The best sword games on PC

Hacking and slashing your way through hordes of enemies with an oversized sword in hand is one of videogaming's greatest delights. Sword games can strive for realism, both in their combat and setting, or set out to be ludicrous power fantasies - there are no hard and fast rules here, which makes it all rather exciting.

So given that it's an extremely broad genre, you might well be having a tough time finding the best of the bunch. That's precisely why we've collated a handy list that spans all types of sword games, from 2D co-op titles and hack 'n' slash actioners to VR rhythm games and expansive sandbox RPGs.

Regardless of whatever type of sword games you enjoy, you're sure to find something here that takes your fancy. We've also tried to get a nice mix of single-player and multiplayer games, just in case you have a strong preference for either. And so let's get to it! Here are the best sword games on PC in no particular order.

Vermintide 2's dwarf hero is getting a new career DLC

Vermintide 2's dwarf hero is getting a new career DLC

Vermintide II has several possibilities for each of its five heroes when it comes to careers, which determine their abilities and potential weapon loadouts. Initially, each had three options, but that's expanding to four. The next hero to be getting a new career will be Bardin Goreksson, the dwarven member of the Ubershreik Five.

So far, the only hero to have gotten a new career this season has been Empire officer Markus Kruber, who added the Grail Knight career path as add-on DLC in June. That swaps out his familiar Imperial armour for that of the more Arthurian-themed Bretonnia, and focuses his abilities in on melee combat. The DLC also adds new weapons, a new skill tree, and a new character skin.

We can expect much the same for whatever Goreksson's new career ends up being, which at this point is still an open question. There are a couple strong possibilities, given Warhammer's existing roles for dwarf warriors. At the moment, Goreksson can pick from Ranger Veteran, Ironbreaker, and Slayer.

Warhammer: Vermintide's anniversary brings five days of rat-smashing fun

Did you know the Warhammer: Vermintide series is about to turn a whole five years old? Well, if you didn't, you do now. Starting this very day, developer Fatshark is celebrating the rat games series' fifth birthday with "all things five". That is, "five days filled with activities" themed around - yup, you guessed it - the number five.

As detailed on the Vermintide site, the first of these celebrations comes in the form of some sharp shark-themed headgear. The "Obese Megalodon hat", as it's called (get it?), will be available to Vermintide 2 players across all platforms - all you've got to do is complete one single mission, and you'll scoop it up.

Next up is a challenge that hinges on the premise of "slay rats, be rewarded" (well, it is a "rat-bashing franchise" after all). "We're tasking you and your fellow heroes to cut down five hundred and fifty-five million, five hundred and fifty-five thousand, five hundred and fifty-five enemies in Warhammer: Vermintide 2", Fatshark says. Phew! It doesn't matter which platform you're on, or whether you win or lose your match - it'll all count towards the total.
