Nova Cup Recap: September

Full credit for this recap goes to nattodog.

September Nova Cup has wrapped! Last Saturday and Sunday, competitors from a large spread of competitive ranges put their skills to the test to see who can take the winning title.

First, some signup stats.
Total signups (teams): 128
Total signups (solos): 87
Dropout rates (during check-ins before brackets are made): D4 42% -- D3 49% -- D2 33% – D1 0%
Total teams in final brackets: 86

All-in-all, that's 343 players who signed up to participate in the Nova Cup this month, thank you all!

If you missed any of the action and would like to deep dive into it yourself, please check out the links to all tournament footage from all divisions https://beta.legiontd2.com/esports/#panelTournaments.

If you don’t want to watch over 30 hours of tournament footage for a recap, you’re in luck! Here is a recap of each division across both days.

Division 4 (Team Rank Spread 826 - 1544)

Day 1
 • In round two, team Opulence vs Indyscantik, Opulence RELEASED THE KRAKENS for a wave 19 win to move into game 3 of the set where they came out on top this time to move further into the bracket.
 • Also in round two, team Name pending started with a bye move ahead into round 3, where they came out 2-0 vs The Swampy Gooners.
 • Henriksux had a 2-1 game to make it into round 3, falling to team FGS.
 • The Aliens won from round 1, and played well through round 2 to win 2-0, but met their match against Opulence in round 3
Day 2
 • In the semi finals, team Rip fought hard against Opulence, surviving a huge send on 17 bringing their king from 100%-1% but they were not able to overcome the econ advantage and lost game two from another strong send on 19.
 • In grand finals, game two went to wave 21(!) where Opulence won the exchange.
 • Unfortunately due to personal work and time restraints, team Name Pending had to concede after 0-2 giving Opulence the 1st place finish this month. Will we see them battle again next time?

Division 3 (Team Rank Spread 1558-1837)

Day 1
 • Round 1 Potato Poopers vs Snail Lovers, player Chasm of Potato Poopers made a clutch hold on 17 to a large send while ending the game in a 1 hit KO against Snail Lovers to advance
 • Round 1 1Leavers vs eLBee/Panualidades, a player disconnected on wave 6 and never returned, making it our first ever bot game. 1Leavers secured the win to continue on.
 • Round 2 1Leavers vs Schnitzel, 1Leavers invested heavily into a late game build from very early in the game, which paid off by forcing a possible 17 send to win the game for Schnitzel, allowing 1Leavers to end it closer to their terms on wave 16.
 • Round 3 1Leavers vs Darra, Darra put on intense pressure with Giant Snail, sending full snails every wave which left 1Leavers on the back foot, a position they were not able to recover from.

Day 2
 • In grand finals game one, team Ogerlover3000 had a comeback victory on wave 15 with a 100-0% send against Bärserker.
 • In the final game, Henzer from team Bärserker stayed at 6 workers until the final send on 11, showing you don’t
 • always* need to have the most workers to secure the win.

Division 2 (Team Rank Spread 1832-2296)

Day 1
 • In game two of the set between Benis and L1ra/Evilkenivel, Benis took a big hit on 17 for a win for L1ra and Evilkenivel. In the final game of the set, Benis went for a much more aggressive econ approach and took the win with an impressive rat army from player Item Shop.
 • After a very intense and close match where team Benis very nearly took the set, Flights Broken Back came out with the victory to move into semifinals
 • Team Halo progressed into semifinals largely uncontested

Day 2
 • Team Flights Broken Back made it all the way to grand finals against team Halo, with final score 3-1 in Halo’s favor. Kudos to Flight’s teammate The0point91Joe for such an impressive first run through D2. And congrats to Halo for the clutch victory. Good games!

Division 1 (Team Rank Spread 2376-3088)

Day 1
 • Round 1 Brazilian Carnival vs Doomsday, in game 2 Doomsday started the match off rough but took the win on a huge 12 send for the comeback victory. Doomsday took game 3 as well to proceed in the bracket.
 • Round 2 GreenooB vs B!Square, in game 1 Bonny of B!Square managed to get two Fenix’s to behave on wave 15 and hold both lanes on an attempted send, cementing a large lead that got them the win.
 • Game 2 of the same set between GreenooB and B!Square, GreenooB answers back with a win on 16 in a close game.
 • Game 3 B!Square gets the win to move into day 2 finals, with more great usage of Fenix and a huge worker push to ensure the game ends on 16. Well played to both teams!

