces +2 Lore when Torfin is not summoned.



Military Training

Military units in territory produce military XP.

Upgrade cost for Training Camps -50% => -30%



Ferocious Charge

Warriors gain +50% => +30% damage on a charge attack.







The Clan of the Kraken was too map generation dependent and we wanted to give it more control.


Starting Bonuses

Fresh fish tech is removed and become a starting bonus

+20% fishermen production.



Valkyrie Units

Valkyries produce +1 Happiness.

Valkyries regenerate Health near Horgr.



Knowledge From Beyond

Trade routes with neutral factions +20% krowns and relationships.



Foresight replaces Medicine => Colonization



Valhalla’s reinforcement - replaces Legendary Hero

You will have 1 Valkyrie at your Town Hall and you can control +1 Valkyrie. Valkyries also regenerate Health on High Tides tiles and outside combat. Passive regeneration increases by 100%.



Wyrd - High Tides

Now makes fish appear in lakes if there are none.



Army of the Dead (new conquest bonus)

No more Happiness penalty when specter warriors are in your territory.







We’ve heard that Fame 200 Craftsmen became less impactful. We buffed it.


Fame 200 - Craftsmen

Improved tools for civilians get an additional +5% => +10% production bonus.

Selling Stone or Iron earns +20% krowns. Allies receive double resources.







The relic was weak, we improved it.


Skull of Hrungnir

Zombie Giant has its move speed increased.

Zombie Giant costs 200 Food 100 krowns => 200 Food







The Clan of the Snake is complicated to balance. We are reinforcing Skirmishers to encourage some early-game interactions.


Skirmishers

Dodge +10%

The way the dodge is effective has been overhauled.



Black Market

Trading with neutral factions no longer reduces relations with them.



Relic Gungnir

All military units Dodge + 10%

Unlocks the Stealth ability for all your military units.

Stealth : Can’t be targeted by Watch Towers for 5s until attacking it







Majority of complaints for this clan were about the weak Gullinbursti relic. “Pay food to get food”, we changed that and gave a bit of control over the Giant Boar.


Bartering

Trade routes with neutral Factions +20% krowns and relations +1 happiness per trade route.



Osmosis replaces Trading Caravan Negotiation



Relic Mask of Gullinbursti

+10 Food (even if the Giant Boar is not summoned)

Reveals all forests.

Pay 200 Food Lore to summon one non controllable Giant Boar.

Giant Boar is not controllable while in combat.







Relic was a bit too strong, so we’ve changed the way it works to avoid the perma freeze.


Relic Scabbard of Gram

Your Warchief wields the sword Gram. Enemies hit by Gram are frozen, along with the area around them. Gives +10% attack +10% defense to shield maiden.

Apply Chilling Aura : freeze enemies hit and adjacent and apply penalties:
  • -15% attack speed
  • -15% move speed
  • effect lasts 2s
    5s cooldown


Kaija

When on a tile with lake fishes (neutral or ally territory), Kaija regenerates Health and produces +2 Food.







Very strong in rush builds, good everywhere with a strong economy, the Clan of the Stag was more powerful than all the other clans in Northgard.


Value of the Great Deeds

Skalds produce 1.5 krown (+2 when upgraded)

Skalds tools are free and -50% forge time



Food Preservation

+3 Food for each Silo (+5 if upgraded)

+1 => +0.5 Happiness per silo (+1 if upgraded).



Fame 200

Gain +150 Food +150 Wood +150 Krowns +75 Lore +10 Stones

You gain +50 Food, Wood and Krowns, +25 Lore and +5 Stones for each completed year, and again at the start of every subsequent year.







The Clan of the Raven is very dependent on beach tiles and thus map generation. We tried to give the clan more control by reducing this dependence. We also redesigned Mercenaries to make them more central to the Clan identity and rebalance their impact, which was too strong against beginner players and too weak against experienced ones.


Negotiators (replace Shipbuilding instead of Mining Efficiency)

Unlock the lighthouse.

Gain +2 Kröwns production and 10% Commercial Influence.

Increases Sailors’ resource production by 20%.



Mercenaries from Homeland ( Fame 200)

You can hire Mercenaries from your Harbor and send them to raid coastal areas without a Town Hall on it. Allow to trade with your Homeland at better rates.

+3 Villagers, +3 pop max, +1 happiness

Upgrades for your raids are available at the forge.



Sea Supremacy ( Fame 500)

RavenPort can hire mercenaries for krowns

You can send your Mercenaries to coastal zones with a Town Hall.

More upgrades for your raids are available at the forge. You can assign 3 more Sailors in your Harbor with a Lighthouse.

  • More Mercenaries : Add 2 mercenaries to the raid.
  • Better Preparation: Reduce the time it takes to recruit by 1 month

Upgrades available in the Forge at Fame 500 →
  • You can upgrade your mercenaries at the Forge
  • Up to 3 times for 2 more mercenaries per Raid and a maximum of 8 mercenaries per Raid
  • Better Preparation: Reduces the time it takes for Mercenaries to approach the coast 1 month
  • Fire Javelins: The mercenaries fleet throws fire javelins that damage and burn the zone’s buildings.


Mercenary unit

Attack power : 10 => 8

Mercenary tool forge upgrade : +20% projectile defense +40% Attack power.







Lots of changes to the Goat. We want to give him back his identity.


Clan description

Goat units get -20% military XP



Fame 500

You gain 1 free feast per year. Your Defense Towers gain 25% resistance when feasting.



Amenities

Costs 80% => 50% less to develop a zone.

Periodically, a sheepfold containing 2 sheeps makes a new sheep appear.



Industrious

Upgraded food-producing buildings and brewery have 4 slots instead of 3.



Barricades removed

Civils +20% defense per building in the zone



Wool trade replaces Erudition

Sheep in Sheepfold earn +0.5 krowns

Sheep can be sacrificed for 40 krowns



Food Trade

Trading food earn +50% krowns

+50% Relationship with Jotunn








Veiled Threats

Trade Routes +50% => +75% if you have a Berserker,

+100% for trade route in the same tile as Berserker

After Berserker died at least once, -50% krowns costs and no Iron to recruit him again.












Mining Efficiency

Miners extract ore from deposits 50 => 30% faster.



Wyvern projectiles

Wyvern projectiles’ impact is still reduced by projectile resistance and can be dodged.

Wyvern projectiles make splash damages that can’t be avoided or dodged

Every target damaged by splash damages becomes burnt and suffers burn damages over time.



Wounded units

A wounded unit suffers 20% production penalty

A unit is wounded only if it goes under 75% HP

A unit stays wounded until it reaches 100% Health

Adding a white bar to the Health bar to see when your units will be wounded.



Neutral Factions

The conditions and the turn over that allow Myrkalfar attacks are reworked to make them more regular and more fair.

Relationships increase time no longer scales with teamsize.

Myrkalfar and Kobold no longer spawn indefinitely



Jotunns

Eradicating the Jotunns faction give 150 Fame => 100 Fame



AI improved

Less Warchief and armies suicides

We’ve corrected a bug that makes Warchief abnormally recruited too soon



Port and Longship Dock - (Quality of Life)

When assigning a sailor, the raid starts directly ( Lore selected by default)



Monster Slayer (for every clan)

+10% attack power vs Dragonkin, +30% attack power vs other mystical creatures

+50% XP from mystical creatures



Expeditions

You can now claim rewards for completed achievements.



Scripting

Added the VMealSquirrel victory condition for scripting (to disable the squirrel victory)



Others changes

Townhall can now be hit by Mjöllnir and Fire javelins, and it can burn.

It’s now possible to copy / paste in text zones

Free Teams
