A new update: Global Conflict
Highlights of this update are the Elite and two Special cards, while the standard and limited-rarity cards are valuable additions to the theme.

As the new Elite card of this update, the Japanese 114th Infantry Regiment is truly a force to be reckoned with. Already, its Ambush and Smokescreen effect turns it into a formidable opponent on the battlefield, but then it comes with an additional effect!

We also honor New Zealand's contributions alongside Great Britain during WW2. As one of the new special cards, we see the RNZAF variant of the legendary Kittyhawk arriving.

All of the cards, effects and strategic background are rooted in WW2 history (see below).

This update comes with 7 unique new and several handpicked existing cards to support the theme (18 cards in total). The premium version includes:

 • Our highly popular alternate art
 • A new Japanese HQ and battlefield
 • Gold versions of the "Global Conflict" cards
 • The traditional Japanese Pith helmet as a new board item
 • A sizable number of wildcards of all rarities

KARDS is entirely free to play and stays like this.

You can obtain the new cards in many ways, for example, by using wildcards or purchasing the "Global Conflict" bundles for gold or diamonds.
Card details
This update adds 7 new cards to the collection; all of them are themed around the Global Conflict and allow you to improve existing decks or create new deck variants.
SUNRISE DIVISION
The 23rd Division, aka Sunrise Division, of the Imperial Japanese Army was formed in 1938 during the outbreak of the Second Sino-Japanese War (1937-1945). The division participated in the Battle of Khalkhin Gol against the Red Army in 1939, where it suffered a staggering loss of 12,000 men, which was about 80% of their combat strength. Following the devastating defeat the remnants of the division returned to Japan to assist with the border defense force, but was later reformed as a mechanized infantry division and sent to Taiwan for garrison duties in 1944. That same year the Sunrise Division was sent to the Philippines where it participated in the Battle of Luzon, against the US and Philippine Commonwealth forces, where it lost 24,508 men out of a total strength of 29,636 men. After the Battle of Luzon the Sunrise Division ceased to exist.
EDGE OF THE EMPIRE
The Greater East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere, also known as the “New Order in East Asia”, was a concept where the idea was to liberate Asia from the Western colonial powers and create a bloc of Asian nations which would be led by Japan. This concept served as a front for Japan's expansion in Asia during WWII, but the controversy was that Japan replaced the Western powers with a ruthless administration and drained the resources in most of their conquered nations in order to achieve their own imperial ambitions. At the height of WWII, the Empire of Japan was one of the largest in history, its sovereignty reached 8,510,000 km2 and its occupied regions and territories population accounted for 20% of the world's population. However, following Japan’s surrender to the Allies in September 1945 its governance was restricted to Japan and its islands and as a result the Co-Prosperity Sphere ceased to exist.
2e RIMa
The 2nd Marine Infantry Regiment (French: 2e Régiment d'Infanterie de Marine or 2e RIMa) is a regiment of the Troupes de marine in the French Army which has been active from 1831 to the present day. During WWII, the regiment took part in the Battle of France and resisted the German invasion forces at Amiens, but was dissolved following the fall of France in 1940. The 2e RIMa was restored with the Free French Forces in 1941 and participated in the Battle of Keren during the East African Campaign, as part of the Free French Brigade of the Orient. In 1942 the regiment joined the 2nd Free French Brigade, which in 1943 became part of the 1st Free French Division (1re Division Française Libre or 1re DFL). They were involved in operations and campaigns in Libya and Tunisia, including the Battle of El Alamein and the Battle of Takrouna. The 1re DFL joined the Italian Campaign in April 1944 where it fought in the Battle of Pontecorvo, and landed in Provence during Operation Dragoon, which was the Allied landing in Southern France. Finally in 1945, as part of the French First Army, the division fought German forces in the Colmar Pocket and participated in the city’s liberation.
MONSOON ROT
The Burma Campaign (1941-1944) was very much affected by the geographical characteristics of the region and the tropical climate was particularly extreme during the 1940s. From May to November the heat was blistering and painful, and then the monsoon season came with extreme thunderstorms that soaked the soldiers and their equipment, followed by insects that attacked them ruthlessly and tropical diseases that spread like wildfire among the troops. This made logistics extremely difficult for both friends and foe, but this hit the Japanese harder than the Allies and by 1944 the Japanese forces suffered their greatest military defeat up to that point. In total the Japanese suffered 200,000 casualties and losses in Burma, and some claim that 78% of these losses were from non-combat causes such as starvation and disease.
ATTACK IN THE COLONIES
Following the footsteps of their German ally, Italy declared war on Britain in June 1940. Their goal was to occupy British and French colonies in Africa as well as seizing control of the Suez Canal from the British. Initially the Italian forces managed to seize control of the upper Nile Valley in Sudan and British Somaliland. More troops were sent to capture the Northern part of the British colony of Kenya and to advance into Egypt in the hopes of reaching the Suez Canal. However, by this time the British managed to execute three counter offensives, and with great help from the RAF they managed to push back the Italians. What followed was a series of battles for control of Libya and regions of Egypt, and despite being reinforced by the Germans, the last Italian troops in East Africa were defeated at the Battle of Gondar in November 1941. However, several thousand Italian troops continued to wage a guerrilla war until September 1943, when Italy surrendered to the Allies.
RNZAF KITTYHAWK
The Curtiss P-40 Kittyhawk was the backbone of Royal New Zealand Air Force fighter squadrons from 1942 to 1944 when they were replaced by Corsairs. 297 Kittyhawks equipped eight squadrons of the RNZA during WWII, mostly in operations in the South West Pacific. By the end of the war, there were only 124 Kittyhawks remaining, 20 were lost in combat, 152 were lost in accidents overseas and in New Zealand. During the time the RNZAF Kittyhawks were used in front line service they accounted for at least 99 Japanese aircraft destroyed in air combat.
114th INFANTRY REGIMENT
The 114th Infantry Regiment was a regiment of the 56th Division of the Imperial Japanese Army during WWII. In 1942, during the Pacific War, the division was sent to Burma and landed in Rangoon as an attachment to the 25th Army. In Burma the division participated in the Battle of Toungoo in March 1942 where it defeated the defending Chinese forces. Later the division would advance to the Karenni States of Burma where it defeated the Chinese 6th Corps and forced them to retreat. From May 1942 the 56th Division mostly performed garrison duties on the Yunnan border to China, but in 1944 heavy fighting against the Allied forces resumed. During the fighting the 114th Infantry Regiment was credited with defeating Merrill’s Marauders during the Siege of Myitkyina and managed to delay and inflict heavy casualties to superior Chinese forces during the Battle of Mount Song. During these battles the 56th Division suffered heavy losses and was removed from the front line and ended the war on the border between South Burma and Thailand.

