I've been waiting for this day for what feels like forever. Today, at Gamescom Opening Night Light, The Chinese Room has finally solidified the Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines 2 release date. The vampire RPG has been a long-running obsession of mine since its re-reveal last year, haunting the shadows of my mind like a Ventrue on steroids, taunting me like any good Toreador would. And now, it's real, and it's coming pretty soon, with even more clans at launch than was initially expected. But there's bad news with the good: if you want to play as either of the game's new additions, you'll have to splash the cash.

A lone, long-forgotten radio sits in a dusty, rundown room, conspicuous in its modernity. I approach it, curious, pushing the on switch tentatively - this is 2024 Seattle, they didn't have weird, talking machines when I stalked the earth. "Hello Seattle, this is your 2am weather and traffic update," a voice informs me. "We're still under a severe storm warning, and it's cold, cold, cold out there." It takes me a moment to recognize the dulcet tones of Jason Carl, brand manager for the World of Darkness and LA By Night's iconic storyteller. "Now let's make a note of these important reminders, because multiple things are happening at once" - one of Carl's most iconic lines from the aforementioned live play. I feel myself break into a smile, and, honestly, I shed a little tear. I've been waiting for Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines 2 for years, and this tiny, easily missed interaction suggested my faith in The Chinese Room hasn't been for nothing, even if sometimes it's felt like I've been clinging to a rose-tinted reverie.

Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines 2 finally has a full release date, plus a bloody good new trailer

"Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines 2 has been delayed again, this time until the second half of 2025," Edwin wrote in March this year. Today I write: Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines 2 has been given a full release date at tonight's Gamescom Opening Night Live, along with a fresh trailer.

To this point, the tale of Bloodlines 2 has been one of fan swearing induced by delays that have been a seriously regular occurence. Originally worked on by Hardsuit Labs, the game's current devs The Chinese Room have said they're going for more of a spiritual successor than straight sequel. As of that last delay earlier this year, they were also very keen not to release it in as buggy a form as another Paradox project, Cities: Skylines 2.

The World of Darkness is just that: a world. While Vampire: The Masquerade is very much White Wolf's flagship TTRPG, there's also Werewolf: The Apocalypse, Hunter: The Reckoning, then seemingly long-forgotten entries like Mage: The Ascension and Changeling: The Dreaming - more on those later. While the noir-ish setting of VTM lends itself perfectly to videogames, we've also seen Hunter's self-titled videogame release in 2002, then Nacon brought Werewolf to virtual life with Earthblood in 2022, followed up by Choice of Games' choose-your-own-adventure-style visual novel, The Book of Hungry Names, in 2024. But with White Wolf taking ownership of the World of Darkness all over again, I ask LA By Night icon Jason Carl about the team's plans to adapt Werewolf or Hunter into projects as ambitious as Bloodlines 2.