Day 2
 • Abrasiert bs B!Square, game one almost ended on 15 for Abrasiert, but after barely surviving, Kingdanzz of Abrasiert suicide pushed workers all the way up to 70(!) for a wave 18 race.
 • Game 2 of the same set, Abrasiert had 2 Divine Blessing picks that were revealed on wave 12 on a Doomsday and Azeria for full holds that cemented a strong lead ending in a 14 win.
 • Game 2 between September 13 and ßutterßoys, a huge trade between both teams came on 13 bringing king HP to 20% or below for both. One player from each team suicide pushed workers, and on 15 FCLucy from September 13 holds their lane for a clutch win.
 • Game 2 between Abrasiert and ßutterßoys, Kingdanzz of Abrasiert hold a 13 send with unique gatling gun positioning using aps and Fenix
 • Game 4 of the same teams, duo Divine Blessing on Doomsday and Azeria on 12 for Abrasiert gets leaked from a huge send including a Kraken(!) radically shifting the pace of the game and ending with a game win for ßutterßoys on wave 14 in a close race. Penny’s heart rate also went above resting for potentially the first time.
 • In the final game, ßutterßoys showcases the power of Lizard Army for a huge send on 12, winning D1 in a reverse sweep! Well played.

Closing Thoughts

Thank you to everyone who participated and signed up for the September Nova Cup! A tremendous thank you to all tournament organizers. Big shout-outs to our newest Nova Cup staff member AmerikanHunay for guiding both new and returning players through brackets throughout the weekend and thank you to SlinkyDinky for work on an automated check-in Discord bot that cut a tremendous amount of work from the usual morning setup for the tournament. We could not have an event to this scale without the help and support from everyone and it is greatly appreciated.

Our end result Division winners this month are:
Division 1: ßutterßoys (XGod37 & Shea)
Division 2: Halo (Valas & Lemon Rush)
Division 3: Bärserker (Guenni99 & Henzer)
Division 4: Opulence (Scarabimi & Daffybow)

Congratulations to all winners!

We hope to see you next month, October 29th-30th for the next Nova Cup!

v9.08.2

Pathing & Targeting PSA
- As a result of the Harpy & Sky Queen fix in v9.08, all units were affected slightly; there were some cases where units would waste time winding up (their attack animation) when they should have already attacked.
- This is most noticeable on Wave 1 where certain openers like Windhawk, Gateguard, or Oathbreaker may hold slightly better than they did in previous patches.
- We’ll continue to keep an eye on it to see if any changes need to be made.

Major Fixes
- Workers: Fixed a very rare bug where a player would receive more mythium from workers than they were supposed to
- Workers: Fixed a longtime bug where players weren’t receiving mythium for a couple seconds when Wave 1 was cleared

Minor Fixes
Fixed a chat bug where certain player names accidentally rendered as emojis

Mini Slime
- Health: 160 → 140
- Damage: 12 → 13

Slime Larva
- Health: 400 → 360
- Damage: 31 → 33

Slime Siren
- Health: 1240 → 1110
- Damage: 59 → 63
- Slime Progatation: Number of Slime Larvas spawned at maximum mana: 2 → 3
- Now takes 20% longer to reach maximum mana
- Fixed an interaction with Guardian Angel where it was accidentally spawning an extra Slime Siren

Shifting power from health to DPS (so their only use isn’t stalling). Also making it more rewarding to reach maximum mana on Slime Siren.

Harpy
- Attack speed: 1.57 → 1.52

Sky Queen
- Attack speed: 1.57 → 1.52
- Damage: 64 → 58

Looks like the bug fix worked :sunglasses: Hotfix nerf to bring these units back to earth.

(14) Killer Slugs
- Health: 1980 → 2000

(15) Giant Quadrapus
- Damage: 96 → 95
- Giant Quadrapus: Damage: 384 → 380

Slightly shifting power from wave 15 to 14.

Localization
- Translations updated

Slime Larva, Slime Siren

Expected patch release: September 19-21

News & Updates
- Upcoming September Nova Cup is September 17-18. Sign-up while you still can!
- If you missed it, check out my (Lisk's) Reddit AMA from last month! I've been doing these every major patch, so keep an eye out next week for the next one.

New Units: Slime Larva & Slime Siren

Slime Larva
 • Tier 2 (Cost: 50g)
 • Role: Versatile
 • Melee / Impact / Arcane
 • 400 HP / 24 DPS
Mini Slime
When this unit dies, it leaves behind a Mini Slime.