Global Conflict - New cards revealed

Welcome to the first card reveal of "Global Conflict," our upcoming update on May 10, 2022.

This fifth installment in our series of historically themed updates delivers reinforcements to the battlefield with 7 unique new cards (18 in total) and focuses on the wars in the colonies in SouthEast Asia.

The Southeast Asia Theater of War during WW2 encompassed multiple campaigns and military operations carried out between Japan and the colonial powers of the region, especially the United Kingdom. "Global Conflict" also brings some support to the colonial powers France and Italy.
Spoiler season starts now: First new "Global Conflict" card
We kick off the spoiler season with the Japanese SUNRISE DIVISION.
SUNRISE DIVISION
This unit of limited rarity shines with its interesting deployment effect: If your HQ has 10 or less hitpoints, then the Sunrise Division gets +6 attack and +6 defense.

The 23rd Division, aka Sunrise Division, of the Imperial Japanese Army was formed in 1938 during the outbreak of the Second Sino-Japanese War (1937-1945). Announcing a new Update - Global Conflict arrives on May 10

A new KARDS update is on the horizon! We continue to expand our series of historically themed updates with a new chapter “Global Conflict” arriving on May 10th.

Global Conflict focuses on the wars in the colonies and the far east, with support coming to Japan, Britain, France and Italy.

