Battle of Moscow 🎖️ Invitational tournament

Hello KARDS players!

It's time for another commemorative event, this time remembering the Battle of Moscow.
Historical background
Operation Barbarossa, the German invasion plan for the Soviet Union, called for Moscow's capture within four months. Having gained significant ground since their invasion on the 22nd of June in 1941, the Germans found themselves close to accomplishing their goal of capturing Moscow when they secured Smolensk, an important stronghold on the way to Moscow. The Germans, however, could not advance further due to the risk of exposing their flanks, so they turned their attention to Leningrad and Kiev. When the advance on Moscow resumed on the 30th of September 1941, the German forces were weakened, and the Soviets had reinforced the city. This was the beginning of the end for the hopes of a German victory in the USSR.
New tournament format: King of the Hill
To commemorate the Battle of Moscow's incredible events, we will be hosting an invitational tournament with a brand new format: King of the Hill!

In this tournament, 8 invited players will compete against each other to find out who is the true king of the Soviets in Kards.

Each player can bring two different Mono-Soviet decks (only including Soviet cards) and an unlimited amount of additional decks, provided they only contain cards from a single nation that isn't the Soviet Union.

At the beginning of the tournament, players draw a number from 1-8.

Player number 1 starts the tournament as the king of the hill, having to defend it using one of their two Soviet decks against the challengers, players 2-8, that can field any non-Soviet deck in a bid to defeat the king and claim the hill as their own.

At the end of play, the player with the most successful defenses of the hill will be crowned winner and undisputed Soviet champion.
Eight champions
The players competing in the Battle of Moscow Invitational are:
 • Innocent Bubbles
 • Spooz
 • Darkness
 • Jking7
 • ToDieIsGain
 • Doge34
 • Blue_Blast
 • AriBigBehn

KARDS World Championship 2020 🏆 Get ready!

Hello Kards community!

As we near the end of the first qualification stage for the 2020 KARDS World Championship, it's time to give an update on the upcoming stages all the way to the finals!

The KARDS World Championship is a 128-player tournament with the final four players fighting for a $10.000 prize pool at the end of this year.

This year we are hosting the World Championship in the middle of crunch time. We work on a whole host of new and exciting features, including reconnect, a brand new onboarding experience, reworking and fine-tuning the in-game progression systems and working on the overall quality of life. This means we will also utilize external tools to reduce the need for specialized, one-time solutions and avoid overloading the programming department.

Therefore we will be hosting Stage 2 in the client and Stage 3 on the popular Battelfy tournament platform. Here are all the details for each stage:
Stage 1
Stage 1 has been ongoing for the last six seasons; the top 10 players of the ladder each season have qualified for the tournament. The last chance to be eligible via Stage 1 ends on September 30th with the current season's end.
Stage 2
In stage 2, we need to find 64 players to round out the top 128 (60 players from Stage 1 plus for the previous World Championship finalist are already set).
To get the best 64 players possible to round out the top 128 for this year's World Championship, we will be awarding qualification spots to the top 64 players on the ladder that have not qualified for the tournament so far.

The top 64 players of the ladder at the end of Season 19 that are not qualified already qualify for the World Championship tournament. Season 19 starts October 1st and ends October 31st at 11:59 pm (UTC).

We hope to ensure a high level of play in the World Championship and provide additional incentives for people to play the ladder during the season outside of the top 12 in the Officer Club that qualifies for the monthly Officer Club Championship tournament.
Stage 3
In stage 3, we need to go from 128 of our finalists down to the top 4.

Last year this was done through a massive single elimination bracket in the client, and while we could do that again, we have listened to the player feedback. Instead, we will be running two Swiss tournaments to find the top 16 players before moving over to a single-elimination bracket to get our final 4.

This means that we will host a 128 person swiss tournament that promotes 8 players into the finals, and then a 120 person swiss tournament promotes the remaining 8 players for our top 16.

We will then play a single-elimination tournament with those 16 players to determine the top 4, which then fight for their share of the $10.000 prize pool alive.

Our goal with this format is to reduce the tournament's variance as much as we can by giving players as many matches as possible to earn their spot, limiting the impact of bad draws in single matches.

The dates for stage 3 matches are as follows:

7. November - Swiss round 1
8. November - Swiss round 1
14. November - Swiss round 2
15. November - Swiss round 2
21. November - Top 16
22. November - Top 16
Finals
Unfortunately, due to the ongoing global pandemic of Covid-19, we will not be flying players to compete in a studio in Iceland for this year's World Championship. This has been a hard decision for us to make, but given the circumstances, an inevitable one. Instead, the tournament will be played entirely online. Despite all of this, we can not wait to bring you a fantastic show for the World Championship finals on the 5th and 6th of December!

Join our KARDS Discord server, follow us on Twitch, and subscribe to our YouTube channel, so you don't miss a second of the action!