Slime Siren
 • Tier 2 Upgrade (Upgrade cost: 125g)
 • Role: Versatile, Mana User
 • Melee / Impact / Arcane
 • 1240 HP / 73 DPS
Slime Propagation
Gains mana whenever it attacks or is attacked. When this unit dies, it leaves behind a Slime Larva. If its mana is maxed, it spawns an extra Slime Larva.

New Skin: Mecha Arctaire

New Skin: Underworld Great Boar

Improvements & Fixes

Major Improvements
 • Interface: You can now queue mercenaries via hotkeys. Default is pressing Shift+A, Shift+S, etc. It is customizable in the Options > Controls menu.
 • Bots: Now a bit smarter in a variety of situations. Bots received some love as part of the development of the upcoming Desert Ridge campaign.
 • Campaign: Shadowynn & King Dan now perform more consistently (overall buff). Added a congratulations popup after you beat King Dan on Normal. Fixed some -restart bugs.
 • Performance: Improved performance when wave starts (there’s more to still be done in future patches)
Minor Improvements
 • Game Coach: No longer warns/bothers you about your Mastermind roll if you picked Yolo
 • Takeover Bots: Now Auto-sends if its allies are all Auto-sending, instead of never Auto-sending at all. This should help Takeover bots not fall behind as much in Classic.
 • Codex: Now rounds “per gold” numbers to 2 decimal places instead of 1
 • New Emojis: "pogchamp" and "tools"
Bug Fixes
 • Gameplay: Fixed a major bug with Harpy and Sky Queen not attacking as fast as their numbers indicated. Some units with Dark Mage buff also didn’t attack as fast as they should have, and the same fix applies to those.
 • Profiles & Stats: Fixed some rare cases where Season Goals or other rewards weren’t given out in some rare circumstances
 • Interface: Fixed a bug where flying units had their selection hitboxes too low. They should be easier to click now.
 • Tooltips: Fixed a bug where Mana Regen percentages for units without natural mana regen were displaying incorrectly
 • Controls: Fixed a bug where Ctrl+Shift/Ctrl+Alt/Alt+Shift modifiers didn’t save/load properly
 • Pause: Fixed a bug where the game would sometimes think you were AFK if pausing the game for a long time
Localization & API
 • Localization: Improved formatting of Google Sheets (word wrap is now enabled!)
 • Localization: Fixed a bug where some translation fields weren’t available on the Google Sheets, such as “Already Equipped”, “Owned”, “Not Available”, “Buy”, and a few others
 • API: Variety of fixes & improvements
 • API: Added valuePerWave property to see player value per wave (including stacks)
 • Join the Legion TD 2 Contributors Discord to stay up-to-date with Localization & API development!
Game Balance
General
King
- Health and damage increased slightly on wave 13 only
- Upgrade King Attack: 17% → 18%
Legion Spells
Hero
- Damage and damage reduction: 5.5% → 5.25%

High win rate and pick rate.

Glacial Touch
- Damage: 50 → 45

High pick rate.

Titan
- Health: 1350 → 1400

Slightly low win rate and pick rate.
Fighters
Zeus
- Attack speed: 2.353 → 2.326

High win rate.

Harpy / Sky Queen
- Fixed a bug where Harpy and Sky Queen were doing significantly less damage than expected at high attack speeds. This bug is the reason previous attack speed buffs had little to no effect.
- Decreased attack speed by 30%. Together with the bug fix, this is still an overall buff, since the previous Harpy/Sky Queen patches didn't do what they were supposed to.
- Sky Queen damage: 70 --> 67

Infiltrator / Orchid
- Shuriken bonus damage: 33 → 35

Gateguard / Harbinger
- Mana regeneration increased by 4%

Desert Pilgrim / Lost Chieftain
- Attack speed: 0.83 → 0.85

Slightly low win rate and pick rate.

Mudman
- Health: 1600 → 1570

Golem
- Health: 4750 → 4700

Slightly high win rate and pick rate.

Grarl
- Health: 1330 → 1310

King Claw
- Mana regeneration increased by 11%

King Claw deserves a buff. To avoid power creep, it is being paired with a small Grarl nerf (above).

Disciple
- Damage: 75 → 73

Slightly high win rate and pick rate.

Sand Badger
- Health: 2460 → 2500
- Damage: 74 → 75

Low win rate.

Iron Scales
- Health: 6680 → 6730
- Damage: 201 → 202

Banana Bunk
- Damage: 70 → 67

High pick rate and indirectly buffed by wave changes (higher attack speed → more reflect damage).