Before we go further into the details of this update, let’s have a quick look at the history.
Brief history
The Southeast Asia Theater of War during WW2 encompasses multiple campaigns and military operations carried out between Japan and the colonial powers of the region, especially the United Kingdom.

 • The fighting can be divided into four stages:
 • Asian occupation of French Indochina
 • Japanese campaign in Southeast Asia
 • Operations in the Indian Ocean
 • Campaigns in Burma and India

After the Allied defeat at the Battle of France in June 1940, Japan turned to the unprotected French (and Dutch) colonies.

The conflict began with Japan's attack on French Indochina in September 1940. After the United States, the United Kingdom, and the Netherlands imposed an economic blockade on the Japanese to limit their expansion, the war drastically intensified with simultaneous attacks on Hong Kong, the Philippines, Thailand, Singapore, and Malaya on 7 and 8 December 1941. At the same time, literally only hours after the main landing on Singora, Thailand, the bombing of Pearl Harbor took place.

The Allies suffered many defeats in the first half of the war. Especially the swift fall of Singapore was a major early victory for Japan; it also marked the largest surrender for the British military in history.

After destroying most of the Allied naval forces in Southeast Asia in the Battle of the Java Sea, the Japanese fleet set sail on February 26 for the Indian Ocean to destroy the British fleet in the region and thus secure the waters for the following Burma campaign.

In early 1942, Japanese forces drove the British out of Burma (then a British colony) and cut off the main route for supplies to China. Burma remained relatively pacified until early 1944, when the Japanese, supported by the Indian National Army, attempted unsuccessfully to capture two provinces of colonial India. Shortly after that, a Sino-British offensive would capture northern Burma and later the rest of Burma.

Improvement

Hello everyone!

It’s time for another balance patch. Since the release of Battle of Bulge and the last balance patch, the meta has been changing. The new star is obviously the combined arms deck. There are a few different versions on the ladder and the Britain ally version seems to be the most popular. Britain Air, Japan aggro and Ramp decks all remain strong.

In previous dev blogs, we usually only discuss the upcoming changes. This time, we would like to elaborate on what the team has been thinking about and the reasons for those changes. In general, we are always checking our internal statistics and the feedback from the community. Some cards are especially monitored. Even though only a few changes are released each time, much more changes are tested.

Sometimes, the community will react accordingly and the meta will be different. Sometimes, we have to tune down some cards so that such decks are a bit less powerful. SPITFIRE MK IIA is a very good example. Sometimes, we need to make some strategic changes so that the game can be improved in the long term. Reducing the amount of cards that send units back to hand directly from the frontline is one of those strategic changes. So was nerfing draw denial that happened last year. We are still monitoring the performance of such decks and may want to shift draw denial towards discard a bit more.

It is expected that the combined arms will become a T1 deck. We have tested a few versions already to adjust the combined arms deck, but decided not to change anything to the deck this time.

2ND CALIFORNIA was on the top of our change list for a long time. With the first nerf, it was performing decently as its attack was reduced quickly. With the buff of a few ramp cards, it is much easier and quicker for this unit to enter the frontline. In some cases, it ends up being a road blocker, which is not fun. As such, we are limiting its ability to combat damage only.

We are also constantly checking what cards are not being played and trying to come up with interesting changes. The community has requested some buffs for Soviet air units for a long time. Those medium USA bombers are not played at all. Therefore, we are changing the HAVOC. These changes are probably not enough to make great decks. But the community is always very creative. We believe some interesting decks will appear after those changes.

When a balance patch is released, we always check the feedback from the community. Some changes are welcome and some are not, especially nerfs. However, changes have to be made for fresh and different gaming experiences. We really hope you can understand that. Balance changes will go on, based on the statistics and your feedback. Our ultimate goal is making KARDS the most interesting and exciting card game with the theme of World War II.
Adjusted down in power

2ND CALIFORNIA
Old: When this unit is damaged, give it -2-1 instead.
New: Combat damage dealt to this unit is reduced to 1.

