Dying Light 2: Reloaded Edition News

Dying Light 2 has no guns, and it has a shotgun

One of the big inflection points in zombie game Dying Light is when you first lay hands on a firearm. Up until that point, you had been dealing the Harran's infestation of zombies with whatever melee weapons you could cobble together - cricket bats, pipes, and creatively electrified combinations of junk that could remove zombie limbs while cauterizing the wounds. Guns changed the game - and they won't be part of Dying Light 2. However, there is a shotgun in Dying Light 2.

Sure, that sounds a bit contradictory: you can't have a game with "no guns" if there's a shotgun, that's just how reality works, right? Well, it's just a matter of how you're counting firearms versus other weapons. In Dying Light 2, which is set some years after the events of the first co-op game, a world war has led to the destruction of most weapons - meaning you won't be able to find mass-produced guns lying around the city the way you eventually did in the original Dying Light.

You will, however, still be able to craft weapons - and these craftable arms include several ranged options. With the right components, you'll even be able to build a rudimentary shotgun - which technically breaks the "no guns" rule, but it should feel pretty natural in the post apocalyptic setting of Dying Light 2.

Dying Light 2 development update set for next week

News about Dying Light 2 has been spotty over the past year or so, with most updates having to do with high-profile staffing departures - the studio cut ties with writer Chris Avellone following allegations of harassment, and narrative lead Pawel Selinger left the company in January. Now Techland, which has pushed back against rumours that its zombie game was in "development hell," says it has news to share about Dying Light 2... next week.

"We've got a few words to share with you about the Dying Light 2 development process," Techland tweeted cryptically March 12. "Be sure to be with us next Wednesday." The tweet also included a link to the Dying Light Discord server, promising a first look at the announcement there.

After such a turbulent year across the games industry, this is the kind of announcement-of-an-announcement that could cause alarm among fans. With little word from the studio to go on and rumours of a stalled-out development, some players might reasonably fear that the studio is gearing up to announce the game's cancellation.

Dying Light 2

didn’t have much in the way of news to share throughout 2020, but it seems Techland are hoping to change that for 2021. In January 2020, they announced a delay without naming a new release window for their next zombie romp and have been rather quiet since. Although narrative designer Paweł Selinger has now announced his departure from the company, Techland say he’s “left a large piece of himself” with Dying Light 2 and that they’ll have news about the game to share soon.

Dying Light 2 narrative lead leaves Techland, devs promise "exciting news" soon

Dying Light 2 narrative lead Pawel Selinger has left Techland after 22 years with the company. Selinger was a lead artist and art director at Techland prior to working on Dying Light 2, and was of the key voices in determining the upcoming game's overall vision. Techland says that Selinger's duties were taken over in October 2020 by Piotr Szymanek, a Polish TV writer who previously worked with HBO Europe.

"After over 22 years, I decided to end my cooperation with Techland," Selinger says in a LinkedIn post, "I would like to express my gratitude to the company that has allowed me to develop and fulfill myself for half of my life. Techland, I will always be rooting for you, as well as the great people I have met thanks to you. I wish you that Dying Light 2 and subsequent projects will become world hits."

"Paweł Selinger, who has been the narration designer for the last two years, decided at the end of 2020 to end his cooperation with Techland and to pursue his further career elsewhere," a Techland representative tells us via email. "Paweł spent most of his professional life at Techland and he, among others, takes credit for the success of the series Call of Juarez.