Soul Gate / Hell Gate
- Attack speed of all spawns decreased by 4%

Slightly high win rate and pick rate.

Holy Avenger / Sovereign
- Attack speed: 1.143 → 1.13

Hydra
- Damage: 138 → 144
- Hydraling: Damage: 46 → 48

Low win rate and pick rate.
Mercenaries
Lizard
- Damage: 34 → 35

Fiend
- Health: 920 → 950

Dino
- Health: 1260 → 1300

Cannoneer
- Damage: 105 → 110

Drake
- Attack speed: 1 → 1.04

Snail and Dragon Turtle have been outshining higher income mercenaries most of the time. No longer!

Brute
- Health: 870 → 880
- Damage: 55 → 56

With this patch’s buffs to income mercenaries, Brute is also receiving a very small buff to make sure it continues to be worth the risk (giving up income) in the early game.

Pack Leader
- Leadership Aura: Damage increase: 6 (15 for bosses) → 5 (15 for bosses)

Pack Leader continues to be almost always good and too often the best choice, crowding out other options and outshining more expensive mercenaries in the late game. This change makes Pack Leader weaker in the late game. Wave adjustments (see below) keep Pack Leader viable in the early game.
Waves
Waves 7, 8, 9, 12
- Attack speed: +20%, damage -17% (DPS unchanged)

This change keeps Pack Leader viable on early waves without changing any DPS.

Closing Remarks

We hope you enjoy this patch! Thank you again for playing Legion TD 2.

This Month

The upcoming September Nova Cup takes place September 17-18.

$750 in cash prizes and sign-up is free - first come first served!
There are four skill divisions, so no matter what your rating is, you have a chance to win.
Participation prize: Every participant who plays all of their matches will receive a FREE random card. If you haven't played a tournament yet, this is a great time to join.

Sign-up Instructions
 • Sign-ups are open from NOW until September 17 at 9am PDT / 6pm CEST.
 • To sign up, find a teammate and log into Legion TD 2. Both players should join a unique chat lobby by typing /join team name (e.g. /join Snail Kings) in Global Chat. After you're both in the lobby, have one player type /signup.
 • The first 16 teams to sign up in each division can participate. Other teams are waitlisted. There are usually no-shows, so waitlisted teams are encouraged to be present in the Discord and ready to play. View the team list to see your sign-up position and division.
 • If there are more than 32 teams checked in, there will be an additional best-of-1 qualifying round to allow more teams to participate. It is a best-of-1, rather than a best-of-3, to keep the event from running overly long.
 • Both players must join the Legion TD 2 Official Tournament Discord. Make sure to set your server nickname to match your in-game name.
Solo Sign-ups

Like last month, you may now sign up as a solo player!
 • You may sign-up as a solo player using the usual /signup command, and you will be added to the public Teams list as usual
 • If there is a waitlist, team sign-ups will always take priority over solo sign-ups
 • If you sign up as a solo, but then you find a teammate, you can re-sign up as a team any time before check-ins start. Just use the /signup command again with the new teammate. The tournament organizer will void your old solo signup after they process your new team signup.
 • After check-ins are over, all checked-in solo players will be randomly formed into teams by the tournament organizer. You cannot request a specific teammate at this point; if you want to play with a specific person, you should have signed up as a team instead.
It is still strongly recommended to sign-up as a team to guarantee your spot in the tournament and to give you time to practice with your teammate beforehand.

Format

All Divisions
 • Mastermind 2v2 (Tournament Mode)
 • Hybrid is banned
 • Single elimination
 • Best of 3. Best of 5 final

Division 1 Only: Conquest Format
After winning a match using a particular Mastermind option, you can no longer use that Mastermind option for the rest of that series.
 • For example, if you win game 1 with Greed, you can't pick Greed the rest of the series.
 • The restriction applies to players individually; if your ally picks Greed, but you picked Yolo, you can still pick Greed next game, but your ally can't.
 • The restriction only applies to the winning players. If you lose the game, you can still pick the same options next game.
 • If you violate this rule and your opponent reports it, the game will be counted as an automatic loss for your team. Because this is a new rule, please show good sportsmanship and remind each other before starting the game.
The goal of the Conquest Format is to force the winning team to be able to win with a variety of playstyles, which leads to more varied matches. It also gives the losing team a little bit of help for the rest of the series. Credits to Pennywise#8456 and Shadowings#1413 for this format!