This bad boy had a lot of fun on the battlefield. Now it is time to give him a bit of a slap. The unit will still be very potent for exchange in combat, as its attack will not be reduced and it can be repaired. However, it will be very vulnerable to damages from orders. Now, it can also be destroyed by 83RD NAVAL BRIGADE and other cards that have the same ability.
SPITFIRE MK IIA
Old: Deployment: +1+2 if the enemy controls an air unit.
New: Deployment: +2+2 if your enemy controls an air unit. Gains Fury if not.

This Spitfire is a huge threat once deployed, being capable of dealing a lot of damage. The new version will still be powerful. Buff or Fury, which one is better? The enemy can also try to affect which one you will get. It requires more strategic thinking for both players.
UNDERGROUND STATE
Old: Send target enemy unit to owner's hand. Add a LEGIONS to your support line.
New: Target enemy unit Retreats. Add a LEGIONS to your support line.

As mentioned in previous dev blogs, we want to reduce the amount of cards that can send units back to hand directly from the frontline. The potential value from this card is huge. In case of targeting a unit in the supportline, the value of this new version remains the same, which means capturing the frontline is important!
Strategic Changes

A-20 HAVOC
Old: Deployment: Random enemy unit has +2 operation cost.
New: Deployment: Your bombers operate for 2 less this turn.

The statistics have proved that increasing the operation cost of a single enemy unit is not working very well. As such, we would like to try this new ability, in hope of seeing a middle range bomber deck.
P-61 BLACK WIDOW
Old: When BLACK WIDOW attacks, your air units operate for free this turn.
New: At the start of your turn, give a random friendly air unit immune for this turn.

This card is one of the least used Elite cards, almost as low as the old Skytrain. While the new HAVOC will reduce the operation cost, we need to change this card. BLACK WIDOW, such a cool name, deserves a very cool ability. It’s not a big threat on deployment, but it will be if it stays on the battlefield.
Adjusted up in power

222ND GUARD RIFLES
Old: Pincer: At the start of your turn, fully repair this unit.
New: Pincer: At the end of your turn, fully repair this unit.

High cost infantry units usually don’t see much play unless they have very strong deployment effects. With Guard, it can at least protect your HQ. If it is deployed late in the game, the Pincer-ed unit can exchange for free. It can also enter the battlefield earlier by Machines of War. In addition, it can be a very good combo card with URAL FACTORIES, on the condition that your HQ doesn’t need to be Guarded.
LA-5
As promised, we will make Soviet air units better. With the defense increased by 1, LA-5 is still a bit worse than its counterparts from other nations. However, Soviet does have BLOOD RED SKY and the recently changed VETERAN PILOTS. We really look forward to seeing a decent Soviet air deck created by the community.
YAK 9
Old: Destruction: Draw a Soviet card from your deck.
New: Destruction: Draw a random Soviet card.

Hopefully, this +1 attack change can improve the Soviet air deck and make it a bit better bit.The ability stays the same. We have decided to keep the texts as concise as possible. Drawing cards, by default, means drawing from your own deck. It is unlikely that you can draw cards from the enemy’s deck in any card game.
MACCHI C.202
Old: At the end of your turn, if your HQ has less defense than the enemy HQ, destroy this unit.
New: Takes 2 damage at the end of your turn, if your HQ has less defense than the enemy

This fighter has the best body as a 2-cost fighter. However, it can be stuck in hand for the whole game due to its drawback. With this new version, it will always have a chance of affecting the battlefield.
FIAT C.R.42
Old: Can only be deployed if you control more units than the enemy.
New: Deployment: Gets +1 attack if you control more units than the enemy.

This fighter is in a very similar situation to MACCHI C.202. It can be very good if you control more units than the enemy. However, it can also be a dead card in hand in most cases. The new version is based on the same direction. It gains a buff and becomes a better fighter, if you control more units. Otherwise, you can still use it.

That is all, these changes will be live soon. Please continue giving us your feedback, which is very valuable to us. We are checking your feedback, as always.

Thanks and see you on the battlefield, commanders!
